Since 1991 a new category has been introduced in the most prestigious Filmfare awards for Bollywood films – Critics’ choice awards for best actor and best actresses. The choice of best movie (Critics’ choice) was introduced in the year 1971. While Filmfare award for best actor and actress goes to the popular stars, Critics’ choice awards is fully based on performance of the lead actor or actress for a particular movie. In most cases, they never match with popular choice awards. There are a few lucky actors and actresses who received Filmfare awards for these two categories for the same movie in an annual award function.
Currently Tabu leads the list in Critics’ choice category in male and female categories combined (4 awards) followed by Amitabh Bachchan with three. However Tabu never received Filmfare award for best actress. Read about 10 leading actors who never received this award.
Only four Bollywood actors have got this lucky chance to win both the awards for the same movie.
Amitabh Bachchan for Black (2006) – In 2006 Amitabh Bachchan bagged the prestigious Filmfare award for best actor and best actor (critics’ choice) for his performance as Debraj Sahai, Michelle’s teacher in Black. The movie bagged numerous awards including the entire three Critics’ choice awards – Best film, Best actor and Best Actress. He received the award after a long break of 14 years, becoming the eldest winner of this award. In 2010, he earned the award again for the movie ‘Paa’ at the age of 67. He also bagged National award for best actor for both these roles.

Rani Mukerji for Black (2006) – As explained above, the movie was awarded with Best film, Best actor and Best Actress awards by Critics. The movie also won Filmfare Award for best actor and best actress by Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji and also the best movie in popular choice. Thus Black owns a unique distinction being the only Bollywood film which won all the 6 awards, combining popular and critics’ choice. Sanjay Leela Bansali was also awarded best director for the film in popular awards category. Rani Mukerji is the only actress who bagged both these awards for a single role.

Hrithik Roshan for Koi Mil Gaya (2004) – Hrithik Roshan received his second Filmfare award for best actor for this movie. The movie also bagged him Critics’ choice for best actor. Though two sequels of this movie have already been made, Koi Mil Gaya still remains the best in terms of script, direction and performances. Hrithik’s role as mentally disabled Rohit Mehra is still regarded as his career best role in terms of performance. Movie was directed by his father Rakesh Roshan, and music composed by his uncle Rajesh Roshan.

Ranbir Kapoor for Rockstar (2012) – Rockstar is a breakthrough role of Ranbir’s Bollywood career which gave him the first Filmfare award in the best actor category. Ranbir was earlier praised for his acting talents for the movie, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, which helped him to bag Critics’ choice award for the first time in 2010. He was awarded Critics’ choice best actor award for his fine performance in the movies – Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Ranbir played the outstanding role of a Rockstar JJ which helped him to bag best actor award at both popular and critics’ choice categories.

Before I conclude, let me add the list of movies which earned both best movie and best movie (critics’ choice) awards. Only three movies have received this recognition – Basu Chatterjee’s Rajnigandha in 1975, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2006) and Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2012.
