Hayagreeva Maddi

Hayagreeva Maddi is a traditional Udupi dish served as a sweet. It’s usually made at homes during auspicious occasions and served to deity as offerings (nivedyam). It is offered every day to Sri Sode Vadiraja Matt Udupi.

Ingredients for Hayagreeva Maddi:

1. Bengal gram dal – 2 cups

2. Jaggery powdered – 2 cups

3. Raisins – 8 or 10

    Broken cashews – 8 or 10

4. Scrapped coconut – ½ cup

    Ghee – ¼ cup

    Cardamom powder – ½ small spoon

    Salt – A pinch

How to prepare Hayagreeva Maddi?

1. Add 5 cups of water to Bengal gram and cook it in pressure cooker.

2. Strain excess water from cooked gram.

3. Fry cashews and raisins in 1 spoon of ghee.

4. Add jaggery powder to it and heat it in a thick bottom pan.

5. When the contents turn thick, add fried cashews and raisins.

6. Mix it well and add ingredients no: 4.

7. Mix it well and cook for next 5-10 minutes.

8. Put off the flame.
