Harichandana Malarile song from Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu – Lyrics in English with Translation

Prananadhanenikku nalkiya

Paramanandha rasathe

Paravathineluthamoo (Female – chorus)

The eternal bliss given by my soulmate

Can you come to say?

Harichandana Malarile Madhuvay

Haramilakum Mrigamadalayamay

Marilidayum Marakeli Lalasavegam

As honey in the flower of red sandalwood

As an intoxicating wild soft tune

Falling on chest,

The intense play with desire & passion

Neela Nilakulirilulaavum

Neyyambal Poonkanavay Nee

Nin Dalangal Kan Thurakkey

Kaaman Unnarnallo

You became my dream like lily,

Swaying in the blue & chilled moonlight.

While your petals open eyes,

Cupid is waking.

Harichandana Malarile Madhuvay

Haramilakum Mrigamadalayamay

Marilidayum Marakeli Lalasavegam

As honey in the flower of red sandalwood

As an intoxicating wild soft tune

Falling on chest,

The intense play with desire & passion

Ullil Kali Kollum Minnalo

Kadamizhiyil Veesum Azhakano

Vingum Alivano

Is it the angry lightening inside you?

What blowing in your inner eyes,

Is it beauty or dissolving sympathy?

Ullil Kali Kollum Minnalo

Kadamizhiyil Veesum Azhakano

Vingum Alivano

Is it the angry lightening inside you?

What blowing in your inner eyes,

Is it beauty or dissolving sympathy?

Marile Thengalil

Paribhavam Urayunno

In the sobbing of your bosom

Are your gripes freezing?

Harichandana Malarile Madhuvay

Haramilakum Mrigamadalayamay

Marilidayum Marakeli Lalasavegam

As honey in the flower of red sandalwood

As an intoxicating wild soft tune

Falling on chest,

The intense play with desire & passion

Poonthen Mozhithoovum Kaamamo

Porulariyathennil Muzhukunno

Veenu Pidayunno

Is it lust in your honey-like words?

Is it resonating in me?

With meanings unknown,

Are they falling down & struggling?

Poonthen Mozhithoovum Kaamamo

Porulariyathennil Muzhukunno

Veenu Pidayunno

Is it lust in your honey-like words?

Is it resonating in me?

With meanings unknown,

Are they falling down & struggling?

Poomkuyil Konchalil

Oliyumorazhakano

Are you a beauty hiding in –

The sweet talk of cuckoo?

Harichandana Malarile Madhuvay

Haramilakum Mrigamadalayamay

Marilidayum Marakeli Lalasavegam

As honey in the flower of red sandalwood

As an intoxicating wild soft tune

Falling on chest,

The intense play with desire & passion

Neela Nilakulirilulaavum

Neyyambal Poonkanavay Nee

Nin Dalangal Kan Thurakkey

Kaaman Unnarnallo

You became my dream like lily,

Swaying in the blue & chilled moonlight.

While your petals open eyes,

Harichandana Malarile Madhuvay

Haramilakum Mrigamadalayamay

As honey in the flower of red sandalwood

Prananadhanenikku nalkiya

The eternal bliss given by my soulmate

End note:

Manju Warrier won National award (special mention) for this movie, released after she took a sabbatical from films at the age of 20, after a glorious innings. Thilakan, mostly seen in serious father roles exhibited his talents, in ‘Sringar’ avatar. Manju’s expressions too are amazing.

The first two lines belong to an erotic poem written by Irayimman Thampi for the lover of King of Travancore, Swathi Thirunal. The rest lines were penned by Kavalam Narayana Panicker, carrying the same tone throughout.

Irayimman Thampi’s lullaby ‘Omana Thinkal Kidavo’, he wrote for baby Swathi Thirunal in the early 19th century, is widely regarded as the most popular lullaby in Malayalam. Its English translated version featured in ‘Life of Pie’ was shortlisted for best original score in the Academy awards, bringing a lot of controversies back then.

Swathi Thirunal, a patron of arts and music, fell in love with a court dancer & she inspired most of his works. He composed more than 400 Carnatic & Hindustani pieces. Theirs was an unsuccessful love story & he died at 32. As the story goes, both had a fight & didn’t talk long. Poet penned it on the request of the dancer Sughandhavalli, to break the ice. She performed it before the king, and this song brought them back together.
