RDX Unplugged – R. D. Burman’s Top 100 Chartbuster Bollywood Hits for You

Rahul Dev Burman or simply R. D. Burman or our own Pancham da – the other name of RDX! Many musicians have come and gone, but the charm and contributions given by R. D to Bollywood music is immensely huge, and can’t be described in one book or two. Rahul was a true genius who composed tunes ahead of his time, brought great reforms to Indian music by blending Indian ragas with westernized tunes and rare musical instruments, and yet retained an Indian flavour in almost all his composed tunes. But he was always blamed by music critics, and throughout his life they never him the true recognition he truly deserved. That may be reason why he received only a few Filmfare awards during his lifetime despite giving magnificent contributions to the field. But his tunes were loved and celebrated by youth since 1970s and till remain the priceless tunes of Bollywood all-time.

It can’t be denied that he had a very low phase during his last 10 years with lesser opportunities, but many of his old tunes grew immensely popular after his death in 1994. Similar to the fate of Madan Mohan, R. D also earned the real recognition and stardom, mostly from younger generations and music critics, after his death. Thanks to those artists who gave due respect to R. D’s tunes and revived them to present before youngsters. Though those remixes can never bring back R. D’s charm or glory, they definitely made a huge impact among music lovers of present times, and frequently used in parties, discos, marriages etc. Many of his tunes have been remixed multiple times, and credit goes its lyricists like Anand Bakshi and Majrooh who wrote some catchy lyrics quite fitting Burman tunes. Also most of the music directors of present times have agreed to the fact that they were deeply influenced by the tunes and beats of R. D. He changed the sound of Hindi film music, entirely changed music arrangements and adopted a new style with many layers of music instruments which many music composers have followed later.

After Shankar-Jaikishen era was almost over in the early 1970s, R. D emerged as the most demanding music director and throughout 1970s, till mid-1980s he remained at the top. He is one of the most celebrated music composers all time, and will always remain so, as long as his tunes will be cherished by music lovers across the world. His tunes for Rajesh Khanna catapulted him to stardom, and Pancham’s association with his wife Asha Bhosle and friend Kishore Kumar also gave some of the finest tunes of two decades and also their career best.

Like his father, R. D has also rendered his voice for a few tunes, and is known for the distinctive growl he lent to his vocals. S. D. Burman have always encouraged Pancham da’s career as a musician, and also gave him enough advice whenever necessary. It was following his father’s advice to concentrate on to music career that he gave up his idea to show face in movies. Not many knew that R. D penned lyrics for many Bengali film songs composed by his father. He used to create interesting sounds and rhythms in his songs from every piece of normal things, not just music instruments.

As it’s almost impossible to compile best 50 compositions of Pancham da, I have made a list of 100 of my favourite R. D. Burman’s tunes. It doesn’t imply that the tunes I chose are his career best 100. I have excluded many of his popular tunes of 1970s to give space to some of his less-noticed but wonderful tunes of 1980s. I have tried to include at least one song from all his music albums; that’s also one reason. Hope you will love my selection of songs. I would like to list the songs in the order of year of release, taking you for a slow walk from his first phase of career in the 1960s towards the last phase which ended in mid-1990s. Hope you will enjoy the ride.

R. D. Burman’s songs in the era of 1960s

R. D. Burman started his music journey in the early 1960s, marking his debut with Chhote Nawaab in 1961. Though he fully engaged in the music industry throughout this glorious era, he composed tunes for only 11 films of which songs of Teesri Manzil, Pyar Ka Mausam, Padosan and Baharon Ke Sapne were huge chartbusters, and still loved by music fans. It’s a strange co-incidence that Asha Parekh played female lead in three of these films directed by Nasir Hussain (except Padosan), and movies were commercial hits. Even after delivering successful music for Teesri Manzil and Padosan, he continued assisting his father. His association with Nasir Hussain played a vital role in revolutionizing Bollywood music and also gave him immense success. After the success of Teesri Manzil, the duo collaborated for all Nasir Hussain movies except Qayamat Se Qayamat  and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Interestingly Majrooh Sultanpuri penned lyrics for all these films.  

Though R. D’s tunes turned immensely popular among youth, he preferred to stay as an assistant to his father till early 1970s, worked as a music arranger, and also completed and arranged music for many of his unfinished works. He finished the work of Aradhana for his father in 1969, and gave two of its most memorable tunes to Kishore Kumar, which changed the course of journey of Bollywood music in a flash of a few moments. Next we witnessed was a new era of Bollywood music with three names coming together – Rajesh Khanna, R. D. Burman & Kishore Kumar.

1. Tumne Mujhe Dekha from Teesri Manzil (1966) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – It’s one of my most favourite Shammi Kapoor songs always, a romantic solo by Mohammed Raf. But surprisingly it was not composed by SJ, but by very young R. D. Burman. As a music composer, Teesri Manzil is R. D’s first successful work. I would like to begin this list with my most favourite song featuring Shammi Kapoor. Shammi Ji is performing this soft solo in a romantic ada before audience, and Asha Parekh is also present with tears in her eyes. Also read: Top soft solos sung by Rafi for Shammi Kapoor. 

2. O Mere Sona Re from Teesri Manzil (1966) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The most popular song belonging to the album featuring Shammi and Asha, it was the first successful association of Asha Bhosle & R. D. Burman, a time when Asha was mostly associated with O. P. Nayyar tunes. Who predicted then, the duo is to conquer Hindi cinema the next decade and will become life partners! After the death of R. D. Burman, Asha Bhosle recorded its remixed version for the album – Huzoor – E – Ala, the song revived by Lesle Lewis. 

