Sophia Paul – Co-producer of Malayalam super hit films, ‘Bangalore Days’ and ‘Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol’

Sophia Paul is a film producer of Malayalam cinema who established film production company, Weekend Blockbusters in 2014. Anjali Menon’s blockbuster Bangalore Days (2014) was the first movie released under this banner, followed by Kaadu Pookkunna Neram, premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival in 2016 and Mohanlal starrer hit film, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol released in 2017. Their fourth production venture, Padayottam (2018) starring Biju Menon was also a commercial hit. Minnal Murali starring Tovino Thomas is their upcoming release.

She got into film industry after she got married into a family associated with movies

Sophia Paul hails from Kavanad in Kollam district, and is currently settled in Dubai. Her father was into marine business and her mother is a housewife. She was only 18, and was a commerce student when she got married. Her father was bedridden those days, and she got married to fulfill her father’s last wish. Thus she joined a family of movie buffs at a very young age. Her brother-in-law owns a production house, and her father-in-law used to run two theatres in Kollam. Her husband James Paul is a businessman.

Filmmaker Anwar Rasheed put forward a suggestion to invest money in filmmaking and that’s house the business family diversified into a new field. Thus the family launched a new production and distribution company, whose maiden venture Bangalore Days became a profitable business. Since then they produced a few hit Malayalam films.

Sophia’s first production venture, ‘Bangalore Days’ was accepted by movie buffs, crossing language barriers

1. She is a graduate in commerce.

2. She is an ardent Mohanlal fans since young, who regularly watched his movies aired on television. Later she became a part of his movie, ‘Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol’. She met him for the first time in the film sets of ‘Laila O Laila’.

3. Soon after marriage, the first movie she watched in theatre was Sukhamo Devi. She burst into tears after seeing Mohanlal’s character dying in the film. It was for the first time her husband knew about her madness of films.

4. Her brother-in-law ‘Pratheeksha’ Peter is into film production and distribution field.

5. After the release of Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, she filed a case against Mohanlal fans for abusing her and her son Kevin Paul on Facebook. Star’s fans accused her of not publicizing the movie.
