Thyagu is a character artist of Tamil cinema, best known for comic roles. His role as a politician in Suriya starrer ‘Singam’ series is iconic. This single role earned him immense popularity and fame. His supporting role in Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan is also popular. He was also an active politician who has been associated with DMK political party for nearly three decades. He quit the party in 2011. He is the grandson of legendary violinist Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai. His son Sarang Thyagu marked his directorial debut with Aaromaley (2025), which received favourable reviews.

Thyagu started his film journey as a protagonist in the 1980s
Thyagu’s full name is Thyagarajan. He was born on 5th February 1958 into a musical family. Though his grandfather Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai was a legendary violenist, young Thyagu chose the field of acting. He started his career journey along with T. Rajendar through the super hit film, Oru Thalai Ragam released in 1980 in a supporting role. He played the role of Kannan in the movie and his role got noticed. Since then, he became a regular actor in Kollywood, playing both positive and negative shaded characters, mostly supporting and character roles. Oru Thalai Ragam, Palaivana Solai, Oomai Vizhigal, Aagaya Gangai and Pakkathu Veetu Roja in the early 1980s are his best roles. He ventured into Kannada cinema with the film Premaloka.
With late 1980s and early 1990, he mostly played antagonist on screen
With the late 1980s he started playing secondary villain in most of the movies, and he continued it in the 1990s as well. Kizhakku Vasal, Vanaja Girija, Dhinamum Ennai Gavani, Irattai Roja, My Dear Marthandan, Raasaiyya, Kumbakonam Gopalu etc are some of his notable works during this period. Though he spent more than 1 decade in the industry, he was struggling to get good roles. With the era of 2000s he started getting more roles, and he experimented with comic roles. This idea clicked and slowly he started receiving more comic roles.
His role as Harbour Shanmugam in Singam series
His most popular role familiar to new generation is Harbour Shanmugam in Singam series. He appeared in all the three films of the hit series. He has also donned roles of politician and police officer in several films. His comic roles earned him appreciation most. He appeared in movies like Gemini, Ezhumalai, Jana, Imsai Arasan 23m Pulikesi, Punnagai Poove, Thenkasi Pattanam, Pathayeram Kodi, Marudhamalai, Saamy, Saamy 2, Chandramukhi etc. post 2000s. He worked with Rajinikanth, Vikram and Suriya in many films. Likewise, he was very close to popular actor, Vijayakanth, with whom he worked since 1980s.
Thyagu has been associated with the political party DMK since 1983
He was a member of DMK from 1983 to 2011. He decided to resign, citing a lack of recognition for his efforts within the party, though he spent 28 years. Karunanidhi’s broken promise of honouring Thyagu’s grandfather with a postage stamp during his centenary celebration was also cited as reason for quitting the party. There were rumours about his joining in AIDMK.
