20 Years & 25 Songs – 25 Best Bollywood Songs of new millennium (2000-2019)

We are now in the fancy year 2020. 20 years have passed in a flash of moments giving us some of the finest songs. Each decade is distinct and holds a special beauty when it comes to Bollywood. Bollywood songs have slowly changed its pace from 1940s to the most recent 2020s, and it is easily possible to identify the decade which the song belongs to. Though the superstars of 1990s still dominate Bollywood cinema now also, there has been a slow shift of sweet 90’s melodies to the recent fast tracks, where so much importance is given to musical instruments and loud music.

Each era has designed loud music or western music to attract younger audiences, a trend which is followed till now. While we can easily distinguish songs of different decades earlier, transformation from late 2000s to the decade of 2010s is not so huge. Also lead stars of 2010s remain the same, because of which we are not caring about transformation. Yet I should agree, quality of Bollywood songs have very much decreased, and many classic hits have been revived by giving loud music. Now it is era where total number of hits determines if a song is popular or not. Also read: Top 150 Bollywood songs of new millennium

It has been not an easy task for me to choose best 25 songs of the past two decades. It took a lot of efforts to filter the best of the best. As I gave preference to melody and uniqueness of tune rather than number of hits achieved by the song, I am not sure if my list of top 25 Bollywood songs of new century/millennium will appeal you or not. Yet it’s my humble effort to bring some of the finest tunes of the recent times. Along with the list of 25 best Bollywood songs, I have also put on separate lists for a few more popular lists which you will love to add to your playlist. I am sure you will find most of your favourite melodies somewhere in my list of 475+ songs. Yes, it was a huge effort from my side. Yet, I have stayed away from remixes, and tried to stick on to original tunes only.

25 Best Bollywood Songs of past two decades of new millennium

1. Saathiya from Saathiya (2002) – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman, Lyricist: Gulzar, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam

Let me begin the list with the most popular song of Rahman-Sonu combo, which gave the singer the first Filmfare award. Rahman also received Filmfare award, and the songs were huge chartbusters. Saathiya (2002) was a remake of Maniratnam’s Alaippayuthey (2000), my most favourite Rahman album ever, with Hariharan’s original rendition – Pachai Nirame, my most favourite song. Sonu’s version can’t be compared with the rendition of ghazal maestro. Yet he has given his best.

sonu nigam hits

Gulzar’s lyrics couldn’t match in excellence with Vairamuthu’s Tamil lyrics, depicting 7 colours of love, and Sonu Nigam took some extra effort while singing, while Hariharan sang it freely. The song played a magnificent role in establishing him as the top male voice of the decade, taking over the throne earlier owned by Kumar Sanu. The song was filmed on Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji.

2. Aashiqui Tum Ho from Aashiqui 2 (2013) – Music Composer: Mithoon, Lyricist: Mithoon, Playback Singer(s): Arjit Singh

Tum Hi Ho – Top Bollywood song of the decade (2010-2019)

This single rain song established Arijit Singh as the leading male playback singer of Hindi cinema. This song earned him the first Filmfare award for best playback singer, and after that he received most awards of this decade in this category, and also equalled Kumar Sanu’s record of 5 awards in a row. This romantic song filmed on Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is perhaps the most loved song of last two decades. No doubt, Aashiqui Tum Ho is the Bollywood song of the decade. Music Composers of the movie jointly earned Filmfare award for best music.

3. Kyon Chalti Hai from Kaho Na Pyar Hai (2000) – Music Composer: Rajesh Roshan, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Lucky Ali

The song is more or less a dream sequence filmed on Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel. Rajesh Roshan earned his second Filmfare award for best music for the album. It was the most loved album of the year, and each and every track was a chartbuster. It was a difficult task for me to pick Kyon Chalti Hai or Ik Pal Ka Jeena, both sung by Lucky Ali. In fact Lucky Ali earned his first Filmfare award for the song, Kyon Chalti Hai. A couple of years later, ‘Na Tum Jano Na Hum’ phrase of this song was used as film title for a movie with Hrithik playing the male lead. Kaho Na Pyar Hai was the perfect launch pad of Hrithik.

4. Rabba Mere Rabba from Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai  (2001) – Music Composer: Anu Malik, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam

One of my top favourite Sonu Nigam tracks ever, it depicts how a youngster is hesitated in expressing his love, and how his heart beats with every expression of hers. The song was filmed on Kareena Kapoor and Tushar Kapoor, and the movie gave first hit to the careers of both. It was Tushar’s first movie. There is one Tamil song, Thaneerai Kaadhalikum from Romeo (Tamil) composed by Rahman in 1996. I got one intro tune from that song copied as such for Rabba Mere Rabba song. In Rabba Rabba this particular tune with similar music arrangement appears just before the start of first Antara, while in original Tamil version it appears just before second Antara. Just check youtube videos to know it.

