Top 150 Chartbuster Bollywood Songs of New Millennium (2000 – 2019)
2000 – 2019 – 20 years have gone too fast. We have turned faster and so is Bollywood and its beats of music. If we compare songs of new millennium with the decade of 1990s, we definitely get a few glimpses of melodies. Why not, several actors, composers, playback singers and lyricists who contributed and enriched the decade of 1990s have continued their work in the new millennium. Yet most music composers of 1990s lost their charm in the next two decades (only exception being A. R. Rahman), while many new music composers and singers have evolved over the years.
Among all playback voices, Shreya Ghoshal & Arijit Singh are definitely the best finds of new millennium, while Sonu Nigam established as the leading male playback voice in the early 2000s. Udit Narayan is one such playback singer, whose charm didn’t get lost in the new era. Major contributors among music composers are A. R. Rahman, Pritam, Anu Malik, Himesh Reshammiya, Amit Trivedi, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Jatin-Lalit, Nadeem-Shravan etc. A few are familiar names, while a few more got added later.
I have already prepared a list of 25 best Bollywood songs of my choice. Please have a look and come back. This is an expanded list, with songs sorted based on year of release. Though I tried to make a list of 100 best Bollywood songs of new millennium, I failed in this attempt, and hence finalized with the list of 150 songs. Yet sadly I had to leave many of my favourite songs. Please note, I have stayed away from remixes, and given preference to melodies. Please excuse, if I have missed your favourites. If you are a fan of melodies, you will definitely add these songs to your playlist.

