Sanjib Datta – Bollywood film editor with films Mardani, Iqbal, Dor and Ek Hasina Thi to his credit

Sanjib Datta was a successful film editor associated with Bollywood and Bengali cinema. Mardani, Iqbal, Dor, Tum Bin and Ek Hasina Thi are among the major works in Hindi cinema. His work consisted of more than 80 films belonging to Hindi and Bengali languages. He worked with well-known directors like Nagesh Kukunoor, Pradeep Sarkar Sriram, Raghavan and Kundan Shah. He passed away in 2019 following medical complications arising out of bypass surgery. He was only 54 years old when he passed away.

Sanjib Datta was one of the brilliant students from Renu Saluja school, before he joined cine field. He was also an alumnus of FTII. He joined Bollywood in the early 2000s, and Tum Bin was one of the early works. Ek Hasina Thi was his first major work which earned him critical acclaim. He shifted his base from Mumbai to his hometown Kolkata in 2011, because he didn’t like Mumbai as a city.

Kaalpurush” and “Jara Brishtite Bhijechilo” are among his early works in Bengali cinema. He edited 4 movies of Rajorshi Dey in Bengali language — Purba Pashchim Dakshin (Uttor Asbei), Shubho Noboborsho, Birpurush and Riffle. He was fully busy in Bengali cinema, and a few movies were lined to release when he passed away in October 2019 in his middle ages. He had a bypass surgery earlier. Following a heart surgery he didn’t survive.

Sanjib Datta – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. He frequently associated with acclaimed director Nagesh Kukunoor for most of his movies. Aashayein & Tasveer 8×10 are among their associations.

2. He received training in editing under the guidance of National award winning editor Renu Saluja.

3. He finished the work of ‘Bollywood Calling’ when Renu Saluja passed away. But he didn’t take the credit.

4. He served as a jury member at 63th National awards in 2017. He also served as the chairperson of north zone.

5. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was his senior at FTII.

6. He was a reserved but witty person, says his colleague Sudiptaa Chakroborty.

7. His wife works in a Bengali private channel, and he has one daughter.

8. Editor Dhrubo Banerjee started his career as an assistant to Sanjib in 1998.