5. Har Khadi of Kal Ho Na Ho (2003) – Music Composer: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyricist: Javed Akhtar, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam

One of the major transformations of the new millennium music of Bollywood is the emergence of Sonu Nigam, who was only a struggling singer throughout 1990s. With late 1990s itself he started getting more offers and with year 2000-2001 he established as the leading male playback voice. While Udit Narayan kept on going, Kumar Sanu took a break from active singing and concentrated on politics.

This particular song has a rare feat – It received three National film awards – for best music album, best lyricist and best male playback voice. The song also received respective Filmfare awards; a great achievement. Alka Yagnik also received a nomination at Filmfare for the sad rendition solo. No doubt Har Khadi Badal Rahi Hai filmed on SRK, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan is one among the top 5 songs of past 20 years.

6. Tere Mere from Bodyguard (2011) – Music Composer: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyricist: Shabbir Ahmed, Playback Singer(s): Rahet Fateh Ali Khan & Shreya Ghoshal

The top romantic song of the year 2011, this duet featuring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor was the highlight of the movie. Though Himesh Reshammiya’s song was accused to be a copy of a Romanian song, it became extremely popular among music lovers. Definitely its Mukda was copied, but not its Antara. A few years later, the song ‘Teri Meri Kahani’ from Gabbar Is Back featuring Kareena Kapoor & Akshay Kumar revived some moments of this iconic song – That’s what I felt while watching the song for the first time. Beginning lines of the song implied the same.

7. Haye Mera Dil from Josh (2000) – Music Composer: Anu Malik, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik

josh movie songs

Year 2000 was definitely the best year for Anu Malik and he received praises for composing Josh. The romantic song featuring Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh included some good nature scenery. Alka received a Filmfare nomination for its rendering. The song has drawn inspirations from Gypsy Kings’ Djobi Djoba and Brian Hyland’s ‘Sealed with a kiss’, though he has made the song his own.

8. Kismat Se Tum from Pukar (2000) – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman, Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam & Anuradha Paudwal

This 2000-release song featuring Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor was lovely filmed on glaciers of Alaska mountains at minus 20 degree temperature and everything related to the song is compliment. It’s one among the best romantic songs sung by Sonu Nigam, and a rare duet with Anuradha Paudwal too, and it was one of the last songs penned by legendary lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri.

9.Tu Jaane Naa from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) – Music Composer:  Pritam, Lyricist:  Irshad Kamil, Playback Singer(s): Atif Aslam

One of the finest songs of the decade, the composer used drums for its recording. The song was filmed on Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. All the songs of the album were extremely popular.

10. O Re Chori from Lagaan (2001) – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman, Lyricist: Javed Akhtar, Playback Singer(s): Udit Narayan, Vasundhara Das & Alka Yagnik

lagaan hits

Music composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar earned many accolades including Filmfare and National film awards. “O Rey Chhori” is the single romantic track of the album and Alka Yagnik won Filmfare award for this song, while Udit Narayan received it for Mitwa song. Lagaan swept all music awards of the year. The song was filmed on Aamir Khan and newcomers – Gracy Singh and Rachel Shelley.

11. Pareshaan from Ishaqzaade (2012) – Music Composer: Amit Trivedi, Lyricist: Kausar Munir, Playback Singer(s): Shalmali Kholgade

Shalmali Kholgade earned Filmfare award for best female playback for this song filmed on Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor. The song was one of the most loved songs of the year, and definitely worth a space in my list of 25 best songs of past two decades.

12. Jag Ghoomeya from Sultan (2016) – Music Composer: Vishal-Shekhar, Lyricist:  Irshad Kamil, Playback Singer(s): Rahet Fateh Ali Khan

Salman is mostly associated with comic and action roles in the recent past. But in Jag Ghoomeya from Sultan, he shows some shades of romance and heart break, and a music lover can never miss this track from this playlist. Though Rahet Fateh Ali Khan was nominated at Filmfare awards in male playback category, he didn’t receive the honour. However the female rendition by Neha Bhasin earned an award at Filmfare. The song was first recorded in Arjit Singh’s voice and later re-recorded in Pakistani singer’s voice, and the move invited a few controversies too. But “Jag Ghoomeya” in Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice is really touching and no one can deny.

