Vidyullekha Raman – South Indian Female Comedian

Vidyullekha Raman is a south Indian film and theater actress, best known for comic roles. She appears in Tamil and Telugu films. She is the daughter of well-known character artist Mohan Raman. Vidyullekha is associated with film scene since 2012 and made her onscreen debut with Neethaane En Ponvasantham/Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu, the bilingual movie directed by Gautham Menon. She received a nomination for -Vijay Award for Best Supporting Actress for her debut role.

She was born in 1991 in Chennai into a family of artists. She is the granddaughter of prominent lawyer V. P. Raman. She is the niece of well-known advocate general P. S. Raman. She developed an interest for theatre and acting during her academic years. Her cousin Gitanjali, who is a theater artist, also influenced her a lot. After graduating in Visual Communication, she worked with different theatre groups for 7 years before foraying into films. Rumpelstiltskin (2008) was one of her popular theater works.

Jilla, Veeram, Malini 22 Palayamkottai and Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru are some of her noted works in Tamil, while she did memorable roles in Ramayya Vasthavayya, Bhaagamathie, Something Something, Toli Prema, Run Raja Run and Malini 22 Vijayawada in Telugu. She got Edison Award for Best Comedian Female for 2014 film, Veeram and Nandi Award for Best Female Comedian for Run Raja Run the same year.

Vidyullekha Raman – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. Her cousin Gitanjali is married to Tamil film director Selvaraghavan.

2. She is trained in Bharatnatyam and Hip Hop, apart from classic music which she learnt from her grandmother Kalpagam Raman. She also learnt Jazz.

3. She worked as a backstage artist and costume designer for 2010 play, ‘Swami and friends’.
