A Remarkable Journey into Music

Mahesh’s entry into the music world reads almost like a film script. An MBA graduate from XLRI, Jamshedpur, he initially pursued a corporate career, working with companies such as Hindustan Polymers and India Pistons.

In the late 1980s, Mahesh Mahadevan was diagnosed with cancer, which became a turning point in his life. During his treatment, his childhood friend P. Jayendra visited him and encouraged him to return to music—an area where Mahesh had shown exceptional promise during his school days.

Mahesh, who was going through a depression stage, found a new path to find his real happiness. This encouragement reignited his passion and redirected his life toward music. He was equally encouraged by his wife and friends, and Mahesh Mahadevan started writing ad jingles. Allwyn refrigerators was his first ad. But it was the jingle for Regaul brand, with the one-liner – Sottu Neelam Doi that made him hugely popular.

An artist who revived life with music

He had learnt classic guitar during his childhood, and Dhanraj was his guru at the age of 11. He used to compose music during his school days. Later he was a part of the college band called The Versatiles. But after studies, he took a corporate job for financial stability. Diagnosing with a serious disease made him think about reigniting his real passion – music.

Success in Advertising Music

Mahesh soon entered the ad film industry, where he truly flourished. He composed over 250 popular advertising jingles, becoming one of the most sought-after composers in the field in the 1990s.

Some of his most memorable ad campaigns include:

Regaul Blue (Sottu Neelam, Doi)

TVS Tyres

Apollo Tyres

His ability to blend creativity with commercial appeal made him a standout composer in advertising music.

Role at Real Image Media Technologies

P. Jayendra, one of the founding members of Real Image Media Technologies, played a crucial role in Mahesh’s transition into ad films. As the company expanded, Mahesh took on additional responsibilities and served as Director – Finance and Administration, balancing both creative and corporate roles with ease.

From Ad Jingles to Film Music

The transition from advertising music to films was natural for Mahesh Mahadevan. His debut film Nammavar, starring Kamal Haasan, marked his entry into mainstream cinema. It was his first association with director-actor too. He had turned down many projects, including Maniratnam’s Roja. Though he composed music for only a limited number of films, his work was known for its depth, restraint, and strong emotional undercurrent. His debut work, Nammavar, earned him special mention at National awards.

An Early Loss to Indian Music

In a short professional career around a decade, while he was active in ad and film industry singly fighting with cancer for long 14 years, he motivated other cancer patients and also did cancer counselling. Mahesh Mahadevan passed away in 2002 at a comparatively young age of 47. Same year Mahesh Memorial Trust (MMT) was formed by his friends. Kanavu Meippada Vendum (2004) was released posthumously.

Despite his short lifespan and limited film output, he left behind a lasting legacy as a composer. Through his work, Mahesh Mahadevan successfully bridged the worlds of advertising, background scoring, and meaningful cinema.