1. Ek Pal Ka from Kaho Na Pyar Hai (2000) – Music: Rajesh Roshan, Lyrics: Vijay Akela, Playback: Lucky Ali
Best song to begin with, Kaho Na Pyar Hai is one such album which had all flavours of a new millennium. Dance and music were given so much preference throughout the movie. The iconic dance steps of Hrithik in this song are still popular even after 20 years of release. Ameesha Patel also appears in this song.
2. Kaho Na Pyar Hai from Kaho Na Pyar Hai (2000) – Music: Rajesh Roshan, Lyrics: Ibrahim Ashq, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
Rajesh Roshan earned his second Filmfare award for best music for the album. It was the most loved album of the year. The title track filmed on Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel was one of the best loved duets of the year.
3. Kyon Chalti Hai from Kaho Na Pyar Hai (2000) – Music: Rajesh Roshan, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Lucky Ali
Love is in the air! This love song was filmed on debutantes Roshan and Patel. Lucky Ali earned his first Filmfare award for this song. A couple of years later, ‘Na Tum Jaano Na Hum’ phrase of this song was used to coin a film title for a movie with Hrithik playing the male lead.
4. Jaan Kaha Hai Tu Kahan from Jungle (2000) – Music: Sandeep Chowta, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Kumar Sanu & Sunidhi Chauhan
Sandeep Chowta’s tune is indeed fresh and wonderful, and the playback singers put new life to this song with their wonderful rendition. Fardeen Khan and Urmila too made a wonderful pair onscreen.
5. Hai Naa from Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sudhakar Sharma, Playback: Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik
This song bit appears at the movie climax, and all the stars of the movie, including Salman Khan and Karishma Kapoor were featured in it. The movie ends with beautiful wedding.
6. Pyar Dilon Ka from Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sudhakar Sharma, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
The album received huge appreciation from critics, and not even a weak a track can be pointed out. That’s why I picked two of the best songs to be featured in my list. This love song was filmed on Salman Khan and Karishma Kapoor.
7. Kahi Pyar Na Ho Jaaye from Kahi Pyar Na Ho Jaaye (2000) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Rajesh Malik, Playback: Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik
The album had two versions with separate lyrics, while a combination of both these tracks was used in movie. I just loved the lovely costumes and accessories of Rani Mukerji in this song. Salman Khan too looks dashing.
8. Pardesi from Kahi Pyar Na Ho Jaaye (2000) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Rajesh Malik, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
The song had two versions filmed on the lead pair, Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji, and I loved both. Sad version was used at film climax.
9. Mere Khayalon Ki Malika from Josh (2000) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Abhijeet Bhattacharya
Aishwarya Rai appears everywhere as illusion for Chandrachur Singh in this song and it definitely happens when love is in the air.
10. Haye Mera Dil from Josh (2000) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
Definitely 2000 is one among the golden years of new generation Bollywood music. That’s why I had a bunch of year 2000 songs in this list & Anu Malik tops among composers. The romantic song featuring Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh included some good nature scenery. Alka received a Filmfare nomination for its rendering. The song has drawn inspirations from Gypsy Kings’ Djobi Djoba and Brian Hyland’s ‘Sealed with a kiss’, though Anu Malik has made the song his own.
11. Meri Neend from Chal Mere Bhai (2000) – Music: Anand Milind, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
Throughout 1990s and early 2000s, Sameer remained the busiest lyricist of Hindi cinema. He wrote countless romantic songs for different music composers, and frequently worked with Anand Milind, Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan, Jatin-Lalit etc. This romantic track is a dream sequence filmed on Sanjay Dutt and Karishma Kapoor.
12. Title track of Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya (2000) – Music: Ismail Darbar, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Sonu Nigam & K. S. Chithra
Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya was one of the early hits of Sonu Nigam’s career which cemented his position as the new lead singer of Bollywood. All the soft tracks like E Chand Teri, Jhoota Hi Sahi & Qayamat have not lost their charm yet. The title song was filmed on Keerthi Reddy and Abhishek Bachchan who marked their Bollywood screen debut in year 2000.
13. Aaja Mahiya from Fiza (2000) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
Neha Bajpai who played the brief role of Hrithik’s girlfriend in the song was very much benefited by this song. Dance sequences too are lovely.
14. Tu Fiza Hai from Fiza (2000) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
Sonu Nigam received Filmfare nomination for best playback for this song filmed on Karishma Kapoor and Bikram Saluja. It was one of the early soft romantic hit tracks of Sonu’s career. Definitely Anu Malik should be given the credit. He was one such early composer who used the voices of Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik for duets, since late 1990s. Needless to say the popular pair went on to record countless hit duets in the first half of 2000s. Check their list of duet songs here.
15. Tune Mujhe Pehchana Nahi from Raju Chacha (2000) – Music: Jatin Lalit, Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Playback: Shaan
The movie marked Kajol’s comeback to movies after her marriage, and the duo made a lovely pair on screen. Except a few songs filmed on both, viewers have forgotten everything. This is one of the earliest memorable romantic songs of Shaan’s career.
16. Kismat Se Tum from Pukar (2000) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Anuradha Paudwal
The song featuring Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor was lovely filmed on glaciers of Alaska Mountains at minus 20 degree temperature and everything related to the song is compliment. It’s a rare duet of Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal, and one of the last songs penned by legendary lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri.
17. Mere Humsafar from Refugee (2000) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
The romantic song was filmed on debutants Kareena Kapoor & Abhishek Bachchan. Anu Malik went on to win his single National film award for best music composer. After that he remained at his career peek till mid-2000s after which his career deteriorated. Sadly Bollywood’s soft melodies faced a slow death after that. Yes, we can’t enjoy Bollywood songs now, how we did one decade back. Refugee was one of the early chartbuster works of Sonu Nigam-Alka Yagnik combo.
18. Tum Dil Ki Dhadkan from Dhadkan (2000) – Music: Nadeem Shravan, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Abhijeet Bhatacharya & Alka Yagnik/Kumar Sanu
