Salman Khan – Top 100 chartbuster Bollywood songs of his career

Last year I wrote a special article on 100 of the best songs of Shah Rukh Khan and published as his birthday gift. You can read the post here. This year I would like to do the same with yet another Khan of Bollywood – Salman Khan, who is celebrating his 53th birthday on the last week of December. Bollywood without Khan-dan is just like Diwali without any sound or crackers, nothing else with which the trio can be compared. Close to three decades, the trio has fully dominated world’s one of the biggest film industries – Bollywood, and it’s sure they will continue the reign for at least one more decade from here on. They are equally liked by people of all age groups, and the reason behind is – they were able to maintain the chemistry with audience, strike the right cord and provide them with entertainment in all means.

A brief note on Salman’s Bollywood songs

As a lead actor, Salman’s first film Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) had some of the finest songs of the decade. Definitely Bollywood was going through its worst times in terms of good films as well as good music, and Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) brought that monsoon to Bollywood after a long-time drought. To add, Aamir Khan’s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) was its predecessor and both these films brought back romantic musical era back to Bollywood. That’s where Bollywood stays still now even after three decades, and a big thanks to both these films and its music for their contributions to the same.

Coming to details, with the debut film in a lead role, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam’s voice got permanently added to Salman Khan’s name during his initial days in Bollywood cinema till mid-1990s, before music directors experimented with the voices of Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Kamaal Khan, Sonu Nigam etc. Yes, SPB – Salman combo has contributed to some sweet melodies of 1990s. Kamaal Khan’s voice is widely regarded synchronous to Salman Khan and they together have given some amazing songs. Now voices of younger generations are linked with Salman’s profile, and Salman too has showcased his talent as a singer in the recent past, ‘Mein Tera Hero’ being one among the best instances.

Among music composers, compositions of Raamlaxman, Anand-Milind and Nadeem-Shravan were frequently used during the initial phase of Salman’s career with melody at its high notch. In the late 1990s, Himesh Reshammiya marked his career debut composing a single for Salman Khan’s Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya in 1998 and in the past two decades, the composer has got opportunity to work with the actor for a handful of Bollywood hits. Read some of their best combination songs. Himesh reserved some amazing and melodious compositions for his favourite actor as well. Sajid-Wajid duo also worked with Salman Khan for a range of films over the years giving many chartbuster hits.

So, which songs can make into the final list of best Salman Khan tracks in the past three decades? What I feel is – the era of 1990s and early 2000s are simply the best, when loud music was not a criterion to win the heart of music lovers. In the recent times, I don’t pay much attention to present day music, and what Bollywood lack is pure melody. So when I picked the best, I excluded his several peppy numbers which received huge popularity over net since early 2010s. I gave preference to soft songs, yet tried to pick at least one track from most of his noticed films. Excuses… if your favourite song couldn’t make into my final list of top 100. Yet I am sure, you can find many of your personal favourites in the second list right at the bottom, and here we go.

1. Kabutar Ja Ja from Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)

Lyrics – Dev Kohli, Music – Raamlaxman, Playback Singers – S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Lata Mangeshkar

As told above, Maine Pyar Kiya was the biggest hit of the year, and so were its songs too. It was the best-selling album of 1980s, which sold over 10 million units. The film was a perfect launch pad for both Salman Khan and Bhagyashree Patwardhan. Though the lead actress faded away too soon, Salman established as a leading romantic hero very soon. The song featuring the lead pair also had a dove as a third character.

2. Mere Rang Mein from Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)

Lyrics – Dev Kohli, Music – Raamlaxman, Playback Singers – S. P. Balasubrahmanyam

When the song was released in the late 1980s, it was considered as a bold or sizzling track. The song featured Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in an extremely romantic mood, and the song was a big hit too. The song was inspired from “The Final Countdown” by the Swedish band Europe.

6. Dekha Hai Pehla Baar from Saajan (1991)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Nadeem-Shravan, Playback Singers – SP Balasubramanyam, Alka Yagnik

During my school days, I was influenced a lot by the songs of Saajan, particularly this track. Saajan was the top album of the year, and this duet featuring Madhuri Dixit and Salman khan was USP of the movie.

7. Tum Se Milne Ki Tamanna Hain from Saajan (1991)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Nadeem-Shravan, Playback Singers – SP Balasubramanyam

The movie had some wonderful tunes sung by Kumar Sanu, SPB, Alka Yagnik, Pankaj Udhas and Anuradha Paudwal. While Kumar Sanu’s voice was used for Sanjay Dutt, SPB became the ghost voice of Salman, and he gave naughtiness for its renditions to relate the flirting character of Salman in the movie.

