Top 10 Shammi Kapoor songs penned by Hasrat Jaipuri
Iqbal Ahmed is his real name. But we know him only as Hasrat Jaipuri. His name itself is a bit of poetry! Hasrat Jaipuri remained one of the most celebrated Bollywood lyricists in the 1960s and he was best known for his association with Shankar Jaikishan. Obviously he penned lyrics for numerous chartbusters of Shammi Kapoor during his peak years, when SJ predominantly worked with Hasrat and Shailendra. So I present you a unique list of 10 of the best and chartbuster songs penned down by Hasrat Jaipuri for Shammi Kapoor.
When I made this list, I noticed that R. D. Burman’s tunes were associated with Majrooh Sultanpuri in the 1960s and O. P. Nayyar’s with S. H. Bihari, possible combination of Shammi Kapoor songs and Hasrat Jaipuri happened only with Shankar Jaikishen. So all these chosen 10 songs were composed by SJ and sung by Rafi. So here are the best 10 Shankar Jaikishen songs for Shammi Kapoor penned by Hasrat Jaipuri, obviously ghost voice of Rafi. I think after the release of Junglee in 1961, no other voice has been used by any composer to record songs of Shammi Kapoor, where he played male protagonist. And here is my list. In this list I chose 10 songs from different Shammi Kapoor movies. All the chosen songs for this list have SJ, Shammi, Rafi and Hasrat Jaipuri as common factors, and interestingly no duets are featured here.
1. Dil Ke Jharoke Mein from Brahmachari (1968)
Let me begin the list with my most favourite song of this combination. What a lovely lyrics, and how expressive Rafi expressed Shammi Kapoor’s feelings through his rendition! No doubt, Dil Ke Jharoke Mein definitely lists among the top 10 heart breaking songs ever produced in Bollywood. For the year 1969, Rafi earned all the three nominations at Filmfare award, with two nominations from Brahmachari and finally winning it for Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein. Lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri also earned a Filmfare nomination. Shammi Kapoor is seen playing a piano in the song sequence, and among the audience are his sweet heart Rajshree and her fiancé Pran.
2. Badan Pe Sitare from Prince (1969)
This sensuous song in Rafi’s voice is a party number filmed on Vyjayanthimala and Shammi. We can see Shammiji trying to woo his heroine in this song, and he finally succeeds. Pran who plays villain can also be spotted in the song. He got inspiration to write this song after seeing a woman dressed in a sari studded with glittering stars in Paris.
3. Akele Akele from An Evening In Paris (1967)
Shammi Kapoor follows Sharmila Tagore and teases her in this naughty song. The song’s lyrics also played a significant role in making the song such a huge hit. Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra equally divided the songs of An Evening In Paris. They followed the same principle in most of SJ assignments also. Raat Ke Humsafar was equally popular song penned by the celebrated poet.
4. Dheere Chal from Boyfriend (1961)
It was one among the first songs sung by Rafi for Shammi Kapoor and it was a huge chartbuster. For the fast beats of SJ (inspired from an English tune), Hasrat Jaipuri wrote apt lyrics, and Shammi Kapoor through his expressions on screen made it so special. Madhubala on whom Shammi Kapoor had a crush in real life played the female lead, and in this song she pretends like sleeping and listens to Shammi Kapoor singing.
5. Nazar Bachakar from Dil Tera Deewana (1961)
This Rafi solo featured Mala Sinha aside Shammi Kapoor, and was one of the most popular songs of the album. This particular song was filmed in a beautiful historic monuments at Hampi. The song’s colour version is now available on net. The movie also included a less-known but beautiful duet of Rafi and Lata penned by our poet – Masoom Chehara Yeh Kaatil Adaaye.
6. Ehsaan Tera Hoga from Junglee (1961)
This song is the best instance that good lyrics and poetry can lift a tune to a new level. ‘Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par……’ – one of the best expressions of love ever on Bollywood screen, and full credits got to its lyricist, composer and singers. The song had two solo versions of Rafi and Lata. Onscreen performances are by Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu for both these versions.
7. Aye Gulbadan from Professor (1962)
Yet another instance that good lyrics give breathing oxygen to a good song. With strong influences of Urdu, Hasrat Jaipuri penned down an intense love song for Shammi Kapoor, and he appears alongside debutant Kalpana for this song. Both Mohammed Rafi and Hasrat Jaipuri earned Filmfare nominations in respective categories, while Shankar Jaishen took away the trophy for best composer.
8. Tumne Kise Ke Jaan Ko from Rajkumar (1964)
The movie had three popular Rafi songs penned by Hasrat Jaipuri – Is Rang Badalti Duniya Mein, Tum Ne Pukara Aur and Tumne Kise Ke Jaan Ko, and I randomly chose one among the three. Honesty I like these three songs equally. All the songs were filmed on Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana. The movie also featured Lata Mangeshkar solo, Aaja Aayi Bahar, filmed on lead pair and penned by Shailendra, who frequently collaborated with SJ in the 1950s and 1960s.
9. Tumse Acha Kaun Hai from Janwar (1965)
Shammi Kapoor teases Rajshree in this popular song. The song lyrics got well noticed, and was later used to coin another Shammi Kapoor movie co-staring Babita, who later married his nephew Randhir Kapoor. Hasrat Jaipuri penned lyrics for its popular song, Kabhi Humne Nahi Socha Tha.
10. Tum Mujhe Yu Bhula Na Paoge from Pagla Kahin Ka (1970)
This song is one among the last and popular songs of Hasrat Jaipuri for Shammi Kapoor films. With the rise of Rajesh Khanna as the new face of youth in Bollywood, most Bollywood heroes of 1960s lost their charm, and Shammi Kapoor was one among those. With the death of Jaikishen in 1971, an era virtually came to an end. Yes, the meaningful lyrics – Tum Mujhe Yu Bhula Na Paoge is apt for a situation like this. The song had two versions in Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice, and had Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh featured in both. Rafi’s version is a happy and romantic one, while Lata’s version is a sad one.
