Prawaal Raman is a talented screenwriter and director of Bollywood, association with Ram Gopal Varma productions. In association with RGV production company, has directed experimental films of RGV – Darna Mana Hai (2003) and one segment of Darna Zaroori hai (2006), and also Tushar Kapoor starrer – Ghayab. 2011 psychological thriller film – 404 and 2015 crime thriller – Main Aur Charles are his other major works. As a director, Prawaal is known for making supernatural anthologies, psychological thrillers and gritty dramas.

Prawaal Raman - Darna Mana Hai director

Prawaal started his film journey as an assistant director under Ram Gopal Varma during late 1990s

Prawaal Raman started his career as an assistant under RGV. He assisted him as second unit director in Jungle and Company, both directed by Ram Gopal Varma. He has also remained as Creative Contributor to the production company.

Then Varma offered him to direct all the segments of his upcoming experimental anthology film, Darna Mana Hai (2003). The movie had 5 independent stories with ‘fear’ as main theme, and was praised by critics for its innovative idea and a new experimental plot. Though the movie was a flop at box office, it later became a cult classic movie.

Later he directed one segment of Darna Zaroori hai (2006), the anthology which had different directors for each story. He directed Segment 2 – “Spirits Do Come” starring Bipasha Basu, Arjun Rampal and Makrand Deshpande. But the sequel didn’t receive appreciation like Darna Mana Hai.

Ghayab and other works of Prawaal Raman

Under RGV productions, he directed Ghayab, starring Tusshar Kapoor and Antara Mali. It was a development of “Stop” segment of Darna Mana Hai, which was not directed by him. The movie was a commercial failure. It was followed by critically acclaimed projects – 404 (2011) and Main Aur Charles (2015). Main Aur Charles was appreciated at film festivals for its noir-like treatment.

In 2017, he adapted American supernatural psychological horror film, Oculus as Dobaara: See Your Evil, starring Huma Qureshi, Saqib Saleem. 2023 film, Sergeant was his last release. As per news, he is working on a web series. He also wrote the script of 2007 horror film, Darling for RGV film productions.

He is a part of a few NGOs

Apart from films, Prawaal Raman is also active in many social campaigns. He appears as guest speaker for leadership training program and also organised an anti-suicide campaign in several cities, in association with NGOs. Though he is not active in Bollywood as before, he also helps firms with his creative work. He has produced documentaries for Prayas, an NGO in New Delhi.

Prawaal Raman won a Silver Dolphin Award at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards (2017) for his short film Love You Papa, in the Corporate Image Film category. He has “life membership” in the International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy of Film & Television (Noida Film City).