13. Mohabbat Ho Na Jaaye from Kasoor (2001) – Music Composer: Nadeem Shravan, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik

This extremely romantic song was filmed on debutante Lisa Ray and Aftab Shivdasani, and it shows how beautiful the whole world is, when love is in the year. Nadeem Shravan remained the most loved music composer duo in the previous decade, who gave emphasis to melody than anything else. It’s unfortunate to music fans, we lost such wonderful talents, when they were delivering some of the finest tunes of the era. Let us hope they bring back melody back to Bollywood very soon.

14. Aashique Banaya Aapne from Aashique Banaya Aapne (2005) – Music Composer: Himesh Reshammiya, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Himesh Reshammiya & Shreya Ghoshal

This sizzling romantic number made the music director overnight sensation, who was till then best identified as a composer only. His album ‘Tera Suroor’ which got released almost at the same time also received warm response. Bollywood’s hottest song ever was pictured on Emraan Hashmi and debutante Tanushree Dutta. Perhaps it’s the most sensuous and sizzling song ever filmed in Bollywood, and Emraan definitely lifted the romantic song to a new level through his trademark style for which he is popular most.

Himesh Reshammiya bagged Filmfare award for best male playback singer for its duet version, a very rare feat achieved by any music composer at award nights. In fact the movie marked Himesh’s debut as a playback singer, and since then he sang numerous chartbuster songs for Emraan, both soft and remixed versions. Its remixed version was sung by composer himself. That version too was equally popular.

15. Bol Na Halke from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007) – Music Composer: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Lyricist: Gulzar, Playback Singer(s): Rahet Fateh Ali Khan & Mahalakshmi Iyer

The movie was a huge flop. But all the songs were chartbusters, especially this extremely popular romantic track filmed on Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan. This particular helped Rahet Fateh Ali Khan to establish in Hindi film industry. Yet Iyer was not much benefited with the success of this song. But definitely it’s her career best song in Bollywood.

16. Agar Tum Mil Jao from Zeher (2005) – Music Composer: Anu Malik, Lyricist: Sayeed Quadri, Playback Singer(s): Shreya Ghoshal/Udit Narayan

zeher songs

The song had two solo versions recorded in Shreya and Udit Narayan’s voices, and female version filmed on Emraan Hashmi, Shamita Shetty and Udita Goswami was most popular. Anu Malik composed this extremely popular song which is actually a copied version of Agar Tum Mil Jao Zamana Chod of Pakistani film, Imandar released in 1974 and sung by Tasawar Khanum. Its lines too – is a direct lift with a few modifications done by Sayeed Quadri and Shakeel Azmi.

17. Tum Se Hi from Jab We Met (2007) – Music Composer: Pritam, Lyricist: Irshad Kamil, Playback Singer(s): Mohit Chauhan

The song filmed on Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor is one among my personal favourites. All the tunes of the movie were fresh and new, and extraordinary too. You can’t find at least a single weak track in the album. Yeh Ish Haye song earned best playback singer award for Shreya at National awards and Filmfare awards. Yet the soft and soothing ‘Tum Se Hi’ is my personal favourite.

18. Suraj Hua Maddham from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001) – Music Composer: Jatin Lalit, Lyricist: Anil Pandey, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik

The movie was one of the early experiments of assembling three or more music composers for a single album with good budget and A-list actors and crew, and this procedure is still trending in Bollywood. One such early experiments was ‘Fiza’ released one year earlier where A. R. Rahman became a guest composer for one of the tracks. During struggling years, Sandesh Shandilya and Himesh Reshammiya have also composed tracks in the late 1990s.

K3G had three composers – Jatin Lalit and Sandesh Shandilya composed 5 songs each and Aadesh Shrivastava who was a guest composer, composed a single song. In those 5 tracks, Sandesh Shandilya used the voices of Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik to record three duets – Suraj Hua Maddham, You Are My Soniya and Deewana Hai Dekho, and all of them were extremely popular. The album was also nominated at Filmfare awards for best music. Suraj Hua Maddham was the first romantic song filmed on the adorable screen Jodi of 1990s – SRK & Kajol, after her marriage with Devgan.

19. Mere Humsafar from Refugee (2000) – Music Composer: Anu Malik, Lyricist: Javed Akhtar, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik

Millennium marked the screen debut of a bunch of actors who went on establish their respective careers – Hrithik & Ameesha through Kaho Na Pyar Hai and Abhishek Bachchan & Kareena Kapoor through Refugee need special mention. Though the movie was not a commercial hit, songs became extremely popular and Anu Malik went on to win his single National film award for best music composer. After that he remained at his career peek till mid-2000s after which his career deteriorated. Sadly Bollywood’s soft melodies faced a slow death after that. Yes, we can’t enjoy Bollywood songs now, how we did one decade back.

