Murali Gopy is a noted actor and screenwriter of Malayalam cinema. He is also an author, lyricist, playback singer, music composer and journalist. He is the son of legendary Malayalam actor, Bharat Gopi. Murali Gopy has shown his versatility in acting, along with writing a few powerful political thrillers. As a screenwriter, he is best known for scripting Lucifer and L2: Empuraan of Lucifer series starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj. He mostly plays negative shaded & supporting roles, which include – Ee Adutha Kaalathu, Left Right Left and Thappana.

Born as the son of legendary film actor Bharath Gopi
Murali Gopy was born to film actor Bharath Gopi and Jayalakshmy on 4 March 1972 in Thiruvananthapuram. He began his career as an actor, and first appeared in Rasikan in 2004. He also marked his debut as a screenwriter and playback singer through the same film, singing ‘Chaanju nikkana’. Gopy was next seen in 2009 Blessy film, Bhramaram, playing the supporting role of Dr. Alex Varghese, which won him the 2009 Sathyan Memorial Film Award.
Murali Gopy was not regular in films during his initial phase
After his debut flick, he went for a 5-year hiatus. Even after he returned and received appreciation for his role in Bhramaram, he was a seasonal actor only. Then Murali was seen in Thappana, playing negative role. The role helped him to bag Asianet Film Award for The Best Villain. In 2011, he appeared in Kamal’s Gadhama.
Ee Adutha Kaalathu – marked his new beginning as a screenwriter
He scripted Ee Adutha Kaalathu (2012), directed by Arun Kumar Aravind, which won him numerous awards in acting and screenplay categories. This script is regarded as a trendsetter of Malayalam cinema. He played a supporting role in Left Right Left (2013), which became a major turning point of his career. This movie also bagged him numerous honours in Supporting Role category. After that he was regular as an actor, playing supporting and negative roles.
Murali Gopy played a significant double role as twin brothers, Dr. Hari Narayanan and Ravi Narayanan, in the 2014 Malayalam psychological thriller film 1 by Two, alongside Fahadh Faasil. He played full-length roles and made brief appearances in Malayalam movies – Kanyaka Talkies, Kaanchi, Vedivazhipadu, 1 by Two, Naku Penda Naku Taka, Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal, Lukka Chuppi, Pa Va, Pavada, Tiyaan, Aami, Drishyam 2, One, Kuruthi, Kanakarajyam, Kammara Sambhavam, Thakkol etc.
Best known for penning political thrillers
Rasikan starring Dileep was his first film as a screenwriter. Then he scripted path-breaking Ee Adutha Kaalathu. Left Right Left, Tiyaan, Kammara Sambhavam, Lucifer, Theerppu, and L2: Empuraan. His upcoming projects include – Ananthan Kaadu and Tyson. He regularly wrote scripts for Mohanlal, Prithviraj and Dileep and is the co-producer of Prithviraj starrer Theerppu in 2022. He also composed 2 of its songs, his maiden work as a composer.
As a playback singer, Murali Gopy worked with Vidyasagar in his debut film, and regularly with Gopi Sunder. He has turned lyricist for a few films scripted by him such as Theerppu, Tiyaan, Lucifer and L2: Empuraan. He started writing short stories at the age of 19. As an author, Murali Gopiyude Kadhaka is his published collection of stories. Psychotic Daivam, Psychedelic Swargam, Psychiatric Manushyan – is his other work.
Murali Gopy – Some interesting and less-known facts
1. He is not a formally trained singer. But he loved music right from childhood. He sees mother’s lullabies as his inspiration. Till now, he has rendered his voice for more than 15 film songs.
2. He wrote his first story at the age of 19. It was to see a smile on the face of his ailing father. His father was impressed by his writing and asked to publish it.
3. As a screenwriter Murali Gopy feels, revisiting his old works and revising them won’t give new fruitful results. There is no need either.
