Chakkapazham Kaalan

Ingredients for Chakkapazham Kaalan (Jackfruit Kalan):

  1. Ripen (not well-ripened) jackfruit made into square pieces – 2 cups
    Salt – For taste
    Turmeric powder – ¼ small spoon
    Green chillies split into two – 5
    Curry leaves – 1 stalk
  2. Coconut scraped – ½
    Cumin seeds – ¼ spoon
    Pepper seeds – ¼ spoon (soaked in water and skin removed)
    Thick curd with sour – 1.5 cups
  3. Coconut oil – 1 big spoon
    Mustard seeds – 1 small spoon
    Fenugreek seeds – A pinch
    Red chilli broken into two – 1 or 2
    Curry leaves – 1 stalk
  4. Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp

How to prepare Chakkapazham Kaalan (Jackfruit Kalan)?

  1. Mix all ingredients listed under 1 and cook by adding a little water.
  2. Grind together all ingredients listed as 2 and add to the cooked jackfruit.
  3.  Turn the flame off when the gravy starts boiling.
  4. Now heat one big spoon of coconut oil in a pan and temper ingredients no: 3.
  5. Add a little turmeric powder to it, and season the curry using this coconut oil.