3. Aaja Aaja Mein Hoon Pyar Tera from Teesri Manzil (1966) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The movie featured two of the rock numbers with heavy western music instruments and dance steps choreographed by Herman Benjamin, and both became extremely popular dance numbers of the era of 1960s. Asha and Shammi Kapoor were seen doing unique western dance steps, and the duet was sung by Asha Bhosle and Rafi.

4. O Haseena Zulfonwali Jaane Jahan from Teesri Manzil (1966) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – It’s one of the top items ever pictured on Helen, and Shammi Kapoor is also seen on the dance floor, while Asha Parekh is seated among spectators. Herman choreographed the dance steps. The duet was sung by Asha Bhosle and Rafi. The movie included 6 tracks – 2 solos sung by Rafi and rest four duets recorded in Asha Bhosle and Rafi’s voice. R. D created its high octave songs with a blend of rock, jazz, Latino and a twist of his own unique traits. 

Teesri Manzil is the only film composed by Burman for Shammi Kapoor during his glorious era as the romantic hero. They later associated for the films – Manoranjan and Shalimar. By then, Shammi Ji lost his charm in Bollywood, and started working in supporting roles. Burman has also worked in a few movies of Kapoor in the 1980s, where he played character roles. If you make of a list of popular works of Shammi and Burman together, sadly only Teesri Manzil can get into this list.

Nasir was keen to assign the job of music department to a youngster, and he managed to convince Shammi Kapoor as well. The songs were already recorded, and when Nasir made Shammi listening to the tunes, he started dancing. Despite the songs of Teesri Manzil became extremely popular, they never worked together in Shammi’s peak phase in Bollywood. But the film marked the beginning of Nasir Hussain’s collaboration with R. D. Burman, and duo later gave countless chartbusters to music fans. It was Burman’s first association with Majrooh Sultanpuri for Nasir Hussain movies and it continued till 1980s.

5. Deewana Mujhsa Nahin Iss Ambar from Teesri Manzil (1966) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – Music was the real strength of this musical hit, definitely one of his top 5 albums. This solo track featuring the lead pair was sung by none other than Rafi. It was also the last Hussain film in which Mohammed Rafi sang all the songs, and by the era of 1970s Kishore dominated the scene, and tunes were almost composed by R. D. Burman himself. There was not even a single track of Lata Mangeshkar in the entire album, or Kishore Kumar’s, though Burman has worked with both earlier. The movie also included a less-known but melodious duet of Kishore and Asha – Dekhiye Saahibon.

6. Kya Janu Sajan from Baharon Ke Sapne (1967) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – No one can deny the fact that it’s one of the finest solos ever sung by Lata Mangeshkar, in association with any music composer of Bollywood. Though the movie was B&W, this particular dream sequence song featuring the lead pair – Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh was filmed in colour. The song was reused in 2002 film, Dil Vil Pyar Pyar, a film which offered tribute to the legendary composer, and was sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy. Pancham da frequently worked with Majrooh throughout 1960s, before the beginning of his long-term association with Bakshi.

7. Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar Doon from Baharon Ke Sapne (1967) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – In this song sequence, Rajesh Khanna is seen in a gloomy mood, and Asha Parekh tries to make him happy, singing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. Chunari Sambal Gori – a dance sequence sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey too was extremely popular.

8. Waadiyan Mera Daaman from Abhilasha (1968) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – This song had two renderings by Rafi (filmed on Nanda and Sanjay Khan) and Lata featuring Nanda and Marathi theatre personality Kashinath Ghanekar. This extremely melodious track composed by Rahul Dev Burman is the greatest claim to fame. When you listen to Rafi’s rendition today, it’s hard to believe that R. D recorded such a beautiful song in this iconic voice in the late 1960s. The movie also included a duet – Pyar Hua Hai Jab Se, a dream sequence & dance number sung by Lata and Kishore, one of the earliest tracks sung by Kishore in R. D’s tunes. 

9. Mere Samnewale Khidki Mein from Padosan (1968) Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan – It was popular among youth for its catchy lyrics. Padosan is one of the early successful associations of Kishore Kumar-Burman duo. Sunil Dutt tries to woo Saira Banu in this song, and Kishore Kumar sings for him in the background. Next year, Kishore turned a playback singer in full swing and Pancham da was instrumental for it.

10. Kehna Hai Kehna Hai from Padosan (1968) Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan – Sunil Dutt tries to whoo Saira Banu in this romantic song, and Kishore Kumar sings for him hiding behind. Kishore’s supporting character for this film was inspired by the personality of his uncle, Dhananjay Banerjee – a classical singer, and inspirations were also drawn from legendary music director Khemchand Prakash. 

11. Mein Chali Mein Chali from Padosan (1968) Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan – The movie included two of the extremely popular solos of Lata Mangeshkar, filmed on Saira Banu, and Saira looks very cute in this song. It’s one of the rare duets sung by Mangeshkar sisters – Lata and Asha in Burman’s compositions.

12. Bhai Battur from Padosan (1968) Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan – As mentioned above, this Lata song can also never miss our list. The movie also included one more Lata solo – Sharm Aati Hai. ‘Ek Chatur Naar’ and ‘Meri Pyari Bindu’ are other famous songs.

13. Na Jaa O Mere Humdum from Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – This sad track featuring Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh is very close to my heart, and last week after the sad demise of Shashi Kapoor, I have been humming this Lata solo too often, as a tribute to one of the finest actors of Bollywood. 

