Sameer Phaterpekar – Well-known background music scorer best known for his association with film director Nishikant Kamat

Sameer Phaterpekar is a background music scorer, musician, guitarist and composer who predominantly works in Bollywood. He is best known as a background music scorer, who has done Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi and Tamil films till now, and is a recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Film Awards 2015 in best background scorer category. He joined Bollywood film industry as a music assistant in 1982, and started his independent career as a background music scorer in 2002, after composing a couple of music albums – ‘Khoobsurat’ and ‘Dil le gaya Ajnabi’. Apart from movies, he has also composed BGM for TV series such as CID, Criminal Justice, Adaalat, and most recent – Out of Love in 2019.

Sameer Phaterpekar is a native of Mumbai. He joined film industry as an assistant in 1982, and has worked under Kalyanji-Anandji, R. D. Burman, Rajesh Roshan etc. He also worked as a guitarist for many Bollywood songs in the 1980s and 1990s. Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar (2002) was his debut flick as a BGM scorer. Mumbai Meri Jaan, Force, Parwana, Madaari, Dhuan, Dhrishyam, Girlfriend, Hawas etc are some of his works in Bollywood later. His memorable works in Marathi cinema include – Lai Bhari, Ringa Ringa and Kaay Raav Tumhi.

Sameer Phaterpekar – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. He was the guitarist of the original versions of Bollywood songs like Hawa Hawai of Mr. India, Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai of Khalnayak, Jumma Chumma of Hum and songs of Aashique.

2. He composed the title track, ‘O My Friend Ganesha’ for kid’s movie, My Friend Ganesha.

3. He has been frequently associated with films of Nishikant Kamat, including one National award winning Marathi film.

4. The album ‘Dil le gaya Ajnabi’ released in 2000 and sung by Alka Yagnik and her brother Sameer Yagnik was composed by Sameer Phaterpekar. The album was an instant hit, and its title track and Koi Khwab Mein Roz were extremely popular.

5. He provided a 13-minutes long piece of background music in crime thriller, Drishyam.
