Song Facts
Manju Warrier won the National Award (Special Mention) for this movie, which was released after she took a sabbatical from films at the age of 20, following a glorious innings. Thilakan, mostly seen in serious father roles, exhibited his talent in a sringar avatar. Manju’s expressions, too, are amazing.
The first two lines belong to an erotic poem written by Irayimman Thampi for the lover of the King of Travancore, Swathi Thirunal. The remaining lines were penned by Kavalam Narayana Panicker, carrying the same tone throughout.
Irayimman Thampi’s lullaby “Omana Thinkal Kidavo”, which he wrote for baby Swathi Thirunal in the early 19th century, is widely regarded as the most popular lullaby in Malayalam. Its English-translated version featured in Life of Pi and was shortlisted for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards, bringing back a lot of controversy at the time.
Swathi Thirunal, a great patron of arts and music, fell in love with a court dancer, who inspired most of his works. He composed more than 400 Carnatic and Hindustani pieces. Theirs was an unsuccessful love story, and he died at the age of 32. As the story goes, the two had a quarrel and did not speak for a long time. The poet penned the song at the request of the dancer Sugandhavalli to break the ice. She performed it before the king, and the song brought them back together.