Mukda of Mere Humsafar is loosely inspired from Main Tumhari Ragini Tum Geet Ho from Roop Sundari composed by his father Sardar Malik, who also remained a successful composer in the Bollywood yesterdays. It was a Lata Mangeshkar solo. Refugee was one of the early chartbuster works of Sonu Nigam-Alka Yagnik combo. Later they recorded many hit songs together.

20. Tum Dil Ki Dhadkan from Dhadkan (2000) – Music Composer: Nadeem Shravan, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Abhijeet Bhatacharya & Alka Yagnik

Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai or Tum Dil Ki Dhadkan from Dhadkan – which one is your top choice? It was a hard decision for me to choose one among the two. Yet as I wanted to conclude the list with 25 best songs, I decided to choose a single song from each album. Otherwise more than one song from Saathiya and Aashique 2 might have been featured in my list. This particular song was filmed on Suniel Shetty and Shilpa Shetty.

21. Mere Naam Tu from Zero (2018) – Music Composer: Ajay-Atul, Lyricist: Irshad Kamil, Playback Singer(s): Abhay Jodhpurkar

It’s after a long time, a romantic song of SRK touched listeners’ hearts and his fans loved this romantic avatar. The song was lovely and colorfully filmed just like a Holi song. Anushka is wonderful, SRK is magic with his lovely dance steps and so are its artists associated with it. I could found some shades of melodious ‘Sapna Jahan‘ song of Brothers of the same composer duo, which itself lifted a segment of ‘Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai‘ of 1996 film, Khamoshi: The Musical. I also got glimpses of SPB’s voice in Abhay Jodhpurkar and 1980s/1990s Tamil tunes of Illayaraja somewhere, which made me listen this song over and over without any break.

22. Kasam Ki Kasam from Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003) – Music Composer: Anu Malik, Lyricist: Dev Kohli, Playback Singer(s): Shaan & K. S. Chithra

chithra anu malik songs

Anu Malik composed a string of songs for Kareena Kapoor right from her debut flick, Refugee. This soft song filmed on Kareena, Hrithik & Abhishek is definitely one of the finest tracks of the decade, and its lyrics penned by Dev Kohli lifted the song to a new level.

23. Title track of Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya (2000) – Music Composer: Ismail Darbar, Lyricist: Sameer, Playback Singer(s): Sonu Nigam & K. S. Chithra

Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya was one of the early hits of Sonu Nigam’s career which cemented his position as the new lead singer of Bollywood. Songs of Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya have always found a place in my playlist for many years, and it’s true, charm of true melodies will never be lost. The song was filmed on Keerthi Reddy and Abhishek Bachchan who marked their Bollyood screen debut in year 2000.

24. Pashmeera from Fitoor (2016) – Music Composer: Amit Trivedi, Lyricist:  Swanand Kirkire , Playback Singer(s): Amit Trivedi

I think it’s one of the underrated works of Amit Trivedi. Tunes are so fresh and melodious, and after listening to this album, my expectations about the composer have only increased. His voice is too good for playback singing too. One of the top romantic tracks of the year, the original song featured artists who played childhood roles of Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapoor. I have never watched this video online. A promotional video starring the leading stars was released, which is available in Youtube.

25.Teri Mitti from Kesari  (2019) – Music Composer: Arko, Lyricist: Manoj Muntashir, Playback Singer(s): B Praak

I don’t know why tears roll down my eyes whenever I listened to this song soon after Covid epidemic hit our nation. Am I a patriotic? Yes, definitely yes. That’s why I can’t exclude this patriotic song dedicated to soldiers from my list. Goosebumps for such a lovely piece of music, heart touching rendition as well as wonderful lyrics, which is not common in Bollywood nowadays. The song gives glimpses of the last few moments of a soldier’s life, his dreams and memories, and the situation is very much related to the tragic climax of a real life incident, when Sikhs fought Battle of Saragarhi against British to save their honours. I think “Teri Mitti” is the best patriotic song happened after “Sandeshe Aate Hain”.

When the song was not given honours at Filmfare awards which it deserved, netizens for the first time openly came up with criticisms. Perhaps it’s for the first time in the history of decades’ old Filmfare awards, when Bollywood fans advocated for a particular song and it worth applauses. A version dedicated to doctors who served nation during epidemic released in April 2020 went viral. A true salute to all the warriors who fight for our nation, and here I end my collection of 25 best songs.
