Fareed Parbati – Best known for Ruba’I poetry and ghazals

Fareed Parbati (1961-2011) was an Urdu poet from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He authored poetry as ghazals and Ruba’I (four line poetry style derived from Persian, and a tough genre of Persian and Urdu poetry with strict rules). He has been publishing poems since early 1990s and some of his major published works include – Guftgoo Chaand Se, Farid Nama, Hajoom-I-Aaina, Khbari Tahayur, Isbaat, Hazaar Imkaan and Aabi-Neesaan. He published 8 poetry collections and 4 works on literary criticism.

His real name is Ghulam Nabi Bhat. He taught Urdu at different colleges for years and also took PhD in Urdu from Kashmir University in 1995. He served as Assistant Professor at the Department of Urdu, University of Kashmir from 2001 to 2006 and later as Associate Professor at Iqbal Institute of Culture and Philosophy till his death. He died at the age of 50 after fighting a battle against cancer.

Fareed Parbati – Some interesting facts

1. He was an academician and poet par excellence, and one of the best contemporary Urdu poets. He had good rapport with his students and inspired them as well.

2. He always loved to work with young people and welcomed them with smile every time.

3. He served in Kashmir Accounts Services from 1987 to 2001 before he turned a professor.

4. He loved Rubai because it is the short and complete form.

5. He delivered lectures at some of the prominent universities across the country.
