Sonu Kakkar – Bollywood playback singer of ‘Babuji Zaara Dheer Chalo’ fame

Sonu Kakkar is a well-known playback singer associated with Bollywood. She shot to instant fame with her debut song, ‘Babuji Zaara Dheer Chalo’ for her debut song from 2003 movie Dum. The song filmed on Yani Gupta was an instant chartbuster. She is the elder sister to popular playback singers – Neha Kakkar and Tony Kakkar, and the trio has collaborated together for several independent songs. Their names are confused with yet another singing female trio of Bollywood because of same surname. Interestingly the trio are siblings and successful singers of Bollywood – Akriti Kakar, Prakriti Kakar and Sukriti Kakar.

Sonu Kakkar was born in Rishikesh. Later the family shifted to Delhi in the early 1990s. She started out singing bhajans with her siblings, at the age of 5. To pursue a career in Bollywood, she shifted to Mumbai. In the early 2000s, she appeared in the singing talent hunt show – Indian Pop Star for Channel V. She was spotted by music composer Sandeep Chowta, who gave her a major break through the item song of Dum. Ishaq Da Takda of Naach, O Sikandar (Desi Mix) of Corporate, Hitchki of Rishi, Bareilly Ke Bazzar Mein of Jail, Yeh Kasoor of Jism 2, Hip Hip Huraah of Mere Dad Ki Maruti etc are a few more notable works in Bollywood.

Sonu Kakkar – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. After the family shifted to Delhi, it faced financial troubles. To help the family the three siblings started singing bhajans and performing at jagratas in and around Delhi.

2. For each performance the siblings used to get rupees 50 in the early 1990s.

3. The music talents of the kids were well supported by parents, which later helped them to become financially independent.

4. Sonu has also rendered her voice for Tamil, Punjabi, Kannada, Marathi, Telugu and Nepali songs.

5. She received MTV Immies Award for best debut voice for Babuji Zaara Dheer Chalo.

6. She sings Sufi songs too. She is also popular with her cover version songs.

7. She participated in pop star VIVA show in the early 2000s, but couldn’t make it.

8. She is a self-taught singer.

9. She has also been associated with jingles as a singer.