8. Jiye To Jiye Kaise from Saajan (1991)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Nadeem-Shravan, Playback Singers – SP Balasubramanyam, Pankaj Udhas, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal

10. Kabhi Tu Chhalia Lagta Hai from Patthar Ke Phool (1991)

Lyrics – Ravinder Rawal, Music – Raamlaxman, Playback Singers – Lata Mangeshkar, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam

As told above Raveena Tandon also made a successful screen debut pairing opposite Salman Khan, through this action film. Read more about 33 actresses who marked their debut with a Khan movie.

11. Saathiya Tune Kya Kia from Love (1991)

Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, Music – Ilaiyaraaja/Anand-Milind, Playback Singers – S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, K.S. Chitra

14. Dekho Dekho Tum from Nischay (1992)

Lyrics – Qamar Jalalabadi, Music – O.P. Nayyar, Playback Singers – Amit Kumar, Kavita Krishnamurthy

One among the last works of the legendary composer, Nayyar worked with great Qamar Jalalabadi with whom he has associated with multiple times during the golden era of Hindi music. Karishma Kapoor shared screen space with Khan for this song.

15. Hawa Mein Kya Hai from Jaagruti (1992)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Anand-Milind, Playback Singers – S.P. Balasubramaniam, K. S. Chithra

It was for the first time Karishma Kapoor worked with Khan. The movie is long forgotten, but it is very easy to recollect this romantic song from memory. Nischay starring both actors was released a couple of weeks later. Both the movies were released in July 1992.

16. Tere Hi Aarzoo Hai from Chandramukhi (1993)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Anand-Milind, Playback Singers – Kavita Krishnamurthy, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam

Lyrics – Dev Kohli, Music – Raamlaxman, Playback Singers – S. P. Balasubrahmanyam

A film with more than 15 songs (quite uncommon in present-day Indian cinema), it’s not easy to pick 3 or 4 best songs, particularly when the album doesn’t include at least one weak track. I have picked 4 of them where Salman Khan has sync-lipped in the song picturization. That’s why I excluded “Maye Ni Maye“. Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hai is definitely the top romantic track of the album, and audience still can’t forget the screen chemistry of Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in this lovely filmed song.

21. Deedi Tera Dewar from Hum Aapke Hai Koun (1994)

Lyrics – Dev Kohli, Music – Raamlaxman, Playback Singers – Lata Mangeshkar, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam

69. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi from Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004)

Lyrics – Jalees Sherwani, Music – Sajid-Wajid, Playback Singers – Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan

The film title was originally coined for year 2000 David Dhawan film, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, which also starred Salman Khan in a lead role. Both the films included a song – Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and both songs were loved by music fans.

70. Bindiya Chamakne Lagi from Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha (2004)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik

It was for the first time A. R. Rahman composed a song for Salman Khan films. Yet my top pick is Himesh Reshammiya number featuring Khan and Bhumika Chawla. Though the film couldn’t revive the success of Tere Naam, this song definitely did. The tracks of the album Tere Naam was also composed by Himesh Reshammiya.

71. Chori Chori from Lucky: No Time for Love (2005)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Adnan Sami, Playback Singers – Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam

Adnam Sami turned a music composer with this movie. Though the film flopped, the songs got noticed. Salman Khan launched 16-year old Sneha Ullal through this movie.

72. Sun Zara from Lucky: No Time for Love (2005)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Adnan Sami, Playback Singers – Sonu Nigam

Sau Dard Hai, Sun Zara, Pardesi – all these heart breaking songs of Salman Khan exclusively belongs to Sonu Nigam, who has sung comparatively less number of songs for the actor.

73. Laga Laga Laga Re from Meine Pyar Kyon Kiya (2005)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Alka Yagnik, Kamaal Khan

Sushmita Sen looks extremely beautiful and hot in the deep orange sari, and also brings back some reminiscences of her previous hit, Mein Hoon Naa aside SRK. Definitely Salman and Sushmita make a great pair on screen, they worked together in three movies as a pair (apart from Sirf Tum, where they were not opposite) with a good success rate. Tumko Bhula Na Paayenge was not a commercial success, while the rest two were hits.

74. Just Chill from Meine Pyar Kyon Kiya (2005)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Sonu Nigam, Jayesh Gandhi, Amrita Kak

The dance number featured the siblings – Sohail Khan and Salman Khan, and also Katrina Kaif, with whom Salman was dating then.