This intense love song was filmed on Suniel Shetty and Shilpa Shetty who played love birds in the movie. Nadeem Shravan received Filmfare nomination for best music. The song also had a sad version sung by Kumar Sanu. Yet my vote goes to the duet version.
19. Dil Ne Yeh Kaha from Dhadkan (2000) – Music: Nadeem Shravan, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik/Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
The song featured all the three lead actors of the movie. Udit Narayan became the ghost voice of Akshay Kumar and Kumar Sanu’s voice was used for Suniel Shetty. Shilpa Shetty gets sandwiched between two men, who love her dearly, and she is in a dilemma to choose who. Alka Yagnik received Filmfare award for best female playback. The song also had a sizzling version filmed on the trio with voices of Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik, and was filmed as an illusion of Suniel Shetty.
20. Chalo Chalo Mitwa from Nayak (2001) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Playback: Udit Narayan & Kavita Krishnamurthy
This tune was reused for the Bollywood remake of Tamil hit – Muthalvan and this romantic track featuring Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji became extremely popular.
21. Dheeme Dheeme Gaon from Zubeidaa (2001) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Kavita Krishnamurthi
Featuring Karishma Kapoor and Manoj Vajpay, Zubeidaa is one of Karishma Kapoor’s top performances. Mehndi Hai Rachnewale, Mein Albeli and So Gaye Hain are a few more popular tracks from the album.
22. Kyon Bekhudi Si from Hum Ho Gaye Aapke (2001) – Music: Nadeem Shravan, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik
One of the finest sizzling rain songs of Bollywood the song has deep shades of 90s’ magic. The picturization also recreated rain songs of 1990s. Fardeen Khan and Reema Sen were featured in this romantic song.
23. Pyar Tune Kya Kiya from Pyar Tune Kya Kiya (2001) – Music: Sandeep Chowta, Lyrics: Nitin Raikwar, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik/Chithra
The happy version was filmed on Urmila and Fardeen Khan. The album had a sad version of this title track recorded in Chithra’s voice. The dance number, Kambaqt Ishq too was extremely popular. Rondhe Hai Mujhko Tera Pyar and Mujhko Khude Ne are a few more.
24. Raat Ka Nasha from Asoka (2001) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Chithra/Abhijeet Bhattacharya
This song was filmed on Kareena Kapoor. Anu Malik used south Indian singer Chithra’s voice to record some of the songs in the early phase of Kareena and Asoka and Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon are among those.
25. Sun Sun from Asoka (2001) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Playback: Alka Yagnik & Hema Sardesai
This sizzling track filmed on Kareena Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan too was extremely popular. An edited version was used for the movie.
26. Tanhayee from Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Sonu Nigam
This heart breaking song was filmed on Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta. All the songs of Dil Chahta Hai were huge chartbusters. As I wanted to feature more movies in this list, I deleted my favourite songs – Koi Kahe, Jaane Kyon Log, Title track, Woh Ladki etc. The trio composers earned their first Filmfare nomination for this album.
27. Rabba Mere Rabba from Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai (2001) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Sonu Nigam
One of my top favourite Sonu Nigam tracks ever, it depicts how a youngster is hesitated in expressing his love, and how his heart beats with every expression of hers. The song was filmed on Kareena Kapoor and debutante Tushar Kapoor, and the movie gave first hit to the careers of both.
28. O Re Chori from Lagaan (2001) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
A. R. Rahman and Javed Akhtar earned many accolades including Filmfare and National film awards. “O Rey Chhori” is the single romantic track of the album and Alka Yagnik won Filmfare award for this song, while Udit Narayan received it for Mitwa song. Lagaan swept all music awards of the year. The song was filmed on Aamir Khan and newcomers – Gracy Singh and Rachel Shelley.
29. Madhuban from Lagaan (2001) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Asha Bhosle, Udit Narayan & Vaishali Samant
Yet another neatly choreographed song from the album, Raju Khan won National award for best choreography. This song also featured all the three lead stars who formed a love triangle. Javed Akhtar earned his National award for penning the lyrics of both Madhuban and Ghanan Ghanan. The tracks – Mitwa and Ghanan Ghanan too are extra-ordinary.
30. Mohabbat Ho Na Jaaye from Kasoor (2001) – Music: Nadeem Shravan, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik
This extremely romantic song was filmed on debutante Lisa Ray and Aftab Shivdasani, and it shows how beautiful the whole world is, when love is in the year. Nadeem Shravan remained the most loved music composer duo in the previous decade, who gave emphasis to melody than anything else.
31. Suraj Hua Maddham from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) – Music: Jatin Lalit, Lyrics: Anil Pandey, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
Suraj Hua Maddham was the first romantic song filmed on the adorable screen Jodi of 1990s – SRK & Kajol, after Kajol’s marriage with Devgan. The movie was one of the early experiments of assembling three or more music composers for a single album with good budget and A-list actors and crew, and this procedure is still trending in Bollywood.
32. Khamoshiyan Gungunane from One 2 Ka 4 (2001) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Mehboob, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Lata Mangeshkar
Glad to see a Lata Mangeshkar song featured in this list of 150 songs belonging to new generation. The song was filmed on SRK and Juhi, who are good friends in real life.
33. Meri Zindagi Mein from Ajnabee (2001) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Kumar Sanu & Sunidhi Chauhan
All the songs were huge hits, and I chose this particular track filmed on Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor to be featured in this list.
34. Zara Zara from Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001) – Music: Harris Jayaraj, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Bombay Jayashree
Harris Jayaraj reused his tune he composed for Minnale starring Madhavan and Reema Sen, the move which was later remade as RHTDM. Needless to say Hindi version filmed on Diya Mirza and Madhavan was equally popular. During my college days, when this movie was released, the song frequently featured in music shows, on listeners’ request.
35. Aapke Pyar Mein from Raaz (2002) – Music: Nadeem Shravan, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Alka Yagnik
The song was filmed on Dino Morea and debutante Malini Sharma. “Jo Bhi Kasmein Khai Thi” and “Mein Agar Saamne” filmed on Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu were equally popular.
36. Bairi Piya from Devdas (2002) – Music: Ismail Darbar, Lyrics: Nusrat Badr, Playback: Udit Narayan & Shreya Ghoshal
