Best Bollywood Movies of 2016 so far
Hundreds of Bollywood films release every year. Unfortunately only a handful of films manage to meet audience’s expectations. Some of them have a marathon run at Box office for star power only, while some brilliant movies goes unnoticed for lack of marketing, small stars, small budget and a few more factors. Which are those Bollywood movies which remained in limelight till Independence Day of 2016? I have added both hit and critically appreciated movies to my list. Have a look.
Sultan – One of the most awaited movies of the year, Sultan is the most successful film of 2016 so far. This Salman Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer sports film became the first one of the year to reach 300 crore club. Despite getting mixed reviews from critics, the film ran only on Salman Magic, and so I would like to add this film to the list.
Airlift– It’s regarded as Akshay Kumar’s one of the best movies in his 25-year old career. Akshay has also put a lot of efforts and hard work for the film and it’s well reflected on screen as well. Airlift proved to be the first blockbuster hit of 2016, and his heroine Nimrat Kaur also needs appreciation. It’s one among the rare movies of the year which met with both critics’ and audiences’ appreciation.
Fan – I was indeed happy to see our cute Shah Rukh Khan of 1990s back to screen. In a fading career of Khan, I think it’s one of his brilliant performances as an actor who has spent more than two and a half decades in the industry. Though the movie doesn’t hold the regular ingredients or flavours of normal Shah Rukh movies, and didn’t go in favour of huge box office records, it’s definitely one of the best among his roles the actor can feel himself proud of.
Me too a great fan of SRK who has been disappointed several times seeing his bad choices of films in the recent times, Fan definitely cheered me a lot, and I would appeal to King Khan to do similar roles in future which will be remembered by his true fans like me forever. He should never feel discouraged by its box office figures. As a fan I too got disappointed seeing a good film of SRK not giving brilliant figures at box office. But I should say the film had flaws in its second half, which affected film’s performance at box office.
Neerja – This biopic was a woman-centric film and Sonam Kapoor’s flawless acting skills matched the real hero on screen as well. Sonam has stayed in Bollywood for a long time struggling with several hero-centric roles, and apart from Khubsoorat, Neerja is best among her career roles up-to-date. The film was a huge hit at box office. I should also say, Shabana Azmi excelled as Neerja Bhanot’s mother in the film, and through this role, she gave an answer to how she won National Award for best actress 5 times, a record not easy to broken by any actor or actress.
Udta Punjab – The movie remained in limelight for several controversies including censor issues before its release itself, and online piracy issue added fumes to it. The movie opened to great critical acclaim, and was a commercial hit at box office. Years later, fans got opportunity to see Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in a single film, though they never appeared in a single frame. The movie is an eye opener to present Indian society, where youngsters get easily addicted to the world of drugs. Movie witnessed some stellar performances of its star cast, especially Alia Bhatt who played the female lead.
Kapoor and Sons – One of the big films of the year, film industry witnessed veteran actor Rishi Kapoor playing the role of ‘Kapoor’, and the movie met with both commercial and critical success. The movie also starred Rajat Kapoor, Alia Bhat, Siddharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan in pivot roles.
Wazir – This revenge saga was one of the early hits of the year, and the movie met with both commercial and critical success. It told the agonies of a wheelchair-bound chess grand master and an Anti-Terrorism Squad officer, who lost their single daughters in different incidents, and how a strange friendship develops between the two. The lead roles were played by Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar. Read more to know.
Te3n – Similar to Wazir, Te3n is also a revenge saga with Amitabh Bachchan playing the title role. Big B is at his best playing a helpless grandfather who witnessed the little girl’s death. Set in the backdrop of Kolkata, the movie was directed by Ribhu Dasgupta. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan also played noted roles in this thriller. Read more about Te3n.
Ki and Ka – Though the movie received mixed reviews from critics, it was a box office hit. The film directed by Balki casted the unconventional couple – Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor to play the title roles. Read about 10 unconventional couples on Bollywood screen.
Dishoom – John Abraham returned to Bollywood in a bang, and it’s his first hit after ‘Madras Café’. He was also seen in a cameo role in the first hit film of the year – Wazir. The movie also starred Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles.
Baaghi – The movie received negative reviews from critics. But Tiger Shroff is on a success stride, and through his amazing acting sequences and dancing skills, he mesmerized youth. Young Shraddha too got recognized through this action-romantic flick, and the movie was a smash hit at box office.
Nil Battey Sannata – Swara Bhaskar delivered her first solo hit through this low-budget film, and the film was well praised by critics. No doubt, it’s one of the best movies made in Hindi in 2016, and gives a message, age is not a limit to pursue one’s dreams to aim knowledge or academic certificates.
Houseful 3 – Despite getting bad reviews, the movie turned to be a big hit of the year. The ensemble cast included Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, and Lisa Haydon, and it was a pure masala entertainer. Akshay Kumar is a safe bet for film producers right now in Bollywood.
Rustom – Though the film couldn’t impress critics to a great instant, its tremendous response from film theaters prove that Akshay Kumar stands right there among the A-grade actors of Bollywood whose presence can make great ripples at box office. The movie with some hilarious court scenes, is a biopic of Naval Officer K.M. Nanavati, and the movie is successfully running at theatres right now.
Sarabjit – This biopic tragedy starring Aishwarya Rai and Randeep Hooda met with critical and commercial success. It was one of the most awaited films of the year, and directed by Omung Kumar who has earlier directed the biopic –Mary Kom. Sarbjitwas premiered at the 69th Cannes Film Festival.
Ghayal Once Again – One of the much awaited films of the year, Ghayal Once Again was unstoppable at box office and earned more than 57 crores at box office. A sequel to 1990 film Ghayal, the success of film proves that Sunny Deol is still popular among Bollywood fans, and his action sequences are loved by his fans across the world.
Critically acclaimed movies which failed at box office
Manoj Vajpayee starrer Aligarh, Radika Apte starrer Phobia, Irrfan Khan starrer Madaari and Nawazuddin Siddiqui – Vicky Kaushal starrer Raman Raghav 2.0 are the major films which received excellent reviews from critics, but failed at box office. Manoj Vajpayee starrer thriller, Traffic based on a real-life incident also received mixed reviews from critics, and couldn’t cash big at ticket counters.