75. Kyon Ki Itna Pyar from Kyon Ki (2005)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik

There were speculations that Kyon Ki was a breakup story of Ash and Salman. But it was a remake of Malayalam movie, Thalavattam, which failed to replicate the success of original. After pairing with Karishma Kapoor for a series of movies, Kyon Ki was his first film with her younger sister. Kareena and Salman made a great pair on screen, but was not enough.

76. Dil Ke Badle Sanam from Kyon Ki (2005)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik

This romantic song also featured Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor and it’s extremely pleasing to watch them together on screen. Later they worked together in three more movies as a pair. Their next film – Main Aurr Mrs Khanna flopped at box office, while the duo delivered two blockbusters – Bodyguard and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

77. Sau Dard Hai from Jaan-E-Mann (2006)

Lyrics – Gulzar, Music – Anu Malik, Playback Singers – Sonu Nigam, Suzanne D’Mello

This heart breaking song is definitely one of the career best songs of Sonu Nigam. Back vocals were provided by Suzanne D’Mello. The song also featured Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta.

78. Hum Ko Malum Hai from Jaan-E-Mann (2006)

Lyrics – Gulzar, Music – Anu Malik, Playback Singers – Sonu Nigam, Sadhana Sargam

The film also included this beautiful song filmed on stage by Preity Zinta and Salman Khan, and was a huge hit too. However the film flopped.

79. Tenu Leke from Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love (2006)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Playback Singers – Sonu Nigam, Mahalakshmi Iyer

This multi-star cast film had Salman paired with Priyanka Chopra, with whom he delivered a blockbuster – Mujhse Shaadi Karoge. Salman woos his heroine through this dance number.

80. Soni De Nakhre from Partner (2007)

Lyrics – Jalees Sherwani, Sanjay Chhel, Shabbir Ahmed, Music – Sajid-Wajid, Playback Singers – Labh Janjua, Sneha Pant, Wajid

The romantic comedy included some fast and catchy songs, and Soni De Nakhre was one such, featuring Katrina Kaif, Govinda and Salman Khan. Do You Wanna Partner and You’re My Love are other popular tracks from the movie.

81. Tu Hi Toh Meri Dost Hain from Yuvraaj (2008)

Lyrics – Gulzar, Music – A. R. Rahman, Playback Singers – Benny Dayal, Shreya Ghoshal, A. R. Rahman

A lovely song on friendship featuring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, it’s the only fully length album composed by music maestro A. R. Rahman for Salman Khan. My personal favourite is – Tu Muskura, best considered as an Anil Kapoor song, though Salman appears in the song in parts.

82. Surili Akhiyon Wale from Veer (2010)

Lyrics – Gulzar, Music – Sajid-Wajid, Playback Singers – Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Suzanne D’Mello

The film flopped at box office, but still remembered for this wonderful song rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahet later sang the top song of year 2016 for Salman – Jag Ghoomeya.

83. Title Track from Debangg (2010)

Lyrics – Jalees Sherwani, Music – Sajid-Wajid and Lalit Pandit, Playback Singers – Sukhwinder Singh, Wajid

I can’t say it’s a lovely track. But when Salman’s songs are listed, this song is definitely counted.

84. Tere Mast Mast Do Nain from Debangg (2010)

Lyrics – Faiz Anwar, Music – Sajid-Wajid and Lalit Pandit, Playback Singers – Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

The movie included a couple of romantic songs, and rendition by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan makes this song so special. The movie was a perfect launch pad for Sonali Sinha, who played Salman’s wife.

85. Chori Kiya Re Jiya from Debangg (2010)

Lyrics – Jalees Sherwani, Music – Sajid-Wajid and Lalit Pandit, Playback Singers – Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal

Chori Kiya Re Jiya is my personal favourite one, as melodies touch my soul most. The song was filmed beautifully on Sonakshi Sinha and Salman Khan.

86. Dhinka Chika from Ready (2011)

Lyrics – Ashish Pandit, Music – Devi Sri Prasad, Playback Singers – Mika Singh, Amrita Kak

The item song “Ringa Ringa” from the Telugu movie Arya 2 was reused for this movie featuring Salman Khan and Asin, and the song and its dance steps went on to become immensely popular.