Bairi Piya was the first recorded song of Shreya Ghoshal’s career and she went on to win National award for this song. The song was filmed on SRK and Aishwarya Rai, and Udit Narayan’s verses were not used for the movie.
37. Kuch Kasmein Hain Jawa from Aankhein (2002) – Music: Jatin-Lalit, Lyrics: Praveen Bhardwaj, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
Sadly this lovely song was edited from the movie. The song was filmed on Sushmita Sen and Arjun Rampal. Gustakhiyan Hai filmed on Bipasha Basu and Akshay Kumar was the chartbuster song of the album.
38. Pehli Pehli Baar from Kya Yehi Pyar Hai (2002) – Music: Sajid-Wajid, Lyrics: Jalees Sherwani, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik
Definitely Kya Yehi Pyar Hai is the career best work of Sajid-Wajid, and Pehli Pehli Baar featuring Aftab Shivdasani and Ameesha Patel, Meri Tarah, Dil Pe Chaane Lagi and O Maahi Ve were huge hits.
39. Dil Ki Nazar Mein from Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai (2002) – Music: Sajid-Wajid , Lyrics: Jalees Sherwani, Playback: Kumar Sanu / Alka Yagnik
My favourite track from the album is Dil Ki Nazar Mein which was not featured in the movie. Both solo versions are wonderful.
40. Pyar Se Pyare from Deewangee (2002) – Music: Ismail Darbar, Lyrics: Salim Bijnori, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Kavita Krishnamurthy
The song was filmed on Akshaye Khanna and Urmila. There is one more duet, Saasein Saasein Hain filmed on same pair and sung by same singers. Dholi O Dholi and Hai Ishq Khata were dance songs filmed on Urmila, and the duet, Saat Suron Ka filmed on Ajay Devgan and Urmila too was popular.
41. Tune Zindagi Mein from Humraaz (2002) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sudhakar Sharma, Playback: Udit Narayan /Alka Yagnik
This song filmed as a party number was filmed on Bobby Deol and Ameesha Patel. Udit Narayan’s version was used for the movie.
42. Yeh Bekhudi Deewangi from Tumko Na Bhool Jayenge (2002) – Music: Sajid Wajid, Lyrics: Rashid Khan, Playback: Sonu Nigam
The song was filmed on Salman Khan and Diya Mirza, the single movie where they worked together.
43. Saathiya from Saathiya (2002) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Sonu Nigam
The title track established Sonu Nigam as the leading voice of Bollywood. After a struggling period of almost a decade, Sonu Nigam emerged as the new voice of new millennium in the early 2000s and this particular song cemented his position in Bollywood music. He also received his first Filmfare award for the beautiful rendition of this romantic track. Its original Tamil version was sung by Hariharan. The song featuring Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji expressed different colours of love. But let me say, I feel Tamil version was better, especially because of the lovely lyrics penned by Vairamuthu.
44. Chupke Se from Saathiya (2002) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Sadhana Sargam, Murtuza Khan & Qadir Khan
“Snehithane” – Tamil version filmed on Madhavan and Shalini definitely has an upper hand over Hindi version. Yet Sadhana Sargam beautiful sang both these versions. In fact Snehithane was the most popular track of Tamil album – Alaippayuthe when it got released. Hindi version was filmed on Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji.
45. Kabhi Shyam Dale from Sur: The Melody of Love (2002) – Music: M. M. Keeravani, Lyrics: Nida Fazli, Playback: Mahalakshmi Iyer
The song filmed on Gauri Karnik appears at the movie climax where she appears as a performer on stage. Lucky Ali and supporting cast also appear in the song.
46. Aye Mere Zindagi from Saaya (2003) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Sayeed Quadri, Playback: Udit Narayan / Shreya Ghoshal
The song had different solo versions sung in different moods, and filmed on Tara Sharma and John Abraham. The duet, “O Sathiya” composed by guest composer M. M. Kreem is equally popular.
47. Mann Ki Lagan from Paap (2003) – Music: Shahi, Lyrics: Amjad Islam Amjad, Playback: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
The song marked the Bollywood debut of singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who went on to establish as one of the leading playback voices of Bollywood. The song was filmed on John Abraham and Udita Goswami.
48. Tumse Milna from Tere Naam (2003) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
Tere Naam was one of the early hits of Himesh’s career. Odni was the top chartbuster song of the album. Yet my vote goes to Tumse Milna, filmed on Salman Khan and Bhumika Chawla.
49. Har Khadi of Kal Ho Na Ho (2003) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Sonu Nigam
With the change of millennium Sonu Nigam established as the leading male playback voice. While Udit Narayan kept on going, Kumar Sanu took a break from active singing and concentrated on politics. This particular song has a rare feat – It received three National film awards – for best music album, best lyricist and best male playback voice. The song also received respective Filmfare awards. Alka Yagnik also received a nomination at Filmfare for the sad rendition solo. No doubt Har Khadi Badal Rahi Hai filmed on SRK, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan is one among the top 5 songs of past 20 years.
50. Kasam Ki Kasam from Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Playback: Shaan & K. S. Chithra
Anu Malik composed a string of songs for Kareena Kapoor right from her debut flick, Refugee. This soft song filmed on Kareena, Hrithik & Abhishek is definitely one of the finest tracks of the decade, and its lyrics penned by Dev Kohli lifted the song to a new level.
51. Aao Naa from Kyon Ho Gaya Na (2004) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Shankar Mahadevan, Sadhana Sargam & Udit Narayan
Sadhana Sargam is the main voice of this romantic track, and hence Aao Naa is best remembered as her song. The song was filmed on Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi, while they were dating.
52. Agar Mein Kahoo from Lakshya (2004) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
This beautiful duet featuring Preity Zinta and Hrithik has some nice choreographed dance moves. I chose this song, particularly for its unique lyrics penned by Akhtar.
53. Dhoom Machale from Dhoom (2004) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Tata Young/Sunidhi Chauhan
The top chartbuster song of the year, both versions were popular. Tata Young’s version was used as a promo song, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Uday Chopra, while Sunidhi’s version featured Esha Deol.
54. Jaanam Dekhlo from Veer Zaara (2004) – Music: Madan Mohan, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Udit Narayan
Legendary composer Madan Mohan’s unused tunes were used for Shah Rukh starrer 30 years after his death, which earned him the last Filmfare nomination. This popular romantic track was filmed on Preity Zinta and SRK.
55. Mein Hoon Na from Mein Hoon Na (2004) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Shreya Ghoshal
Anu Malik received his second Filmfare award for Mein Hoon Na. The title track was filmed on Amrita Rao, Zayed Khan and SRK.