14. Tum Bin Jaon Kahan from Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – It’s one of the rarest solos with two versions in Rafi and Kishore’s voice and both versions were popular. Kishore cooperated his signature yodelling style in his version. Rafi rendered his voice for Shashi while Kishore did it for Bharat Bhushan. The film is also known for R. D. Burman’s special appearance as a comedian, after which he turned a music composer in full-swing leaving behind his acting dreams.

15. Ni Sultana Re from Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) Lyrics: – I think it’s the first recorded duet of Lata and Rafi in R. D. Burman composition, and definitely the first chartbuster. Both the singers crooned it amazingly well by bringing high variations in pitches from low note to high and in reverse order, and Asha Parekh and Shashi Kapoor too danced pretty well. The movie also included the popular Lata single – Mein Na Miloongi.

The composer rose to stardom in the early 1970s, and throughout the decade, he remained the most popular and celebrated music composer of Bollywood. Despite giving significant contributions to Bollywood in this era, the composer was never honoured with a Filmfare award. He won it for the first time in 1980s for Sanam Tere Kasam. Though the tunes are good, they can never be compared with the tunes he composed in the 1960s and 1970s. The composer could have recognized earlier. For this legendary composer, award doesn’t cost too much or deteriorated his quality tunes and his most popular tunes were born in the 1970s. 

16. Gulabi Aanken from The Train (1970) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The dance sequences featuring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda may look funny at present times. But the song was extremely popular for the fast pace and the energy filled inside. It’s one of the rarest songs sung by Rafi for Rajesh Khanna in Pancham da’s tune. Ne Soniye – Rafi & Lata Solo and Kis Liye Maine Pyar Kiya – Lata Solo are other popular tracks.

17. Na Koi Umang Hai from Katti Patang (1971) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – It’s the single solo Lata track of the whole album. The song featured Asha Parekh in a sad mood. Anand Bakshi who penned all its 7 tracks was nominated for best lyrics at Filmfare awards for this particular song.

18. Pyar Deewana Hota Hai from Katti Patang (1971) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – Aradhana and Katti Patang – Songs sung by Kishore Kumar in both these films played a magnificent role to give Rajesh Khanna the real stardom which he received in a short interval of time, and its credits goes to R. D. Burman as well. This romantic track featured Asha Parekh and Rajesh Khanna.

19. Yeh Shyaam Mastani from Katti Patang (1971) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – Kishore Kumar incorporated his signature yodeling style in this highly eccentric romantic track. Rajesh Khanna appears in an ecstasy mood and Asha Parekh too appears with romantic eyes. R. D. Burman used Kishore Kumar’s voice to record all Khanna songs except Jis Gali Mein Tera Ghar. Aaj Na Chodenge – is a very popular holi song from the movie.

20. Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai from Katti Patang (1971) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – R. D. Burman used Kishore’s voice to record three timeless solos. Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai is an emotional sad song featuring Khanna and Kishore Kumar received a Filmfare nomination too. Though the songs of Katti Patang can be included in timeless classics list, it’s indeed sad that its composer couldn’t receive a nomination.

21. Phoolon Ka Taron Ka from Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This ‘Behna’ song had two versions and both are still popular. Dev Anand’s version was sung by Kishore Kumar (filmed at movie climax) and the child version was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. 

22. Dum Maro Dum from Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – Though the song got into a few controversies for the lyrics, this dance number well-established the career of Asha Bhosle, and also gifted her a Filmfare award. The movie also featured a duet, Kaanchi Re Kaanchi sung by Kishore and Lata. It was rumoured that S. D. Burman was extremely dissatisfied with Pancham da for tuning this song, and didn’t talk to him for some time.

23. Piya Tu Ab To Aaja from Caravan (1971) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – This cabaret featuring Helen was sung by Asha Bhosle. R. D. Burman provided the back vocals, and also rendered his voice for the iconic phrase, “Monica, O My Darling“. Majrooh penned all the 8 songs.

24. Dilbar Dil Se Pyare from Caravan (1971) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – Aruna Irani lip-synced to Lata Mangeshkar for this dance number, which also featured Jeetendra and Asha Parekh. Songs – Goria Kahan Tera Desh and Chadti Jawani Meri Chaal Mastani too were filmed on Aruna Irani. Kitna Pyara Wada is a popular duet of Rafi and Lata featuring the lead pair.

25. Chingari Koi from Amar Prem (1972) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – Compositions of Amar Prem was his quick reply to critics who always criticized the influence of western music in his work. The album played a magnificent role to end the supremacy of Rafi as the leading male voice of Bollywood. A popular song of the magic quadrumvirate ever – Burman, Kishore, Khanna & Anand Bakshi, it’s one of the finest tunes Burman ever composed. 

26. Raina Beeti Jaayi from Amar Prem (1972) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The songs of Amar Prem really surprised critics, particularly this track, strongly based on Raga Khamaj. Lata rendered her decade-best song with brilliance as well. The movie included a few more memorable songs such as Kuch To Log Kahenge, Yeh Kya Hua, Bada Nadhat Hai and also Doli Mein Bithai Ke sung by S. D. Burman, in lines with the title song of his own composition from Aradhana. Definitely Amar Prem is his masterpiece work.

27. Gum Hai Kise Ke Pyar Mein from Rampur Ke Laxman (1972) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar was filmed with beautiful frames, colourful set and the leading pair, Randhir Kapoor and Rekha also looked extremely romantic. 

28. Bangle Ke Peechhe from Samadhi (1972) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The dance number featuring Asha Parekh was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This Kaata Lagaa Song remixed in the 2000s was a huge chartbuster, but drew controversies too. The movie also included a popular solo of Asha Bhosle – Jab Tak Rahe Tan Mein Jiya.