87. Teri Meri Prem Kahani from Bodyguard (2011)

Lyrics – Shabbir Ahmed, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shreya Ghoshal

The top song of the year which bagged numerous awards and nominations at various award functions was originally inspired from traditional Romanian carol “La Vifleem Colo-n Jos“, though Himesh later added his own contributions to make it desi which appealed millions of Indian music lovers. The song stayed at position: 1 on The Official Asian Download Chart show on BBC Asian Network for long 19 weeks, and became one of the rarest songs to be featured in the list for more than 30 weeks. The song featuring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor was favourite ringtone of many when it got released.

88. Saiyaara from Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

Lyrics – Kausar Munir, Music – Sohail Sen, Playback Singers – Mohit Chauhan & Tarannum Mallik

All the songs were huge hits at YouTube, though can’t be counted as memorable tunes now. This romantic track featured Katrina Kaif aside Khan.

89. Tere Naina Maar Hi Daalenge from Jai Ho (2014)

Lyrics – Sameer, Music – Sajid-Wajid, Playback Singers – Shreya Ghoshal, Shaan

Definitely this romantic track featuring Salman Khan and Daisy Shah is lovely, and was well appreciated when got released.

90. Jumme Ki Raat from Kick (2014)

Lyrics – Kumaar, Shabbir Ahmed, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Mika Singh, Palak Muchhal

Mika has sung only less number of songs for Bollywood, and definitely this song tops all musical charts.

91. Hangover from Kick (2014)

Lyrics – Kumaar, Music – Meet Bros. Anjjan, Playback Singers – Salman Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Meet Bros. Anjjan

The song featuring Salman Khan and Jackline was one of the biggest chartbusters of the year, and Salman too succeeded as a playback singer.

92. Tu Jo Mila from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

Lyrics – Kausar Munir, Music – Pritam, Playback Singers – KK

The song emotionally connects with the people, and that’s why it turned such a huge hit.

93. Selfie Le Le from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

Lyrics – Mayur Puri, Music – Pritam, Playback Singers – Vishal Dadlani & Rap by Badshah

Definitely this song is not among Salman’s career best songs, yet relevant in the present generation of selfies.

94. Main Hoon Hero Tera from Hero (2015)

Lyrics – Kumaar, Music – Amaal Mallik, Playback Singers – Salman Khan

Salman Khan surprised everyone with this finest track, and we – music lovers too loved Salman’s voice. Salman produced this movie, which launched star kids – Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty in a lead role.

95. Title Track from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)

Lyrics – Irshad Kamil, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Palak Muchhal

The film received mixed reviews from critics. However songs played an important role in the success of this movie. Sonam Kapoor danced lovely in this title track.

96. Jalte Diye from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)

Lyrics – Irshad Kamil, Music – Himesh Reshammiya, Playback Singers – Anweshaa, Harshdeep Kaur, Vinit Singh, Shabab Sabri

Anweshaa and Vinit Singh are among the best finds of reality shows on Indian television. Unfortunately both these talented singers get only rare opportunities to sing for Bollywood. Thanks to Himesh Reshammiya who acted as their mentor and promoted their talents as well. Lovely pictured in a lavender background, Sonam Kapoor looks gorgeous in a lavender sari in this song, and her onscreen chemistry with Khan sets screen to fire.

97. Jag Ghoomeya from Sultan (2016)

Lyrics – Irshad Kamil, Music – Vishal-Shekhar, Playback Singers – Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

The top song of year 2016, Salman also excelled in his expressions as a lover in this song, and no words can be found to fully express the beauty of this song. It has been years since we have watched Salman Khan on screen as a serious lover, and how he expresses his love towards Anushka Sharma touches our soul. The song had three versions including a cover version sung by Salman, but Rahet’s version is my personal favourite.

98. Radio from Tubelight (2017)

Lyrics – Amitabh Bhattacharya, Music – Pritam, Playback Singers – Kamaal Khan, Amit Mishra

The film fell short in expectations and box office collections, but this Radio song was loved by everyone.

99. Dil Diyan Gallan from Tiger Zinda Hai (2017)

Lyrics – Irshad Kamil, Music – Vishal-Shekhar, Playback Singers – Atif Aslam

The song featuring Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan went viral over net. Salman is seen in a romantic mood throughout the song, who tries to impress his wife through his words and deeds.

100. Heeriye from Race 3 (2018)

Lyrics – Kumaar, Music – Meet Bros, Playback Singers – Deep Money, Neha Bhasin, Kamaal Khan

The song is one of the best watched Indian songs ever, though it can’t claim to be magical or wonderful. The song has already crossed 135 million views within a few months of release. The song featured Jacqueline Fernandez who has earlier worked with Salman Khan in Kick.
