Kareena Kapoor is a talented actress who stays in Bollywood for a long time. Made her debut in the year 2000 with offbeat film Refugee, very soon she rose to the top A-grade actors list. Though she dreamt to concentrate on to powerful characters before she made her film debut, later she accepted all kind of roles and proved her versatility as a flexible actress. Truly her dedication and hard work is worth appreciation. Her bold attitude has placed her at a top place, where she is right now and she set examples to many youngsters to follow her suit.
Till now in the past 16-17 years or so, she has been choosy about her roles and appeared in around 50 films. She has essayed different types of roles over the years, and among all how to choose best of her 5 performances?
Jab We Met (2007) – Among all her film performances, Geet in Jab We Met owns a special position in Kareena’s career. It’s one of the top lovable female characters portrayed on Bollywood screen ever, and Kareena’s pairing with Shahid Kapoor was well appreciated. The duo was dating during the film shooting, and got separated before the film got released. Shahid, known for his chocolate roles till then was also appreciated for playing the role of a business tycoon.
Kareena earned her single Filmfare award for best actress for the iconic role she played in Jab We Met, and music by Preetam and Sandesh Shandilya also played a major role in the commercial success of the film. Her role was ranked at number 66 in Filmfare magazine’s 80 Iconic Bollywood Performances list.
Chameli (2004) – Initially Kareena was not at all interested in accepting the lead role of a prostitute for the film. Till then Kareena mostly played similar kind of roles, and most of them met with box office failures too. She was on a verge for being labeled ‘typecast’ when Chameli happened to her and the movie proved to be the turning point of her professional life. Her performance received rave reviews from critics and earned her special award at Filmfare. The movie was followed by yet another power pack performance of Kareena through Dev.
Udta Punjab (2016) – This controversial and highly acclaimed film with a social message is the latest release of Kareena Kapoor. Once released the movie also earned good figures at box office. It’s Kareena’s second release in 2016 after Ki & Ka and both the movies were received well by film audience. Till now mostly known for portraying modern and ‘talkative girl’ roles in majority of her flicks, Kareena’s role as Dr. Preet Sahni who runs a drug rehabilitation centre is an exception to all her roles till now. She is playing a calm and silent character in this film, and her screen pairing with Diljit Dosanjh was also well appreciated. The movie was directed by Abhishek Chaubey and starred Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhat in pivot roles. It’s the successful association of Kareena and Shahid after a long break, though the movie lacks their combination scenes.Kareena is currently doing less number of films, and most of them meet with commercial success also.
Omkara (2006) – An adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello, the movie was highly appreciated by critics for the best performances of Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Ajay Devgan. The director Vishal Bhardwaj is known for successfully adapting many of Shakespeare dramas to Bollywood screen, starting one with Maqbool in 2003. She successfully adapted the Shakespeare’s character Desdemona onscreen for which she earned Filmfare Best Actress (Critics) Award.
Dev (2004) – Kareena received the prestigious Best Actress (Critics) award at Filmfare for the portrayal of Aaliya in Dev. The movie also bagged Best movie (Critics) award. Amitabh Bachchan played the lead role of JCP Dev Pratap Singh and Fardeen Khan played Farhaan Ali in the movie directed by Govind Nihalani. Kareena’s role as Aaliya – a transformation from an innocent girl to a powerful character is definitely one of her best screen roles ever.
The movies listed above is purely based on the performance of Kareena as a lead actress, and definitely don’t reflect the box office figures earned them. In terms of performances, movies such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, Aitraaz, Kurbaan and Heroine also needs mentioning. She has also been a part of successful comedies such as Golmaal Series, Hulchul, Chup Chupke, 3 Idiots etc.
She has been a part of several Bollywood blockbusters, where lead hero got most exposure, and she remained a shadow. 3 Idiots, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Bodyguard belong to this category. But among the three movies, she played a notable role in Bodyguard, reprising the role of Nayanthara played in the original Malayalam movie and she got enough space in the movie aside Salman Khan. She has been a part of hit films such as Gabbar Is Back (cameo role) and Singham Returns in the recent times. Similar to Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan she played small roles of hero’s love interest in both these movies.Through a string of success movies in the recent times, she proved that age can never conquer a good artist’s success streak if she determines so nor can it change her approach towards acceptance of roles. All the best Kareena.