29. O Mere Dil Ka Chein from Mere Jeevan Saati (1972) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – This film ran solely based on the star power of Rajesh Khanna. A forgettable film, only its songs are memorable. R. D. created magic with its tunes and almost all songs did exceptionally well. This evergreen song featured Rajesh Khanna and Tanuja in a romantic mood. Diwana Leke Aaya Hai and yodelling Chala Jaata Hoon are other popular Kishore solos from this film. 

30. O Saathi Chal from Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The biggest blockbuster of the year, I would like to include this duet featuring Hema Malini and Sanjeev Kumar, one of the early hit duets of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar in Burman’s music, whose pair later became iconic. Songs of Jawani Diwani also got released the same year, which established them as a romantic singing pair. 

31. Musafir Hoon Yaaro from Parichay (1972) Lyrics: Gulzar – This travel song, bit philosophical featuring Jeetendra was a solo track sung by Kishore da and was listed at #25 on Binaca Geetmala annual list 1973. Music credits have been given to Burman and guitarist Bhanu Gupta combined. 

32. Beete Na Bitayi from Parichay (1972) Lyrics: Gulzar – This particular song is a finest raga based song composed by Burman for Lata Mangeshkar, for which she received national award. The song featured actor Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri, who played father and daughter in the film, quite strange. Bhupinder’s voice was also used for this classic song. Sare Se Saare Gaama – is a popular duet of Kishore and Asha from the album.

33. Jaane Jaa Doondta from Jawani Diwani (1972) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – One of the best duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle all time, this hide-and-seek song was beautifully filmed on Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bhaduri. The movie featured three duets of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar including Agar Saaz Cheda To. The solo tracks of Kishore – Samne Yeh Kaun Aaya and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani too received warm welcome from youth.

34. Nahi Nahi Abhi Nahi from Jawani Diwani (1972) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The sizzling featured Jaya Bhaduri and Randhir Kapoor, and was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. Jaya Bhaduri who was till then known to have a next-door girl image appeared as glamorous college girl in the film.

35. Sun Champa Sun Tara from Apna Desh (1972) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This dance number featuring Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna is a lovely duet sung by Kishore and Lata, and also Kajra Lagake Gajra Sajake song.

36. Kiska Rasta Dekhe from Joshila (1973) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi – This Dev Anand starrer was a thriller. It’s a Kishore Kumar solo filmed on Dev while he is serving in jail. Also read: Top 50 solos sung by Kishore Kumar.

37. Yaadon Ki Baaraat from Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – R. D. Burman’s energetic music played a magnificent role in the super success of this film, though some of the tunes were ‘inspired’ ones. The duet version of Rafi and Kishore is indeed one of the rarest recorded songs, and was filmed in movie climax’s re-union moments featuring the three brothers – Dharmendra, Vijay Arora and Tariq Khan. It’s a highly emotional scene of the film. The song had yet another version  where Aamir Khan was seen as a child actor.

38. O Meri Soni Meri Tamanna from Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The movie had two duets in Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar’s voice. This song featuring Zeenat Aman and Vijay Arora has been remixed and revived several times since late 1990s.

39. Chura Liya Hai from Yadon Ki Baaraat (1973) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The most popular song of the album, it’s inspired from English song, If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium. But Burman made it his by adding his own flavours and music arrangements. He also incorporated the sound of glasses at the beginning of the song. The song sung by Asha Bhosle and Rafi featured Zeenat Aman and Vijay Arora. 

40. Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si from Anamika (1973) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – A very popular heartbreaking and sad solo of Kishore Kumar featuring Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri, it was listed at #4 on Binaca Geetmala annual list 1973.  It’s the single Kishore da song in the album consisting of 5 solos. 

41. Baahom Mein Chali from Anamika (1973) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – The movie also included Lata Mangeshkar’s very popular solo, Baahon Mein Chali Aa. This romantic tracks was listed at #36 on Binaca Geetmala annual list 1973. The movie also include Asha Bhosle’s teasing solo – Logo Na Maro.

42. Panna Ki Tamanna Hai Kii from Heera Panna (1973) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – A very popular duet pictured on Zeenat Aman and Dev Anand, the duet was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. 

43. Wada Karo from Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi – Shashi Kapoor tries to woo Sharmila Tagore on a skating floor in fancy costumes. The duet was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. 

44. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na from Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi – This song has two versions – a solo version of Kishore da and yet another popular duet aside child singer Sushma Shrestha. In the male solo version, Sharmila Tagore was featured aside Shashi Kapoor and the song was filmed in spectacular snow filled tourist spots of Shimla. The blockbuster film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na coined its title from a phrase of this song. 

45. Hum Dono Do Premi from Ajnabee (1974) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The first Bollywood song to be fully shot on the top of the train, it was the first film of the lead pair too. This romantic track filmed on Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.

46. Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein from Ajnabee (1974) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This sizzling rain song featuring Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman is still popular among youngsters. Voices were rendered by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The movie had four songs, and all of them had Kishore’s voice.

47. Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se of Ajnabee (1974) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The song picturization starring Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman makes us remember the popular ‘Khilte Hain Gul Yahan’ track of Sharmilee, that one too, a popular solo of Kishore Kumar. Ajnabee is a successful association of quadrumvirate of 1970s – Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar, Anand Bakshi and Burman.