Yet another popular track from the album, it’s a dance sequence featuring all its lead actors – SRK, Sushmita, Amrita and Zayed.

The song had two versions – a soft and remixed version. The remixed version was used for the movie as a club song, where Diya Mirza appears as a club dancer, and Emraan Hashmi as a spectator.
58. Saasom Mein from Hum Tum (2004) – Music: Jatin Lalit, Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi, Playback: Babul Supriyo & Alka Yagnik
Alka Yagnik received her 7th and final Filmfare award for this extremely popular romantic song, filmed on Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji. All the songs of Hum Tum were extremely popular, and the movie registered the first solo hit of Khan’s career, and bagging him National award for best actor.
59. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata from Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities (2004) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Rahat Indori, Playback: Reena Bhardwaj
This soft track was filmed on Tabu. “Chinnamma Chilakkamma” sung by Sukhwinder Singh also got noticed.
60. Zindagi Mein Koyi from Musafir (2004) – Music: Vishal Shekhar, Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Playback: Krishna Beura/Richa Sharma/ Sukhwinder Singh
The song had three versions, and sad version sung by Richa Sharma was used in full length for the movie. The song was filmed on Anil Kapoor and Sameera Reddy. Dev Kohli’s lyrics are wonderful.
61. Nazar Aa Raha from Aitraaz (2004) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik
The melodious track brought back the magic of melodies of 1990s. However this song was not used in the movie.
62. Paigham Laya Sawan from Lakeer – Forbidden Lines (2004) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Mehboob Khan, Playback: Shaan & Kavita Krishnamurthy
Originally composed for Tamil film Rhythm in 2000, the album was a huge chartbuster. Most of the songs were re-used for Lakeer in 2004, but couldn’t recreate the success of the original. In fact songs of Rhythm became more popular than Alaippayuthey released the same year, which was later remade as Saathiya, particularly Katte reused as Paigaam and Taniye reused as Nachle.
63. Sawariya from Swades (2004) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Alka Yagnik
A beautiful expression of love, the song was filmed on King of romance and debutante Gayatri Joshi. Alka received Filmfare nomination for this song.
64. Chup Chupke from Bunty Aur Babli (2005) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Mahalakshmi Iyer
The movie was released when Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji were dating, and the song was shot as their sweet honeymoon days soon after tying knot. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy received Filmfare award for best music for this album.
65. Kajra Re from Bunty Aur Babli (2005) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Shankar Mahadevan, Javed Ali & Alisha Chinoy
When the song was filmed on Big B, Small B and Ash in year 2005, we had hardly imagined that Ash is to become a part of Bachchan family a couple of years later. Interestingly Aishwarya tries to woo Big B in this special item number. Alisha Chinoy received her single Filmfare award for this song.
66. Jiya Dhadak Dhadak Jaye from Kalyug (2005) – Music: Rohail Hyatt & Faisal Rafi, Lyrics: Sayeed Quadri, Playback: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Magical voice of Rahat lifted this song to a new level, and no words to explain the beauty. The song was filmed on Smilie Suri and Kunal Khemu.
67. Juda Hoke Bhi (Adat) from Kalyug (2005) – Music: Jal, Lyrics: Sayeed Quadri, Playback: Atif Aslam
Yet another chartbuster song from the album, Emraan Hashmi was featured in the remixed version. Original sad version was filmed on Kunal Khemu.
68. Laga Laga Laga Re from Meine Pyar Kyon Kiya (2005) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Kamaal Khan & Alka Yagnik
Sushmita Sen appears gorgeous and sexy in orange sari in this rain song. The song tries to bring back some moments of ‘Mein Hoon Na’, where Sushmita appears beautiful in traditional Indian sari. Kamaal Khan’s voice fits perfectly for Salman Khan, no doubt.
69. Lucky Lips from Lucky: No Time for Love (2005) – Music: Adnan Sami, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Asha Bhosle
It’s hard to believe that 60-year old Asha Bhosle sang for 16-year old Sheha Ullal, who marked debut with Lucky. It’s the first album of Adnan Sami as a Bollywood composer too.
70. Aashique Banaya Aapne from Aashique Banaya Aapne (2005) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Himesh Reshammiya & Shreya Ghoshal/ Himesh Reshammiya
This sizzling romantic number made Himesh overnight sensation, and marked his singing debut. He bagged Filmfare award for best male playback singer for its duet version, a very rare feat achieved by any music composer at award nights. He sang its popular remixed version too. Bollywood’s hottest song ever was pictured on Emraan Hashmi and debutante Tanushree Dutta. Since then he sang numerous chartbuster songs for Emraan, both soft and remixed versions.
71. Agar Tum Mil Jao from Zeher (2005) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Sayeed Quadri, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal/Udit Narayan
The song had two solo versions recorded in Shreya and Udit Narayan’s voices, and female version filmed on Emraan Hashmi, Shamita Shetty and Udita Goswami was most popular. Anu Malik composed this extremely popular song which is actually a copied version of Agar Tum Mil Jao Zamana Chod of Pakistani film, Imandar released in 1974 and sung by Tasawar Khanum. Its lines too – is a direct lift with a few modifications done by Sayeed Quadri and Shakeel Azmi.

