India’s biggest mall opened at Kochi on Mahasivarathri day 2013
Can anyone imagine total area needed to construct 33 football fields be made available together at one place in the heart of a commercial city for a shopping mall? More surprising is that it happened not in a metro or any other big city of India, but in a port city of God’s own country Kerala! More than 360 outlets with a hypermarket at two levels, 4500-seater food courts, 9-screen multiplex of PVR, 18 pairs of escalators, parking area for 4800 vehicles at a home, a 5-star hotel named JW Marriott Hotels and most interesting, 5000 square feet ice skating rink. What else is needed to spend a whole day in fun if you have enough money in hand! One facility that strike my mind is ‘special facilities for disabled’, really a wonderful move.
On Mahasivarathri day, as it was Sunday my family decided to attend a birthday party of one of our relatives who now stays at Kochi city. Suddenly we came to know that Lulu shopping mall at Edapally is also opening exactly on the same day. So, after the birthday party, we reached Edapally by car with an intense desire to see the shopping mall. But in huge traffic blocks and crowded streets, we changed our decision to visit the mall. It occurred when we saw large queues in front of the mall to get inside. As we were not willing to wait patiently for hours, we fled from the place postponing our visit to another occasion. But I took a few photos of that crowded mall to remember the visit on that particular day – 10 March 2013.
A small note on Lulu Shopping Mall
Earlier, High Street Phoenix of Mumbai with 310,000 metre square owned the title of biggest shopping mall in India. Now with the parking area included, Lulu Shopping Mall at Kochi owns the title of ‘Biggest shopping mall in India’. 3,900,000 sq ft is the total area of this huge mall with 230,000 square metres alone for shopping area. This shopping mall belongs to EMKE group with its managing director M.A.Yousuf Ali, an NRI billionaire hailing from Thrissur, who recently found place in Forbes list of 1000 richest persons of the world. Lulu Hypermarket is a retail venture of EMKE group based on Dubai and Kochi is their first hypermarket in India. It may be because it’s Yousuf Ali’s own place!
Facilities like Alice’s Wonderland
A bowling alley, clubs, multi cuisine restaurants, swimming pool, 5-D cinema hall, water rides games arcades and coffee shops scattered around in a massive area of 230,000 square metres. It’s expected that this mall with generate job opportunities for 8000 people directly and more than 20K people indirectly.
