Ramanan – the bestseller of year 1936, is widely regarded as the best pastoral elegy in Malayalam literature, written by Changampuzha Krishna Pillai for his friend, Edappally Raghavan Pillai, both known as Shelley-Keats combo of Malayalam poetry. They romanticized Malayalam poetry in the early 20th century, giving it a new direction. Writing in simple language, they popularized poetry among youth. Both belonged to same place, Edapally and were thick friends too. Both were gaining popularity, when young poet Raghavan Pillai, aged 27 hanged himself to death.

Raghavan Pillai was a poor poet, who fell in love with a rich girl, for whom he took tuition to earn livelihood. The girl left him & married a rich guy, & on their wedding night, Raghavan committed suicide. He was wearing a garland around his neck when he was found hanging next day. One day prior to it, he wrote his last poem, ‘Nalathe Prabhatham’ (Tomorrow’s Sunrise), & handed over to a daily, to be printed next day. The poem was about embracing death. The lines began with ‘To kiss you tomorrow, hey daybreak…..‘

Fully shattered by his friend’s death, Changanpuzha wrote Ramanan as a play in verse form & published same year. It became the bestseller of the year, till now the most popular romantic poetry of Malayalam. He also published all remaining works of his friend, which he did in a short span of 10 yrs. Changanpuzha too struggled throughout his life & died of TB aged only 3. Thus two young poets who revolutionized romanticism in Malayalam poetry in the 1930s in their short life span got the real recognition after they have gone! Ramanan was adapted to silver screen starring Prem Nazir & Sheela, where Nazir played the role of a shepherd. Changanpuzha’s original poetry was reused as songs. Edapally’s most works were death related.

Ramanan holds the same stature of Devdas in literature & popular culture, while comparing Malayalam literature with rest of the world. Ramanan is real, as many claim Devdas to be. Men with love failures are often addressed as Ramanan, just like Devdas in popular culture. After Punjabi House(’99) was released, where Harishree Ashokan’s comedy character’s name was Ramanan, the role was such a hit, it’s also used in fun. Its Hindi version was done by Rajpal Yadav in Chup Chup Ke, which revived his career.
