Kaatre En Vaasal Vanthai Song from Rhythm (Tamil) – Lyrics in English with Translation

Kaatre En Vaasal Lyrics meaning

Kaatre En Vaasal Vandhai

Methuvaaga Kadhavu Thiranthaai

O breeze, you came at my house entrance

And slowly opened the door

Kaatre Un Perai Ketten

Kadhal Endraai

O breeze, I asked your name

And you replied, I’m love

Netru Nee Engu Irundhaai

Kaatre Nee Solvaai Endren

Swasaththil Irunthathaaga

Solli Sendraai (M)

“Where were you yesterday?

Tell me”, I asked the breeze

And it replied, “I was in your breath”, and left

Thulli Varum Kaatre

Thulli Varum Kaatre

Thaai Mozhi Pesu

O prancing breeze, O prancing breeze,

Please talk in your mother tongue

Nilavulla Varaiyil

Nilamulla Varaiyil

Nenjinil Veesu

As long as the moon and earth live,

Keep flowing into hearts

Thulli Varum Kaatre

Thulli Varum Kaatre

Thaai Mozhi Pesu

O prancing breeze, O prancing breeze,

Please talk in your mother tongue

Kaatre En Vaasal Vandhai

And you replied, I’m love

Kaarkaalam Alaikkum Pothu

Olinthu Kolla Nee Vendum

Thaavani Kudai Pidipaaya (M)

When it rains in the monsoon season,

I need a place to hide,

Will you hold your half sari as umbrella?

Anbe Naan Uranga Vendum

Azhagaana Idam Vendum

Kangalil Idam Koduppaaya (F)

Dear, for me to sleep

I need a beautiful place

Will you give me shelter in your eyes?

Nee Ennaarugil Vanthu Neliya

Naan Un Manathil Sendru Oliya

Nee Un Manathil En Uruvam

Kandupidippaayaa (M)

As you wriggle next to me,

I hide inside your heart.

Would you find my reflection in your heart?

Pookalukkulle Thean Ulla Varaiyil

Kadhalar Vaazhga

As long as there is honey inside flowers,

Let lovers live

Pookalukkulle Thean Ulla Varaiyil

Kadhalar Vaazhga (F)

As long as there is honey inside flowers,

Let lovers live

Boomikku Mele Vaan Ulla Varaiyil

Let love also live

Like the pearl,

Hidden inside an oyster over a long time,

My femininity has attained its culmination

Thirakkaatha Sippi Ennai

Thiranthu Kolla Solgirathaa

En Nenjam Marandhu Nirkirathey (M)

The unopened oyster

Asks me to open it

My heart stands stuck (hearing this)

I assumed I was a little child

With your arrival, I came to age

Ennai Marupadiyum

Siru Pillaiyaai Seivaaiyaa (F)

Will you turn me back into a kid once again?

Kattilidum Vayathil Thottilida Sonnaal

Sariya Sariya

In the age where I should spread the coat,

If you ask me to put cradle, is it right?

Kattilidum Vayathil Thottilida Sonnaal

In the age where I should spread the cot,

If you ask me to put cradle, is it right?

Kattilil Iruvarum Kuzhainthaigal Aanaal

Pizhaiyaa Pizhaiyaa (F)

If we both turn into kids in the cot,

Is it a fault?

Interesting facts about the album & song

Lyrical metaphors of Pancha Bhoota in 5 songs

The soundtrack album of Rhythm has a special, conceptual feature: five songs representing the Pancha Bhoota (the five elements of nature in Indian philosophy: Earth, Water, Air/Wind, Fire, and Sky/Ether/Space). The album included a total of 5 songs, which represented 5 elements, and the themes were well-placed as metaphors in the lines by the lyricist Vairamuthu. The idea was fresh and well-accepted too.

Kaatre En Vaasal represented ‘Wind’, Nadhiye Nadhiye represented ‘Water’, Thaniye Thannanthaniye Song represented ‘Earth’, Haiyo Pathikichu represented ‘Fire’ and ‘Anbae Idhu‘ represented Sky. This makes Rhythm one of Rahman’s most conceptually layered albums, adding extra meaning to the songs. These 5 elements were metaphorically included words in Tamil lyrics as Kaatre (Wind/Air), Nadhiye (River/Water), Nilamae (Earth), Haiyo Pathikichu  (“Oh no, it’s on fire!” or “It caught fire” – metaphorically ‘fire of love’) and Vaanam (Sky), respectively.

Interestingly, Rahman included the voices into the orchestra of each song, which perfectly blended with the respective themes. While filming these songs, these 5 elements were included too. Knocking wind & voice of wind, flowing river, grounding earth, burning fire and vast sky were included in the respective song sequences too. Desert wind, river shots, earthy dance, fiery passion and wide shots of the skies & clouds made the songs more understandable to audience. In short, alongside using Pancha Bhoota as metaphors, they were beautifully visualized too. Cinematography by P.C. Sreeram gave a visual treat to the audience, in true sense.

Hindi Version of Kaatre En Vaasal

Rahman reused three songs from Rhythm for the Bollywood film, Lakeer – Forbidden Lines in 2004. Kaatre En Vaasal’s Hindi version, Paigham Laaya Sawan filmed on John Abraham and Nauheed Cyrusi became most popular among the three. But the movie flopped at the box office. It was not a remake. Kavitha Krishnamurthy sang this Hindi version too, and Shaan was the male voice.

The rest two songs are “Ayyo Pathikichu” reused as “Offho Jalta Hai” and “Thaniye Thananthaniye” reused as Nachley. Lyrics of all the three songs were penned by Mehboob, who regularly translated Rahman’s early Tamil works to Hindi. Read English lyrics and Thaniye Tamil song here. The songs of the album didn’t follow the style of using metaphors of Panchaboota.

A brief note on the beautiful visualization

The extremely melodious Kaatre En Vaasal was beautifully shot at the desert landscapes of Jaisalmer’s Bhada Bagh in Rajasthan. Watch the video here and enjoy! The beginning word of the song, ‘Kaatre‘ well-complimented with the wind of the vast spread & lonely deserts, as well as the sound of the sands. Jyothika who played Arjun’s first wife in the film, appears in this song sequence only. But this brief appearance was so powerful that people mostly relate this song & the actress with the movie Rhythm always.

Jyothika had only made baby-steps in Tamil cinema in the late 1990s, with her brief appearances as romantic interest in song sequences like Sona of Valee (1999) and Kaatre En Vaasal of Rhythm (2000), and with the release of Khushi (2000), she became the next-biggest-star material of Kollywood. By the time Rhythm was released, Jyothika was already a big star with the huge success of Khushi, aside Vijay. Her movies – Poovellam Kettuppar (1999) aside Suriya and Mugavaree (2000) aside Ajith were already released, before she turned a star.
