A few health and nutritious facts of Apricot to know

Apricot is a golden orange fruit highly rich in nutrition. Greek people called it ‘Golden eggs of Sun God’. The fruit is around 4-5 centi meter in diameter. Like nutmeg and avocado, apricot has a big seed at its centre. In English this seed is called ‘Stone’. Fresh apricot is sweet in taste. Usually it is dried under direct sun and used for different purposes.

1. 100 gm apricot has just 50 calories. It contains fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals etc.

2. It contains phytochemicals in plenty, which can resist heart diseases and cancer.

3. Vitamin A content of apricot is good for eye health and improves vision. It can resist Macular degeneration in old people, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD).

4. Fresh apricot contains Vitamin C in plenty, which helps in defence mechanism. Potassium, zinc, iron, calcium and manganese are also present in apricot.

5. Golden-orange coloured apricots are simply the best.

6. Fresh apricot is washed first, dried and then eaten along with its skin.

7. Chopped apricot is used for salads.

8. Apricot is used for the preparation of jams, jellies, syrups and marmalade.

9. Dried apricot can be slightly cooked and can be added to fruit salads and cakes.
