George Maryan is a popular comedian and character associated with Tamil cinema. Though he began with comic roles, later he has exhibited his talent in serious character roles too. He started his career in theatre, before joining Kollywood. He joined films in 2002, and his breakthrough role happened through Priyadarshan’s National award-winning venture, Kanchivaram released in 2008. His roles as an English teacher in Madrasapattinam, a mentally challenged person in Deiva Thirumagal, a house servant with impeccable comic timing in Saivam and a loving & affectionate father in Dragon show his acting range.

George Maryan began his career as an actor in theatre in 1989
Maryan was born on 23 March 1963 in Chennai. His full name is M. A. George Mariyaan. He joined theatre in 1989 in Chennai-based theatre group Koothu-P-Pattarai, under the mentorship of N. Muthuswamy. After working for more than a decade he got his first break films in 2002. By that time, he has already performed in more than 120 plays. Yet during his initial days he struggled with getting meaty roles. He was casted as a bumbling police officer in Priyadarshan’s Kanchivaram, which became a turning point of his career and people started noticing him. After that he concentrated to films.
His role as a servant in National award winning Saivam was memorable
He did some meaty and memorable roles afterwards, of which Poi Solla Porom (2008), Madrasapattinam (2010), Deiva Thirumagal (2011) and Saivam (2014) are memorable. He was widely praised for his role as a servant in Saivam, and was his best role till then. With director Sundar. C, George worked in Kalakalappu franchise and also worked with him in the movie, Aambala. He frequently worked in the films of A. L. Vijay and Sundar C. His role in Kaithi (2019) as a constable, in Leo (2023) as Napoleon and in Dragon (2025) as Pradeep Ranganathan’s father were widely praised. Mandela (2021), Run Baby Run (2023), Garudan (2024) etc are a few more. He appeared in Tamil web series, The Village (2023). He is connected to his fans through his social media handles.