48. Karvatein Badalti Rahe from Aap Ki Kasam (1974) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – A top duet of Kishore and Lata in R. D. Burman tune, all the songs were well received by critics and audience alike. The song featured top star pair – Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. However the movie fared only average. R. D earned a Filmfare nomination for its compositions. After this movie, Mumtaz took a sabbatical from acting, following her marriage.

49. Jai Jai Shiv Shankar from Aap Ki Kasam (1974) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This dance track is extremely energetic, and can make anyone dance to its tunes of Pancham da. The song featuring Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz, and sung by Lata and Kishore was listed at #2 on Binaca Geetmala annual list 1974. Other tracks include a duet of the duo – Suno Kaho, and a solo track of Kishore – Zindagi Ke Safar. I wish I could add both these songs as well. But when I tried to include maximum songs of R. D, I have to leave both. 

50. O Hansini from Zehreela Insaan (1974) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – Though this movie starring Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh was a huge flop, Zehreela Insaan is still remembered for this Pancham da tune and Kishore’s voice. In 2002, Hariharan sang the same song for the movie, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, as a tribute to the great composer. 

51. Kehdo Tumhe from Deewaar (1975) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi – This popular duet featuring Shashi Kapoor and Neetu Singh was sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. The song has been successfully remixed several times including the most recent version for the movie, Badshaho in 2017.

52. Sapna Mera Toot Gaya from Khel Khel Mein (1975) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – This sad solo sung by Asha Bhosle and R. D. Burman featured Aruna Irani and Rakesh Roshan. All the songs were huge chartbusters – Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karenge, Hum Ne Tum Ko Dekha, Ek Mein Aur Ek Tu etc.

53. O Majhi Re Apna Kinara from Khushboo (1975) Lyrics: Gulzar – This Kishore Kumar solo song featuring Jeetendra was penned by its director and got noticed for its intense lyrics as well as powerful rendition. Jeetendra owns a few glimpses of his very popular ‘Musafir’ song from Parichay, composed by Burman.

54. Ghar Jayegi Tar Jayegi from Khushboo (1975) Lyrics: Gulzar – This solo sung by Lata Mangeshkar explores the dreams of an unmarried girl and Hema Malini made it memorable through her natural acting skills. Pancham and Gulzar shared an amazing creative relationship and hence he reserved some of his finest compositions for the poet-director since his early films. The song had a popular remixed version in the 2000s.

55. Tere Bina Zindagi Se from Aandhi (1975) Lyrics: Gulzar – Whenever R. D. Burman’s best compositions come into discussion, songs of Aandhi featuring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen can never miss it. In fact, the popular duets of Kishore and Lata – Tere Bina Zindagi Se, Is Mode Se Jaate Ho and Tum Aa Gaye Ho are hot favourites of film celebrities as well.  

56. Mehbooba O Mehbooba from Sholay (1975) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – R. D. Burman earned a Filmfare nomination in best playback singer category for this item song featuring Amjad Khan, Jalal Agha and Helen. Yeh Dosti, Koi Haseena and Jab Tak Hai Jaan too were popular.

57. Bade Achchhe Lagte Hain from Balika Vadu (1976) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The song was sung by Kishore Kumar’s son Amit, who registered his first hit song through this one. The humming female voice of the song is believed to be that of heroine’s. Correct me if I am wrong. The song featuring Sachin and Rajini Sharma was listed at #26 on the Binaca Geetmala annual list 1977.

58. Mere Nayana from Mehbooba (1976) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This touching song rendered by Kishore da can bring tears to listeners’ eyes. The song based on Raga Shivranjani played an important role in the sequence continuity of the film, and it had solo versions in Kishore and Lata’s voice. 

59. Naam Gum Jayega from Kinara (1977) Lyrics: Gulzar – After Anand Bakshi and Majrooh Sultanpuri, Gulzar remained the most successful lyricist for R. D. Burman. While Bakshi and Majrooh were mostly associated with main stream commercial movies, Burman’s association with Gulzar for offbeat and parallel movies remained equally successful. Kinara too belonged to this genre. Bhupinder and Lata Mangeshkar rendered their voices for this beautiful song for Hema Malini and Jeetendra. Abke Na Sawan Barse is a popular solo sung by Lata.

60. Aise Na Mujhe Dekho of Darling Darling (1977) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – Zeenat Aman and Dev Anand formed an amazing sizzling pair in the mid-1970s. They also worked together as siblings in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. This Kishore Kumar song’s remixed version became extremely popular in the mid-2000s.  

61. Yeh Ladka Hai Allah Kaisa Hai from Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – 9 of its 10 tracks belong to peppy dance tracks with some loud music. This song featured Kaajal Kiran in a crazy mood, alongside Tariq Khan. Rafi and Asha sang this very popular duet. 

62. Kya Hua Tera Wada from Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – It’s the only song which earned Rafi a National award. It’s also tagged as a strong comeback song of Rafi in the era dominated by Kishore songs. But he passed away in 1980 at the age of only 55. He also received his 6th and final Filmfare award for this song. The song was lip synced by Tariq Khan who appeared as a stage performer for this song; and Sushma Shreshta’s voice is also heard. Rishi Kapoor and Kaajal Kiran are among spectators. The movie featured a string of melodies – Tum Kya Jano Mohabbat Kya Hai, Aa Dil Kya Mehfil, Chand Mera Dil, Mil Gaya Humko Saathi etc.

63. Hai Agar Dushman from Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – One of the finest Qawalis of Hindi cinema ever, it was filmed on Rishi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman, and sung by Rafi and Asha Bhosle. The movie also included a very popular foot-tapping number featuring Rishi Kapoor – Bachna E Haseeno which topped the music charts of the year. This song was later remixed and used for Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir Kapoor. Film’s title was also coined using this phrase.

