Chakka Thoran (Jackfruit Thoran)

Chakka Thoran is definitely a traditional dish of Kerala. In fact almost all dishes made using ripen or unripen jackfruit forms an integral relationship with Kerala culture and cuisine, and chakka thoran is most popular among all. Yet another variant of chakka thoran is chakka avial. Both are very healthy and tasty dishes also. Chakka Pradhaman is most popular among the desserts made using ripen jackfruit. Chakka Thoran

 

Ingredients for Chakka Thoran:

 

1. Unripen Jackfruit (Pacha Chakka) – 1 small sized

2. Salt and turmeric – As required

3. Garlic – 6 cloves

    Red chillies – 6

    Coconut scrapped – 1

    Pepper – 1 small spoon

    Ginger – One small piece

    Shallots chopped – 2 big spoons

    Green chillies – 2

    Cumin seeds – 1 small spoon

4. Coconut oil – 3 big spoons

5. Mustard – 1 small spoon

    Red chillies – 4

    Curry leaves – 2 stalks

6. Salt – as needed

 

How to prepare Chakka Thoran (Jackfruit Thoran)?

 

1. Clean jackfruit and separate flesh and seeds.

2. Chop jackfruit fresh for thoran.

3. Cut jack seeds into 4 pieces lengthwise and cook it in a pressure cooker adding sufficient water, salt and turmeric powder.

4. When it’s cooked, add chopped jackfruit flesh and cook again.

5. Mix ingredients no: 3 and crush it similar to all thorans (should not be grinded).

6. Heat coconut oil in a pan, and sauté ingredients no: 5.

7. Add the crushed coconut mixture to it, sauté it for a few moments and add the cooked jackfruit to it.

8. Mix everything very well with a spatula and put the flame off. Water content should be absorbed almost completely.
