Aryaman Birla – Young cricketer from Birla Industrial family

Aryaman Birla is a young cricketer batsman from Mumbai associated with first class cricket. He is a member of the famous Birla business family and a 6th generation family member. His father Kumar Mangalam Birla serves as the Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, the third-largest private sector conglomerate in India. His sister Ananya Birla is a singer and song writer associated with independent music of pop and Electropop genres of western music since 2016. Most of his family members spanning to 6 generations are industrialists and philanthropists.

Aryaman Birla was born into an industrialist family in Mumbai in 1997. Quite different from family tradition of business, he chose cricket. He started playing first class cricket for Maharashtra domestic team. He played his first match on 25 November 2017, as a part of 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. He scored 16 and 6 in his first two FC innings, in a match against Odisha and scored his first half-century 51 against Tamil Nadu in the match. He scored his maiden century in FC cricket in November 2018 in his third match.

In 2018 he became a team member of Rajasthan Royals for 2018 IPL season. He scored a double hundred and took 10 wickets in U-13 match of MP with Chattisgarh, which helped him to grab a spot at IPL auditions. In CK Naidu trophy, he took 795 runs in 6 matches at an average of 79.5.

1. His paternal grandfather Aditya Vikram Birla and paternal great-grandfather Basant Kumar Birla were industrialists, and paternal grandmother Padmabhushan Rajashree Birla was a philanthropist. His paternal great-grandmother Sarla Birla was a businesswoman. 

2. Through his paternal great-grandmother Sarla Birla, he is linked to Brajlal Biyani, independent activist. Sarla Birla was the daughter of Brajlal Biyani.

3. Ghanshyam Das Birla, Rameswar Das Birla, Baldeo Das Birla, Krishna Kumar Birla, Ganga Prasad Birla, Chandrakant Birla and Yasovardhan Birla are some other prominent figures of Birla family belonging to different generations. Most of them were associated with business and well-known industrialists.

4. He doesn’t want to follow his father’s centuries-old business legacy. Instead he wants to make a mark of his own. Interestingly his sister Ananya Birla also chose musical field. He has two sisters. In fact he moved to a small town Rewa leaving behind all his luxuries to pursue a career in cricket.

5. He scored his maiden hundred 103 off 189 balls at Eden gardens in Ranji Trophy at the age of 21. He scored this century for Madhya Pradesh against Bengal in 2018.

6. He loves tatoos and has one tattoo with letters in his left arm.

7. He is a left-handed batsman and bowls as slow left-arm orthodox.

8. Though born as the son of a multi-millionaire has always opted for a simple life style leaving behind all luxuries. He prefers non-AC compartment in trains for travelling, stays only in small resorts during his tours and practises at high temperature even at 48 degrees, to reach his goal.  

9. His great-grandfather Basant Kumar Birla passed away in 2019 aged 98.

10. Seth Shobharam, grandson of Seth Bhudharmal, who lived in the early 19th century, was the first one from Birla family who got into trade and business. He was a local trader. It was his son, Seth Shiv Narayana in the second half of 19th century who ventured business outside their hometown Pilani, now a part of Rajasthan. Birla industrial family flourished since then.

11. Shobhana Bhartia (daughter of Krishna Kumar Birla) is perhaps the most prominent female member of Birla family (Rajashree Birla and Sarla Birla being daughter-in-laws). She is the Chairperson and Editorial Director of the Hindustan Times Group, inherited from her father.
