Raasaathi Unna Kaannadha Nenju from Vaidehi Kathirunthal (Tamil) – Lyrics in English with translation

Raasaathi unna kaannadha nenju

Kaathaadi polaadudhu(2)

Dear girl, without seeing you

My heart flutters like kite

Raasaathi unna kaannadha nenju

Kaathaadi polaadudhu(2)

Dear girl, without seeing you

My heart flutters like kite

Pozhudhaagi pochu

Velakethiyaachu

Ponmaanae onna theduthu

Has turned dark,

Has lighted lamp

Golden deer,

I am searching you

Raasaathi unna kaannadha nenju

Kaathaadi polaadudhu

Dear girl, without seeing you

My heart flutters like kite

Kannukkoru vannakili

Kaadhukkoru gaanakkuyil

Nenjukkoru vanjikkodi needhaanamma

A colourful bird (wild flower) for eyes

A singing cuckoo for ears

A spreading forest vine for heart

It’s only you.

Kannukkoru vannakili

Kaadhukkoru gaanakkuyil

Nenjukkoru vanjikkodi needhaanamma

A colourful bird(wild flower) for eyes

A singing cuckoo for ears

A spreading forest vine for heart

It’s only you.

Thathi thavalum thangha chimizhae

Ponghi perghum Sangha Tamizhae

You are the slippery shining golden box

You are the ever-growing classic Tamil (of Sangha age)

Mutham thara nitham varum natchathiram

You are the star that comes to kiss me daily.

Yaarodu inghu ennakenna pechu

Nee thaanae kannae naan vanghum moochu

What kind of talk to others (no need to talk),

When you are dear…my life breath

Vazhnthaaga vendum vaa vaa kannae

Please come back,

I want to live again.

Raasaathi unna kaannadha nenju

Kaathaadi polaadudhu

Dear girl, without seeing you

My heart flutters like kite

Pozhudhaagi pochu

Velakethiyaachu

Ponmaanae onna theduthu

Has turned dark,

Has lighted lamp

Golden deer,

I am searching you

Mangai oru Gangai ena

Mannan oru Kannan ena

Kaadhil oru kaadhal kadhai

Sonnaal enna

Woman as Ganga,

& Man as Kannan,

My dear love,

Tell me a love story in my ears.

Mangai oru Gangai ena

Mannan oru Kannan ena

Kaadhil oru kaadhal kadhai

Sonnaal enna

Woman as Ganga,

& Man as Kannan,

My dear love,

Tell me a love story in my ears.

Athai magano… maaman magaloo

Son of aunt or daughter of uncle

Sondham edhuvoo… bandham edhuvoo

Though we were not related,

To each other anyway,

Sandhithathum sindhithadhum thithithida

As soon as I saw u first,

Felt connection between us,

Felt we were soulmates

Ammaadi needhaan illaadha naanum

Venmegam vandhu neendhaadha vaanam

Dear, the day I am without you,

It’s like clear sky, without white clouds coming to swim

Thangaadha ekkam podhum podhum

I can’t bear it more,

It’s enough…. enough

Raasaathi unna kaannadha nenju

Kaathaadi polaadudhu

Dear girl, without seeing you

My heart flutters like kite

Pozhudhaagi pochu

Velakethiyaachu

Ponmaanae onna theduthu

Has turned dark,

Has lighted lamp

Golden deer,

I am searching you

Raasaathi unna kaannadha nenju

Kaathaadi polaadudhu

Kaathaadi polaadudhu

Dear girl, without seeing you

My heart flutters like kite…

Flutters like kite.

*Song situation

A prank can cost someone’s life too. Hero never expresses his love, while she does, & he always keep telling her, he has no feelings for her. It’s simply a joke he plays on her. He decides to give a big surprise, buys wedding jewels & plays final prank telling her, he is engaged. Heartbroken, she eats poison & dies in his arms. He turns lunatic, leaves village, lives isolated life, sings when remembers her ad keeps her anklet as memory.

There is an interesting incident, connecting this song, which looks unbelievable. When the movie was played at a theatre in Cumbum, the song attracted wild elephants, which used to come to the premises to listen, & leave the place once the song is over! Ya, the song is pure magic. It always find place in my list of top 10 Illayaraja hits.
