Bahul Ramesh is a highly acclaimed screenwriter & DOP of Malayalam cinema. Best known for his association with acclaimed director, Dinjith Ayyathan, they collaborated for all the three films of the director – Kakshi: Amminippilla (as cinematographer only), Kishkindha Kaandam and Eko (Screenwriter & DOP). Apart from writing powerful screenplays and doing cinematography for Kishkindha Kaandam and Eko, he also scripted the second season of the web series, Kerala Crime Files. These three scripts together completed Bahul Ramesh’s Animal Trilogy.

Bahul Ramesh studied cinematography at LV Prasad College of Media Studies Chennai
Bahul’s hometown is Payyannur of Kannur district. He started his film journey as a cinematographer. Scripting came into his mind only during the lockdown days of pandemic. He studied cinematography at LV Prasad College of Media Studies, Chennai.
In 2016 he did the camera work of the short film, Grace Villa. His debut film work was Mandharam in 2018, directed by Vijesh Vijay. After Mandharam, he continued with DOP works and some of his projects include – Kakshi: Amminippilla, with debutante director Dinjith Ayyathan, Mohan Kumar Fans, Innale Vare etc.
Kishkindha Kaandam entirely lifted the career graphs of few artists in the industry
Kishkindha Kaandam was a project which less-experienced technical team and crew. But the movie became a sleeper hit during the Onam season of 2024. Bahul Ramesh was highly praised for the screenplay and cinematography. A single artist handling two entirely different departments in cinema was indeed unique.
When the movie met with both critical acclaim and box office success, expectations became high. The team met expectations of both public and critics with their next project, Eko in 2025. The team remained more or less same, except the actors.
Director of Kerala Crime Files was familiar to him during his Media Studies in Chennai
Ahammed, the director of Kerala Crime Files was a known face to him during his days in Chennai. They became friends when Ahammed did an internship at LV Prasad College of Media Studies. After the success of first season, the director approached Bahul Ramesh to write the second part. Kishkindha Kaandam was not released yet. Initially, it was not an easy task for Bahul to develop a story with few characters. Later he took the project, and included ‘dogs’ as an important character. The second season released in 2025 received appreciation from critics and audience.
Same year, his work of Eko came out, which established his name among the leading screenwriters of present times. He was immensely praised for clever and layered writer, and splendidly capturing the beauty of woods and mountains. His works for last two films have been compared with legendary writers of 1980s and when editor-director Mahesh Narayanan dropped the name of Christopher Nolan after watching Kishkindha Kaandam, he was blown away.

Kishkindha Kaandam – The work which established his career in Mollywood
1. It’s quite rare to see a cinematographer scripting films as well. But Bahul did it twice – Kishkindha Kaandam and Eko.
2. He, along with music composer Mujeeb Majeed marked their film debut with Mandharam in 2018. It was a beginning of a great bond, and later they collaborated with director Dinjith Ayyathan for their masterpiece works – Kishkindha Kaandam and Eko.
3. He wrote Kishkindha Kaandam during the lockdown of Covid pandemic in 2020. It was just the mad flow of words rushing out of him, without a skeleton or structured chapters. He scripted it in just 8 days.
4. Kishkindha Kaandam was his second written script, but Dinjith Ayyathan decided to make it first. Eko was his first written script, which they worked and released in 2025.
5. In his first five films, including Kakshi Ammini Pillai, Kishkindha Kaandam and Innale Vare, Asif Ali was either the hero or played a cameo.
6. In the script of Kerala Crime Files, Bahul Ramesh included a dog with a cognitive disability. That idea was inspired from a visually impaired dog which he saw at a friend’s home, very disturbing.