64. Hum Bewafa Harghiz Na from Shalimar (1978) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This much-anticipated film tanked at box office, but is known for this popular ‘Bewafa’ song sung by Kishore da filmed on Dharmendra. Both Kishore Kumar and R. D. Burman received nominations at Filmfare awards for their respective works. “One Two Cha Cha“ song also gathered a Filmfare nomination for Usha Uthup. The movie entered Bollywood history books as it recorded the last Rafi song for Shammi Kapoor. 

65. Tere Bina Jiya Laage Na from Ghar (1978) Lyrics: Gulzar – The movie starring Rekha and Vinod Mehra is known for some wonderful tunes sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. This particular solo track featuring the lead pair was sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

66. Aaj Kal Paon from Ghar (1978) Lyrics: Gulzar – Yet another popular solo sung by Lata Mangeshkar, the song featured the lead pair in a romantic mood. The movie also included popular Kishore Kumar solo, Phir Wohi Raat Hai and the duet, Aap Ki Aankhon Mein Kuchh. 

67. Rhim Jhim Gire Sawan from Manzil (1979) Lyrics: Yogesh – R. D recorded some of the finest tunes for Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s and 1980s in Kishore Kumar’s voice. This monsoon song has two solo versions sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, and Moushumi Chatterjee was featured in both. 

68. Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahaani from The Great Gambler (1979) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – Top Asha Bhosle song in Burman’s composition, voices of Amitabh Bachchan and Sharad Kumar are also heard. The song featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman was filmed on a Gondola in Venice’s Grand Canal. The movie also included a popular duet of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Neetu Singh – Pehle Pehle Pyaar Ki Mulaqaatein.

69. Aanewala Pal from Gol Maal (1979) Lyrics: Gulzar – This cult classic comedy film is blessed with one of the finest tunes of R. D. Burman ever. This song is nostalgic to many who love movies of late 1970s and early 1980s, a period which witnessed a transformation in filmmaking and music. The song featured Amol Palekar and Bindiya Goswami, and Gulzar received Filmfare awards. It’s quite strange that both Kishore da and Pancham da didn’t win any nomination at Filmfare awards. My favourite Kishore/Pancham track ever…..

70. Sawan Ke Jhoole Pade Hai from Jurmana (1979) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The song featured Rakhee Gulzar aside Amitabh and had two versions, both sung by Lata.

R. D. Burman and his low phase of 1980s

1980s is definitely the worst phase of Hindi film music. Legends have gone (both leading male voices and exceptionally good composers) and the rest of them were going through their low phases of respective career graphs. Apart from a few memorable tunes composed by R. D. Burman and Laxmikanth-Pyarelal, there is nothing significant to remember throughout 1980s. Fully dominated by an era of discos and loud music, when most of the talented musicians including Laxmi-Pyare compromised with youth’s demands, R. D remained himself. Some of his matured tunes in association with Gulzar were born in the 1980s, which are exceptionally well. Melody remained at peak in R. D. Burman tunes in the 1980s.

When R. D stood firm in his decision to produce quality tunes, only less producers approached him, and his deteriorating health condition and bypass surgery worsened situation. He lost many of ambitious projects during this time. Yet as a true fan of R. D, I am proud of his firm decision not to compromise with quality of work, and that may be the reason why, though a few his works of 1980s can be tagged ‘top-class’; Masoom, Yeh Waada Raha, Libaas, Agar Tum Na Hote, Saagar, Jeeva, Sathe Pe Satha, Bemisaal, Sanam Teri Kasam, Kudrat, Rocky, Izzajat, Love Story, Parinda and Sunny to name a few. Hats off to the genius who composed some of the finest tunes in the worst era of Bollywood music!

71. Pal Do Pal Ka Saath Humara from Burning Train (1980) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi – This much-anticipated film with an ensemble star cast and huge budget burned producers’ pocket. But it was not a bad movie either, and included some nice songs composed by our own Pancham da. This qawwali was sung by Mohammed Rafi & Asha Bhosle and was filmed on Jeetendra & Neetu Singh. Pehli Nazar Mein Humne was also popular.

72. Pyaar Karne Waale from Shaan (1980) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This big-budget film couldn’t achieve the success as expected. The movie included many hit songs like Yamma Yamma, Jaanu Meri Jaan, Doston Se Pyar Kiya etc. Yet this title track sung by Asha Bhosle and performed onscreen by Parveen Babi has got something special. Perhaps the lyrics penned by Bakshi did the wonder.

73. Hamein Tumse Pyar Kitna from Khudrat (1981) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – This classic R. D song had two versions and both were popular. Kishore version featured Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini in a romantic mood, while Parveen Sultana version was lip-synced by Aruna Irani as a classical performer on stage. Both were nominated for the same song in the respective categories at Filmfare awards and Sultana walked away with the trophy.

74. Hoga Tumse Pyara Kaun from Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai (1981) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – One of the finest songs sung by Shailender Singh, the ghost voice of Rishi Kapoor, the song was filmed on the top of a train. Padmini Kolhapuri was seen aside Rishi. Though the song sequence doesn’t look natural, it brings some memories of ‘Hum Dono Do Premi’ tuned by same composer. 

75. Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua from Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai (1981) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri – This duet sung by Rafi and Asha also had a solo version sung by Rafi, and featured Rishi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapuri.

76. Dekho Maine Dekha Hai Yeh Ek Sapna from Love Story (1981) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The movie was the perfect launch pad for Kumar Gaurav and Vijayeta Pandit and all its songs were instant hits. This duet was sung by Amit Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Yaad Aa Raha Hai was the next popular song.

77. Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai from Rocky (1981) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – The movie marked the acting debut of Sanjay Dutt and he was featured aside Tina Munim in this evergreen romantic song. The composer experimented with Kishore Kumar and his son Amit Kumar’s voice for Sanjay Dutt in the 1980s, and this one was recorded in Kishore and Lata’s voice.  The movie also featured the dance track, Aa Dekhe Zara, a duet of Kumar and Asha.

78. Hamein Raston Ki Zaroorat from Naram Garam (1981) Lyrics: Gulzar – It’s mother tune of ‘Sagar Kinare Dil E Pukare‘ (originally inspired from Thandi Hawayein composed by his father), and was not so popular when got released. He was so fascinated by the tune that he composed ‘Hume Aur Jeene Ke’ and ‘Sagar Kinare‘ from this song sung by Asha Bhosle, and both these songs became immensely popular. This song was filmed on Amol Palekar and Swaroop Sampat.

79. Kitne Bhi Tu Karle Sitam from Sanam Teri Kasam (1982) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – Though R. D remained the most celebrated music composer of 1970s, and earned multiple nominations, surprisingly he managed to bag his first Filmfare award only in 1982 for Sanam Teri Kasam, though its tunes can never be compared to Amar Prem, Katti Patang, Aandhi, Aap Ki Kasam etc which ruled the music charts in the 1970s. He recorded its popular peppy and dancing songs in Kishore and Asha’s voices. In this song Kamal Hassan teases Reena Roy in a romantic style. The song also had a solo version sung by Asha. R. D also recorded a duet aside his wife, Jane Jaan O Meri Jane Jaan which was the top song of the album. As most of the songs were peppy, they emerged as the trendsetters of the era exclusively belonging to disco and high beat songs. 

80. A Ri Pawan Dhunde Kise Tera Mann from Bemisaal (1982) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – One of the finest tunes in the worst era of Hindi music, this solo track sung by Lata Mangeshkar featured Amitabh Bachchan and Rakhee. Kitna Khoobsurat is yet another noted song.

81. Dilbar Mere of Satte Pe Satta (1982) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – Though Amitabh Bachchan is less-linked to romantic films and songs, this particular song is an exception. In this movie too, Amitabh appeared as a hero who doesn’t know how to express love or how to be romantic (perhaps the only character throughout his career filmed this way), where he gifts apples instead of flowers to impress the heroine, Hema Malini. What a lovely song of Kishore da, and how beautifully Amitabh expressed it on screen! Hats off to both. 

82. Tu Tu Hai Wohi from Yeh Waada Raha (1982) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – This song is extremely popular even today. The song featuring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Poonam Dhillion in different versions was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. This title track is closely linked with film’s script too. R. D worked with Gulshan Bawra in the late 1970s and early 1980s in many films, who penned the iconic lyrics of ‘Tu Tu hai Wohi’.  Ishq Mera Bandagi Hai is a popular duet of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.

83. Tujhse Naraz Nahi from Masoom (1983) Lyrics: Gulzar – The compositions earned Burman his second Filmfare award. All the tunes are matchless, particularly this sad track by Anup Ghoshal. The song had a Lata Mangeshkar version too, yet the male version became popular. Gulzar-Burman duo gave opportunity to a few less heard voices and their experiment proved successful. The songs – Lakdi Ki Kaathi and Do Naina Aur Ek Kahani are also remarkable. Naseeruddin Shah was featured in ‘Naaraz’ song aside young Jugal Hasraj. It’s indeed sad that when we have to choose the best songs, we need to make a choice among great songs, which is indeed a rough path always. 

84. Agar Tum Na Hote from Agar Tum Na Hote (1983) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – It was used as the theme song of the movie and used for continuity of the film. The song had solo versions sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar and their duet version too. Rajesh Khanna and Rekha were featured in different versions of this song. Kishore Kumar received Filmfare award for best playback singer for this song.

85. Bachke Rehna Re Baba from Pukar (1983) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – This dance number was sung by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Burman, and featured Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim and Randhir Kapoor. Samandar Mein Nahake is a peppy number rendered in the composer’s voice.

86. Badal Yun Garajta Hai from Betaab (1983) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This song featuring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Shabbir Kumar. Jab Hum Jawa Honge was also popular.

87. Aur Kya Aheda Wafa from Sunny (1984) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This lovely and soft song was sung by Suresh Wadkar and featured Sunny Deol, Amrita Singh and Sharmila Tagore. The song had Asha Bhosle version filmed on Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore.

88. Jaane Kya Baat from Sunny (1984) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi – This Lata Mangeshkar song featuring Amrita Singh too was very popular. Both these songs have a ‘ghazal’ touch.

89. Aisa Sama from Zameen Aasmaan (1984) Lyrics: Anjaan – This romantic movie is best remembered for one solo of Lata Mangeshkar featuring Sanjay Dutt and Anita Raj. This song brings thoughts of beautiful seasons of human hearts to our minds.

90. Tu Rootha To Main Ro Dungi Sanam from Jawaani (1984) Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra – This chartbuster song featuring debutantes – Neelam and Karan Shah was sung by Asha Bhosle and Amit Kumar.

91. Sagar Kinare from Saagar (1985) Lyrics: Javed Akhtar – Kishore Kumar received his 5th and final Filmfare award for this song featuring Dimple and Rishi. It had two versions – a duet of Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, and a sad solo version by Lata. The movie also included a sizzling duet featuring Rishi and Dimple, Jaane Do Naa sung by Shailendra Singh and Asha Bhosle, and a solo romantic song of Kishore – Chehra Hai Ya. R. D. and Javed Akhtar (who penned all its lyrics) also received Filmfare nominations.

