Hasrat Jaipuri – Urdu poet and Hindi film lyricist of the glorious era best known for his association with Shankar-Jaikishen

Hasrat Jaipuri (1922 – 1999) was a celebrated poet of Urdu and Hindi literature. He was also one of the leading lyricists of Bollywood cinema through 1950s to 1970s, and he continued penning his lyrics till his last breath. As a lyricist he authored many evergreen Bollywood songs and is best known for his association with Shankar Jaikishen duo. In fact Shailendra and Hasrat remained the regular lyricists of SJ throughout their peak years as composers, and both the songs for which Hasrat Jaipuri won Filmfare award for best lyricist were composed by them. Hasrat Jaipuri was born in Jaipur during British rule in India. Later he added ‘Jaipuri’ tag to his pen name ‘Hasrat’. His real name is Iqbal Husain. Initially he studied English medium and later Urdu and Persian languages from his grandfather. He started writing verses at the age of around 20. It was during those days when he wrote a poem “Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar, Ke Tum Naaraaz Na Hona” for a Hindu girl whom he fell in love. He was not sure if the poetic letter was delivered to her. However the marriage didn’t happen. Years later Raj Kapoor liked its wordings and included it for his movie, Sargam. The song became a love slogan of the era of 1960s.

Hasrat came to Mumbai in 1940 and initially worked as a bus conductor with a monthly salary of 11 rupees. By that time he had already started writing poems and while at Mumbai, he started presenting his verses in mushairas (gatherings of poets). He was spotted by cine personality Prithviraj Kapoor who recommended his name to Raj Kapoor. Thus Hasrat got his first break through 1949 movie ‘Barsaat’, and the song – Jiya Beqaraar Hai became an instant hit. The song also marked the successful association of the lyricist with music composer duo Shankar-Jaikishen. They continued working together for more than two decades till the death of Jaikishan in 1971. After the death of Jaikishan too, he continued working with Shankar.

Junglee, Barsaat, Love in Tokyo, Prince, Sangam, Pagla Kahin Ka, Andaz etc are his major works with Shankar-Jaikishen. His successful collaboration with other music composers include – Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne, Sehra, Parvarish etc. Apart from Raj Kapoor, he frequently associated with filmmakers like V. Shantaram, Pramod Chakravorty etc. He has also worked with composers like Datta Ram, S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Vasant Desai, Ravindra Jain, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Bappi Lahiri etc, but not so frequent. Needless to say he penned lyrics for some of the best songs of 1950s and 1960s composed by SJ, which built the careers of Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and many other actors. His songs also played a magnificent role in establishing the careers of Mukesh, Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

More than 90% of his film songs were penned for Shankar Jaikishen, who remained the top and most successful music composer of 1960s. Following the death of Shailendra in 1966, the composer exclusively worked with Hasrat throughout 1970s, and later worked with a few more lyrics too. However by that time, the celebrated composers have already passed their glorious period. Hasrat’s career too witnessed a downfall after the death of Jaikishen. Yet he remained active in the industry till 1990s.

Hasrat Jaipuri – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. He worked as a bus conductor in Mumbai for 8 years in the 1940s before he turned a celebrated poet and lyricist. He also made toy clays those days and sold them to earn a living, and slept at footpath near to Mumbai Opera House.

2. He used to sleep in the footpath of Mumbai streets during his struggling days in the early 1940s, and common workers were his best friends. He became deeply bonded to a daily wage worker who slept near to him every day. But one day he passed away, and deeply depressed Hasrat penned the poem, ‘Mazdoor Ki Laash’. When he recited this poem in a mushaira, Prithviraj Kapoor happened to hear it and asked his son Raj Kapoor to give him a break in film industry. And the rest is history.

3. 1949 movie, Barsaat marked his debut as a lyricist and Shankar-Jaikishen as composers. They collaborated together for all projects, along with Shailendra till 1970s. Shailendra 

4. He and Shailendra had a mutual understanding, and they used to divide the works while working with SJ, which is a very rare phenomenon in any profession.

5. He wrote his first film song – Jiya Beqaraar Hai based on an already created tune of Shankar-Jaikishen, as agreed to Raj Kapoor.

6. His most popular romantic song, “Yeh Mera Prem Patra”, which bagged him the first Filmfare award was related to his love interest in his real life. Hasrat wrote this song when he fell in love with a Hindu girl named Radha, and wrote this poem for her. It was his first love letter for her and he was not sure throughout his lifetime, whether his lady love got that love letter. Interestingly Vyjayathimala’s character name in Sangam was also Radha. 

