Hoo Lalala Song

Oooo..lalala

Oohuuu..lalala

Oo….hu lala lala lala lalala laa

Oooo..lalala

Oohuuu..lalala

Oo….hu lala lala lala lalala laa (F)

Maana Madurai

Pachcha kizhi onnu

Kettadhu kettadhu kelvi enna

En kannu rombha azhagaa

En rekka rombha azhagaa

Indha kelvi enai kettaal

Enna naan paaduven (M)

Bird on a tree branch in Madhurai,

What’s the question asked by that green bird?

Are my eyes very beautiful?

Are my wings very beautiful?

If I am asked this question,

Which song would I sing?

Oooo..lalala

Oohuuu..lalala

Oo….hu lala lala lala lalala laa

Oooo..lalala

Oohuuu..lalala

Oo….hu lala lala lala lalala laa (M/F)

Mettu saalayilae maattu vandiyilae

Hey poraalae ponnu oruthi

Ponnu kattiyadhu yenna pudavai endren

Vaanavillin vannam endraal

In the western path, in a cattle vehicle,

Hey, going…one girl

When asked what cloth she is wearing,

Replied, it’s the color of the rainbow

Mazhaithuli mannil vandhu

Sindha sindha

Yezughiradhae oru vaasam

Adhu enai vaana villil kondu serthu

Vidugiradhae sila neram (M)

Raindrops scattering in the soil,

Giving a perfume

It takes me to the rainbow, sometimes

Oooo..lalala

Oohuuu..lalala

Oo….hu lala lala lala lalala laa (M/F)

Song Trivia

Minsara Kanavu (Sapne) swept almost all the musical awards at the 1997 National Film Awards, except Best Lyricist. In fact, Vairamuthu penned more than 80% of hit Rahman songs in Tamil. Rahman received the best music, Chithra for the best female playback for this song, and S. P. Bala Subrahmaniyam for the best male playback for the sizzling “Thanga Thamarai” song. Prabhadeva, who played the male lead too, received the National award for best choreography for two of its songs – Strawberry & Vennila (Chanda Re).

When it comes to playback singing, Chithra’s style in this song is entirely different. She sings in a carefree mode, as requested by the composer, with noticeable variations in her voice modulation across different portions of the song. In fact, she almost sings the song in high pitch, even singing 3-4 lines in a breath, without breaking voice – not an easy task.

Film director Gautam Vasudeva Menon, during his early days in films, while working as an assistant, appears in this song in the crowd, in 2 shots, it seems.

Now Gautam is one of the leading directors of Tamil cinema, and he is also a seasonal actor who does character roles. He directed 2 Hindi films. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein was only his second film, but his debut flick in Hindi, which earned a cult status after release. Ekk Deewana Tha – the 2nd one, both are remakes of his own movies. Ekk Deewana Tha was shot with a positive climax, unlike the original Tamil version – Vinne Thandi Varuvaaya. In fact, the film title was coined from the ‘Vennilave’ song of Minsara Kanavu, the movie in which he appears in the ‘Hoo La La’ song among the crowd.