92. Roz Roz Aankhon Tale from Jeeva (1986) Lyrics: Gulzar – The song featuring Sanjay Dutt and Mandakini was one of the top romantic hits of the era, and was sung by Amit Kumar and Asha Bhosle. 

93. Khamosh Sa Afsana from Libaas (1988) Lyrics: Gulzar – The soft songs of the film composed by Burman are timeless, and done during his low phase of professional career. The movie showcased at two film festivals never had a theatre release for public in India. It was shown twice in 1992 and in 2014. There were news that the movie will have a theatre release in 2017, on the occasion of Gulzar’s birthday. But I am not sure if the film had a theatre release. Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Raj Babbar played lead roles based on human relationships. This track of Suresh Wadkar and Lata holds a fragrance of a sweet ghazal, and R. D should be praised for tuning such a lovely composition in an era fully dominated by loud music.

94. Sili Hawa Choo Gayi from Libaas (1988) Lyrics: Gulzar – This song is a continuation of whatever told just above. This soft track exclusively belongs to Gulzar-Lata-Burman trio.

95. Mere Kuch Saman from Izzazat (1988) Lyrics: Gulzar – Lyricist Gulzar and singer Asha Bhosle received National award for this particular song, though Burman couldn’t win any. But Burman was praised for tuning the lyrics which didn’t have any rhythm or pattern. Gulzar received Filmfare award too. The song featured Naseeruddin Shah and Anuradha Patel.

96. Katra Katra from Izzajat (1988) Lyrics: Gulzar – This Asha Bhosle track featuring Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah was recorded in a unique way and was well appreciated too. Her Chhoti Si Kahani Se was also popular.

97. Tum Se Milke from Parinda (1989) Lyrics: Khurshid Hallauri – One of the finest tracks towards the end of his career, Asha Bhosle sang it beautifully too. There were only 4 tracks in this album, and all the four included Suresh Wadkar’s voice too, including this one. It’s a romantic song featuring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit.

R. D. Burman and the era of 1990s

After a lot of struggling days – with his professional career, health issues and personal career, the legend world left the eternal world after contributing one of the finest works of era of 1990s – 1942: A Love Story. In the 1990s he didn’t give too much to music industry except this one. But it was his masterpiece work, which surprised many. Its music broke several musical records, remained the top romantic tracks of the year and also gave him his third and final Filmfare awards which he has always failed to receive. But sadly, he was not there to see the overwhelming response he received for his final work; a much awaited break he was waiting for.

But we can’t deny the fact that after the huge success of 1942: A Love Story, many fans returned back to him, recollected his contributions to the music industry in the past 33 years and fixed his name as the most popular music composer of golden era of Hindi music, a great recognition to the legend who composed tunes far ahead of his time. He composed tunes, keeping in mind, the taste of youth and demand of future generations, and that may be reason why his fans are not bored with his compositions though listened hundreds of times. This column is my tribute to one of the greatest legends of Hindi music ever.

98. Ek Ladki Ko from 1942: A Love Story (1994) Lyrics: Javed Akhtar – Only a few songs have earned the recognition for best music, wordings and renditions. One of the finest songs of Kumar Sanu’s career, the romantic song filmed on Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala received an overwhelming response from listeners belonging to all age groups. Sadly, R. D. passed away before he could see the huge success of his compositions. Akhtar, Burman and Kumar Sanu received Filmfare awards. It’s the 5^th and final award won by Sanu, breaking Kishore Kumar’s record of consecutive 4 wins with which R. D was associated most, and never managed to win 6th. 

99. Pyar Hua from 1942 A Love Story (1994) Lyrics: Javed Akhtar – The movie swept all music awards at Filmfare. While ‘Ek Ladki Ko’ bagged best lyricist and male playback, Kavita Krishnamurthy received her first Filmfare award for Pyar Hua Chupke Se filmed on Manisha Koirala. She also sang the duet – Rhim Jhim Rhim Jhim aside Kumar Sanu, and the songs gave her big break she was waiting for long years. 

100. Kuch Na Kaho from 1942 A Love Story (1994) Lyrics: Javed Akhtar – What a wonderful rendition by Kumar Sanu! Lovely filmed on lead pair too! The song had a female version sung by Lata Mangeshkar, one of the last associations of two legends. Here I conclude this list with the top romantic track of the album … Kuch Na Kaho… Kuch Bhi Na Kaho………

And the list is not ending……

Here I add a few more top tunes composed by R. D. Burman. A few of them definitely can be listed among his best 100, but I had to exclude a few from the final list to make space for a few more, and many of them are indeed close to my heart more than those listed above – Kanchi Re Kanchi, Phir Se Aaiyo Badra Bidesi, Tere Liye Palkon Ki, Tum Aa Gaye Ho, Kuch To Log Kahenge…… I might have missed many great songs too. I was very much confused in selecting songs even I had a safe bet with a list of 100 songs. I admit. He has contributed a huge list of songs to Bollywood in a career spanning to more than three decades. And the whole list of more than 250 songs is the testimony to prove that R. D was indeed a musical genius, gifted by god to Bollywood music fans for all those who love and live through real music. Yes, we can’t tag R. D songs under a particular genre, they are different from one another in style, and he owns a group of songs to please every type of music lovers – melody, romantic, party or any thing else. In fact he revolutionized Indian film music, no doubt.
