Song Trivia – 4 Interesting Facts
Trivia 1: The movie, directed by Bharathan, was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 65th Academy Awards. This highly acclaimed film received 5 National awards, including best female playback singer for this song.
Trivia 2: This single tune has given National Film Award to 2 female singers – Janaki for Tamil version (Thevar Magan ’92) & Chithra for Hindi version (Virasat -’97) in the best female playback singer category, indeed a unique feat. Read more. Anu Malik copied the tune for the official remake without crediting the original composer.
Trivia 3: The music album composed by Ilaiyaraaja was a strong contender for the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1993. Interestingly, the legend lost to his own disciple A. R. Rahman, who was nominated for his debut work, Roja. When the award was tied with eight votes for Ilaiyaraaja and Rahman each, the chairman of the jury Balu Mahendra voted in favour of the newcomer A. R. Rahman. Rahman truly deserved it!
Trivia 4: Illayaraja was inspired by hit Bollywood song, “Yeh Dil Deewana Hai” of Ishq Par Zor Nahin, while composing the song “Inji Idupazhagi”. Kamal Hassan wanted a tune somewhat similar to it. Illayaraja refused to copy the original tune, and when he created a tune inspired by it, it became totally different. Masterpiece!!
