Rohit Dhawan – Bollywood director of ‘Desi Boyz’ fame
Rohit Dhawan is a budding director and screenwriter from Bollywood, who marked his debut with Desi Boyz starring Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh in 2011. His second movie, Dishoom (2016) starring John Abraham and Varun Dhawan was also commercially successful. He is the son of ace comedy filmmaker David Dhawan and younger brother of popular actor Varun Dhawan. His paternal uncle Anil Dhawan was a lead hero of 1970s and currently playing supporting roles.
Rohit Dhawan belongs to a family with strong filmy background. His father is a famous director of several comedy blockbusters, while his uncle is a well-known actor. Following his father’s footsteps Rohit too joined film direction. He joined film industry as an associate director under his father for the movie, Partner. He also assisted in script writing. Later he worked as an assistant working under Farhan Akhtar for the film Don 2 in second unit. In 2011 he marked his impressive debut as a director through Desi Boyz. The director experimented the hit Jodi of comedy entertainer Garam Masala, and it proved successful. He got married to Jaanvi Desai the following year and a daughter was born in 2018. They had 7 years of courtship before getting married.
Rohit Dhawan – Some interesting and less-known facts
1. His younger days were spent in Bandra, Juhu and Andheri, and for higher studies he moved to New York.
2. He acted in a few short films while at school, but was never inclined towards acting.
3. Rohit is the second cousin of director Punit Malhotra. David Dhawan and Punit’s father are first cousins.
4. He is the nephew of actress Rashmi Dhawan (Anil Dhawan’s wife) who had a brief career in Bollywood. His cousin Sidharth Dhawan had a brief career in Bollywood and television.
5. His mother is designer Manish Malhotra’s cousin sister. Thus Rohit is his nephew.
6. Rohit studied film direction from NYU Film School.
7. Akshay Kumar made a cameo appearance in John Abraham starrrer Dishoom. Earlier the duo worked together in Dezi Boys.
8. Both his films had two actors in the lead role, and John Abraham appeared in both.
9. Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor are his close friends from film industry. Ranbir is his friend from school days.
10. When he was a child in the 1990s, in summer vacations he used to hang out in the shooting locations and film sets of Switzerland where David Dhawan used to shoot songs.
11. He believes that if you marry the right person, everything remains the same (quite contradictory to the thought that after marriage everything changes).