One of the best heart breaking love songs filmed on Salman Khan, the song also features Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar.

Rani Mukerji looks gorgeous in chiffon saris throughout the song, and Shah Rukh looks dashing. Title track, Mitwa, Rock N Roll, Where’s The Party – chartbuster songs are many.
74. Mere Haath Mein from Fanaa (2006) – Music: Jatin Lalit, Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi, Playback: Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan & Sulaiman Merchant
The song was filmed soon after the marriage of Kajol and Aamir Khan is solemnized in the film. The song definitely has some intense moments, which touch our hearts. Chand Sifarish and Dekho Na are other hits.
75. Barso Re Megha from Guru (2007) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal & Uday Mazumdar
‘Rai’ is just ‘n’ short of Rain, and Aishwarya Rai looks extremely beautiful in this rain song. A. R. Rahman bagged Filmfare award for best music for Guru. Shreya Ghoshal bagged Filmfare award for best music for this monsoon song.
76. Cheeni Kam Hai from Cheeni Kum (2007) – Music: Illayaraja, Lyrics: Sameer & Manoj Tapadia, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal
The pairing of Tabu & Big B broke all stereotypes and the movie was a commercial hit. “Mandram Vantha” from the Tamil film Mouna Raagam was reused as the title track, and its male version, Sooni Sooni was sung by Vijay Prakash.
77. Jaane Do Naa from Cheeni Kum (2007) – Music: Illayaraja, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal
Adapted from Kannada and Tamil versions which the composer tuned in the 1980s, the Hindi version reused two decades later looked fresh and new. Shreya’s Baatein Hawa was a similar reused track originally composed in the 1980s.
78. Hey Shona from Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007) – Music: Vishal-Shekhar, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Shaan & Sunidhi Chauhan
Though the movie was a huge flop, a couple of duets filmed on Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan – Hey Shona & Ab To Forever became extremely popular.
79. Ishq Hua from Aaja Nachle (2007) – Music: Salim Sulaiman, Lyrics: Jaideep Sahni, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal
The comeback movie of Madhuri Dixit had two popular tracks – Aaja Nachle & O Re Piya. Romantic track Aaja Nachle was filmed on Konkana Sen Sharma & Kunal Kapoor.
80. Mein Agar Kahoon from Om Shanti Om (2007) – Music: Vishal-Shekhar, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Shreya Ghoshal
The movie has a bunch of lovely songs, and Mein Agar Kahoon filmed on SRK & debutante Deepika is my personal choice for the best track of the album. Except Shreya, all others bagged Filmfare nominations in music category.
81. Mere Dolna from Bhool Bhalayya (2007) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Sameer, Playback: M. G. Sreekumar & Shreya Ghoshal
This classical song filmed on Vineeth and Vidya Balan was not a huge chartbuster when got released. But over the years, it earned a huge list of fans. Yes, thanks to Pritam for such an amazing tune and also the playback singers.
82. Bol Na Halke from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Rahet Fateh Ali Khan & Mahalakshmi Iyer
This evergreen romantic track was filmed on Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan. This particular helped Rahet Fateh Ali Khan to establish in Hindi film industry. Yet Iyer was not much benefited with the success of this song. But definitely it’s her career best song in Bollywood.
83. Tum Se Hi from Jab We Met (2007) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Irshad Kamil, Playback: Mohit Chauhan
The song filmed on Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor is one among my personal favourites always. Rain moments filmed on both are too lovely.

Shreya Ghoshal bagged National award for best female playback singer for this lovely choreographed song, while she bagged Filmfare award for Barso Re same year. The song was filmed on Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, who were dating back then.
85. Falak Tak Chal from Tashan (2008) – Music: Vishal Shekhar, Lyrics: Kausar Munir, Playback: Udit Narayan & Mahalakshmi Iyer
The movie included some of the finest tracks, and this duet filmed on Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor with splendid beauty of Kerala is my top choice.

Genelia D’Souza losses her kitten and very much depressed, and her dearest friend Imran Khan tries to comfort her. The song and the pair are too cute.
87. Pappu Can’t Dance from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Jaa (2008) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Abbas Tyrewala, Playback: Tanvi, Satish Subramanium, Mohd Aslam, Darshana, Blaaze, Benny Dayal and Anupama Deshpande
This album introduced many new voices to Bollywood industry. Wonderfully choreographed song with catchy lyrics, Pappu Can’t Dance was an instant chartbuster. The song was rendered by a list of less-heard voices then. Imran Khan, Genelia D’Souza and a bunch of youngsters entertained everyone with their unseen dance steps.
88. Pehli Nazar from Race (2008) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Sameer & Taz, Playback: Atif Aslam
Top romantic song of the album, it was filmed on Akshay Khanna and Bipasha Basu.
89. Teri Ori from Singh is Kingg (2008) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Mayur Puri, Playback: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan & Shreya Ghoshal
Shreya received Filmfare award & IFFA for best female playback. The song featuring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif was shot at the Pyramids in Giza, Egypt.
90. Tu Meri Aduri from Ghajini (2008) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi, Playback: Javed Ali & Sonu Nigam
The song was initially recorded in Sonu Nigam’s voice and later re-recorded in Javed Ali’s voice, while the original humming was retained. The song featured Aamir Khan and debutante Asin.
91. Tu Muskura from Yuvraaj (2008) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Gulzar, Playback: Javed Ali & Alka Yagnik
The song is a finest rendition of Alka Yagnik and Javed Ali with back vocals provided by Rahman. Who says Rahman can’t tune classical songs? And Javed Ali perfectly nailed it at the song climax. The song was filmed on Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.
92. In Lamhon Ki from Jodha Akbar (2008) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Javed Ali
The song filmed on Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai appears at the climax of the film, which depicts their consummation after marriage.
93. Bebo Mein Bebo from Kambakkht Ishq (2009) – Music: Anu Malik, Lyrics: Anvita Dutt Guptan, Playback: Alisha Chinoy, Suzanne D’Mello and Anushka Manchanda
This sizzling track was filmed on Bebo and Akshay Kumar. Alisha’s voice is so unique, timeless and magical. I really wish she had sung a few more songs in Bollywood.

Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor and a dove – the song was one of the most loved songs of the year. Rahman and Mohit bagged Filmfare awards, while Joshi bagged a nomination.
96. Shukr Allah from Kurbaan (2009) – Music: Vishal-Shekhar, Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi, Playback: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal & Salim Merchant
The song featuring real-life couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor was one of the top chartbusters of the year. Title track also got noticed.

One of the finest songs of the decade, the composer used drums for its recording. The song was filmed on Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif who later dated for a few years.
100. Chor Bazaari from Love Aaj Kal (2009) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Irshad Kamil, Playback: Neeraj Shridhar & Sunidhi Chauhan
The movie starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone had a bunch of good songs, and the dance sequence – Chor Bazaari is my personal favourite.
101. Tere Naina from Chandni Chowk To China (2009) – Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyrics: Rajat Arora, Playback: Shankar Mahadevan & Shreya Ghoshal
Yet another Deepika song released the same year, it was one of the underrated songs when it got released. Now it’s widely regarded as one of the best soft melodies of 2000s. The song was filmed on Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone, the single movie for which they were casted as a pair.
102. Iktara from Wake Up Sid (2009) – Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Kavita Seth
Kavitha bagged Filmfare award for best female playback. However she was not benefitted much after the huge popularity of this soft song filmed on Ranbir Kapoor and Konkana Sen Sharma.
103. Chori Kiya Re Jiya from Dabangg (2010) – Music: Sajid Wajid, Lyrics: Jalees Sherwani, Playback: Sonu Nigam & Shreya Ghoshal
The romantic song was filmed on Salman Khan and debutante Sonakshi Sinha, and they worked together in three movies released till now in Dabangg series. Tere Mast Mast Do Nain is yet another melodious track from the album, which was awarded Filmfare award for best music.
104. Munni Badnam Hui from Dabangg (2010) – Music: Lalit Pandit, Lyrics: Lalit Pandit, Playback: Mamta Sharma, Aishwarya Nigam & Master Saleem
Munni Badnam Hui filmed on Malaika Arora was the top chartbuster of the year, and perhaps the most popular item song of Bollywood ever. The song became a rag across the nation when got released. Both its lyrics and music were copied from an old Pakistani song, Ladka Badnaam Hua, which itself is inspired from Bhojpuri folk song, Launda Badnaam Hua.
105. Sheila Ki Jawani from Tees Maar Khan (2010) – Music: Vishal Shekhar, Lyrics: Vishal Dadlani, Playback: Sunidhi Chauhan & Vishal Dadlani
Munni Badnam Hui or Sheila Ki Jawani – debate still continues, which one is the best. Both were choreographed by Farah Khan. My favourite is Sheila Ki Jawani filmed on Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar. The song also featured the composer Vishal Dadlani who brought some light comic elements to the song. Sunidhi Chauhan shared Filmfare award with Mamta Sharma that year. Yes, it’s really difficult to find which song is the best.
106. Bahara from I Hate Luv Storys (2010) – Music: Vishal-Shekhar, Lyrics: Kumaar, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal
Bahara is one of the most loved songs of the past decade, definitely. The song featuring Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan also pour some light on how songs and romantic scenes are made in Bollywood.
107. Sadka Kiya from I Hate Luv Storys (2010) – Music: Vishal-Shekhar, Lyrics: Anvita Dutt Guptan, Playback: Suraj Jagan & Mahalakshmi Iyer
Sadka Kiya featuring Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan is my favourite track from the album. Noted TV actor and model, Aamir Ali also appears in the song as a romantic hero.
108. Tu Na Jaane Aas Paas from Anjaana Anjaani (2010) – Music: Vishal Shekhar, Lyrics: Vishal – Shekhar, Playback: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan & Shruti Pathak
The divine voice of Rahat and mystic lyrics by the composers make Tu Na Jaane Aas Paas one of the finest songs of the decade. The song was filmed on Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
109. Chammak Chalo from Ra. One (2011) – Music: Vishal Shekhar, Lyrics: Vishal Dadlani, Playback: Hamsika Iyer & Akon
The dancing sequence was filmed on Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor, and the huge chartbuster can never miss this list. Yet the sad song, Bhare Naina is my personal favourite.
110. Tum Ho from Rockstar (2011) – Music: A. R. Rahman, Lyrics: Irshad Kamil, Playback: Mohit Chauhan & Suzanne D’Mello
Rahman received his last Filmfare award for Rockstar in year 2012, and it’s 8 years since then. All the songs got noticed, and I preferred to choose this track.
111. Tere Mere from Bodyguard (2011) – Music: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyrics: Shabbir Ahmed, Playback: Rahet Fateh Ali Khan & Shreya Ghoshal
The top romantic song of the year 2011, this duet featuring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor was the highlight of the movie. Though Himesh Reshammiya’s song was accused to be a copy of a Romanian song, it became extremely popular among music lovers. Definitely its Mukda was copied, but not its Antara.

