Lollu Sabha Seshu – Tamil comedian best known for the spoof show, Lollu Sabha

Lollu Sabha Seshu (1963 – 1924) was a popular comedian in Tamil cinema, best known for the iconic television show Lollu Sabha. He made memorable character appearances in some Tamil movies too. His real name is Lakshmi Narayanan Seshu, and he changed his stage name to Lollu Sabha Seshu after his appearance in the popular spoof show, Lollu Sabha in which he portrayed popular comic characters on miniscreen.

Lollu Sabha Seshu marked his acing debut with 2002 hit film Thulluvadho Ilamai. Though he appeared in small roles since then, he got recognition for the first time through the popular spoof show, Lollu Sabha. Till now audience remember him most for his appearance in this TV show, and he is known by this show name.

The spoof show Lollu Sabha made him a star

Seshu was one among the actors who featured in Lollu Sabha on Vijay TV, the series which spawned several successful comedians and gave them big break to silver screen. Some of them include popular film actors like Santhanam, Swaminathan, Jeeva, Balaji, Yogi Babu, Maaran and Madhumitha. In fact actors like Balaji, Maaran and Manohar apart from Seshu added the tag ‘Lollu Sabha’ to their screen names. The show was aired during 2003-2008. His spoof of late actress Gandhimathi’s role from Mann Vasanai (1983) remains one of the most memorable performances.

Later Seshu has appeared in a few TV shows – Chinna Papa Periya Papa Season 2 & 3, Comedy Bazaar, Deepavali Deepavali, Mama Maaple and Joking Bad.

He made notable performance in A1

His role as a Brahmin Iyer who speak North Madras Tamil in the hit film A1 (2019) remains one of this most memorable film appearances. He played an alcoholic who creates nuisance in a relative’s funeral and his absurd humour turned out to be a high point of the film.

Some of Lollu Sabha Seshu’s noted film appearances include – Velayudham (2011), Draupathi (2020), Dikkiloona (2021), Parris Jeyaraj (2021), Gulu Gulu (2022), Naai Sekar Returns (2022), 80s Buildup (2023), Kick (2023) and Vadakkupatti Ramasamy (2024). His combination scenes with Santhanam in films like ‘A1’, ‘Dikkiloona’ and ‘Parris Jeyaraj’ are memorable.

He was active in Tamil cinema, while he suffered from a sudden heart attack on 15 March 2024. He went through a heart surgery also. But he died on 26 March 2024, at the age of 60. His movies – Aranmanai 4, Brother and a few more were released posthumously.

Lollu Sabha Seshu – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. His film debut happened with Thulluvadho Ilamai in 2002, which is also the debut film of Dhanush.

2. In 2020, Seshu starred in his son Abhilash’s short film Aurora.

3. In March 2024, a few days before his death, all the actors of Lollu Sabha were brought together in Vijay Park for a reunion, and Seshu was the one who organized everything. They were not in touch for nearly 20 years before this reunion.

4. After his death, Director Johnson of A1 fame claimed that the actor could not be saved as he didn’t get Rs 10 lakh for treatment.