The song featuring Genelia D’Souza appears in the opening credits of the movie.

Highly emotional Abhi Mujh Mein is one of the career best songs of Sonu Nigam. The song featured Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra.

The movie included one duet and 4 solos – three in male voices and the rest one in Mahalakshmi’s voice. This song featured Aftab Shivdasani and Tia Bajpai.

English Vinglish marked glorious comeback of Sridevi and Gustaq Dil is my favourite song from the album.
117. Jiya Laage Na from Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012) – Music: Ram Sampath, Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Playback: Ravindra Upadhyay & Sona Mohapatra
The song featuring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor holds some kind of secrecy in the lyrics as well as filming, which is revealed only in the film climax.
118. Pani Da from Vicky Donor (2012) – Music: Ayushmann Khurrana, Lyrics: Ayushmann Khurrana & Rochak Kohli, Playback: Ayushmann Khurrana
Pani Da song is a one-man show of Ayushmann Khurrana, which worked perfectly too. Yami Gautam was featured aside Khurrana in this song, and he became the youngest playback singer to win Filmfare award for best male playback at the age of 28. The following year the record was broken by Arijit Singh, who went to make a rally of awards in this category.
119. Pareshaan from Ishaqzaade (2012) – Music: Amit Trivedi, Lyrics: Kausar Munir, Playback: Shalmali Kholgade
Shalmali Kholgade earned Filmfare award for best female playback for this song filmed on Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor. The song was one of the most loved songs of the year, and still loved by music fans.
120. Kabhi Jo Badal Barse from Jackpot (2013) – Music: Sharib Toshi, Lyrics: Turaz & Azeem Shirazi, Playback: Arijit Singh
This romantic rain song was filmed on Sunny Leone and Sachiin Joshi. The movie is long forgotten except this soft track.
121. Nagada Sang from Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013) – Music: Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Lyrics: Siddharth–Garima, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal & Osman Mir
This dance sequence brings back memories of ‘Dol Baaje’ of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, directed by Bhansali. The song was filmed on Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.
122. Aashiqui Tum Ho from Aashiqui 2 (2013) – Music: Mithoon, Lyrics: Mithoon, Playback: Arjit Singh
This single rain song established Arjit Singh as the leading male playback singer of Hindi cinema. This song earned him the first Filmfare award for best playback singer, and after that he received most awards of this decade in this category, and also equalled Kumar Sanu’s record of 5 awards in a row. This romantic song filmed on Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is perhaps the most loved song of last two decades. No doubt, Aashiqui Tum Ho is the Bollywood song of the decade. Music composers of the movie jointly earned Filmfare award for best music.

I have noticed many melodious compositions of Reshammiya, but not featured in the movies. Haal-E-Dil Mera is one such. The song had two versions, recorded in the voices of Neeti Mohan and Sreerama Chandra Mynampati. When I prepared the top songs of year 2016, this song topped my list. I am fully addicted to this song ever since I listened it for the first time.

Both versions featuring Alia Bhatt became popular. I just loved its lyrics, written years back by Shiv Kumar Batalvi.

Though Rahet Fateh Ali Khan was nominated at Filmfare awards in male playback category, he didn’t receive the honour. However the female rendition by Neha Bhasin earned an award at Filmfare.

This romantic soft song was filmed on Taapsee Pannu and Taher Shabbir was one of the top chartbuster songs of the year. Taher had only a brief role in the film. Still it was memorable.

It’s after a long time, a romantic song of SRK touched listeners’ hearts and his fans loved this romantic avatar. Anushka Sharma is wonderful, SRK is magic with his lovely dance steps and so are its artists associated with it. I got addicted to this song so much that I can listen to this song over and over without any break. All the artists associated with this colourful song received Filmfare nominations.
149. Ghar More Pardesi from Kalank (2019) – Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya, Playback: Shreya Ghoshal & Vaishali Mhade
Melodious vocals and the scenic picturisation upon Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit and Varun Dhawan make Ghar More Pardesi one of the finest classical tuned songs of the decade. When Shreya was not given best female playback singer by Filmfare, they have to face a lot of criticisms from netizens. Yes, I too believe Shreya deserved the honour more than any other singer. Remo D’Souza choreographed the song, and the outfits were designed by Manish Malhotra.
150. Teri Mitti from Kesar (2019) – Music: Arko, Lyrics: Manoj Muntashir, Playback: B Praak
Goosebumps for such a lovely piece of music, heart touching rendition as well as wonderful lyrics, which is not common in Bollywood nowadays. The song gives glimpses of the last few moments of a soldier’s life, his dreams and memories, and the situation is very much related to the tragic climax of a real life incident, when Sikhs fought Battle of Saragarhi against British to save their honours. I think definitely “Teri Mitti” is the best patriotic song happened after “Sandeshe Aate Hain”; the song moved many human hearts and forced them to shed a few tears too.