7. His love towards Radha, a Hindu girl made him a poet. It also taught him the first lessons of love, and the poet feels that true love is above religion. He wrote his first poem – ‘Tu Jharokon Se Jo Jhaake To Mein Itna Poochoon’ for his love at the age of around 21. Very soon he left his hometown and reached Mumbai in search of a job and became a bus conductor.

8. He was honoured with a doctorate degree by the World University Round Table.

9. While working as a bus conductor in Mumbai, he had a habit for not giving tickets to beautiful ladies who travel in his bus. Instead he used to say that seeing her beauty, he gets inspired to write and his mind fills with poetry, and how can he take money from those true inspirations. For the same reason he was fired from the job after several warnings.

10. His sister Kausar Jahan was married to Sardar Malik, Bollywood composer since late 1940s till early 1960s.

11. He is the maternal uncle to Bollywood music directors – Anu Malik and Daboo Malik, and music show organizer Abu Malik.

12. He is the maternal granduncle to Amaal Malik, Armaan Malik and Anmol Malik, present generation of artists associated with Bollywood music.

13. Right from his debut movie Barsaat, he along with Shailendra worked with Shankar Jaikishen for all movies made by Raj Kapoor till 1971. After the death of Jaikishen and failure of Mera Naam Joker, Kapoor turned to other lyricists and composers, especially Laxmikant-Pyarelal. They worked together for one more and last time for Ram Teri Ganga Maili in 1985, the launch movie for Raj Kapoor’s son Rajiv Kapoor. He has also penned lyrics for Raj Kapoor movies tuned by other composers.

14. Raj Kapoor invited him to write the songs of Henna. But following Kapoor’s death, its composer Ravindra Jain (with whom he had previous outing for Raj Kapoor film – Ram Teri Ganga Maili) scrapped his three songs and added his own.

15. He published several poetry collections in Urdu and Hindi languages. According to him, both these languages are inseparable sisters.

16. He worked with S. D. Burman for two movies. Despite writing all the songs of iconic movie, Tere Ghar Ke Samne followed by Ziddi, they never worked together. In fact they did one more movie together in the 1970s – Deewangee in 1976. Sources say Hasrat penned the lyrics for Kishore-Lata duet, Pyar Jab Tera Mera. But its music has been credited to Ravindra Jain (if online sources are to be believed) Perhaps the music director might have completed the unfinished work of S. D. Burman who went to coma so unexpected and died in 1975.

17. Chhod Gaye Baalam for Barsaat was his second song as a lyricist and the first duet.

18. He wrote his popular song – Teri Pyari Pyari Soorat Ko from Sasural for his newly born son.

19. He, along with Shailendra and Shankar-Jaikishen used to spend a lot of time together, as they frequently worked together. On one such dance show in a foreign country, Hasrat Jaipuri noticed a lady with shiny costumes and accessories, and commented to Jaikishen, “Badan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue, E Jaane Tamanna Kidar Jaa Rahi Ho”. The composed who liked those wordings at once converted it to a tune and used for ‘Prince’ movie.  

20. His song & lyrics of ‘Main Kya Karoon Ram’ of Sangam remained in limelight for one special reason. Lata Mangeshkar is always specific about song lyrics, and when SJ tricked her to sing this song and she found it out, she broke ties with the composers and didn’t record any song with them for some time.

21. Hasrat Jaipuri worked with R. D. Burman for a single movie, Bhoot Bangla and penned all its 6 songs. It was actor Mehmood who forced the lyricist to work with the newcomer.

22. He has been nominated at Filmfare awards 6 times and won it twice. “Teri Pyari Pyari Surat” from Sasural, “Ae Gulbadan” from Professor, “Aji Rooth Kar Ab Kahan” from Arzoo, “Baharon Phool Barsao” from Suraj, “Dil Ke Jharoke Mein” from Brahmachari and “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana” from Andaz are those nominations. All these songs were tuned by Shankar Jaikishen duo.

23. He penned all songs of Ramlal’s Sehra (1963) and Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne (1964), except Aayiye Pathariye of Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne . Both the musical films were produced and directed by legendary V. Shantaram and his daughter Sandhya played lead roles in both. Interestingly less-known musician Ramlal composed music for only these 6 movies in his entire career, before he turned a producer in the 1960s. Hasrat worked with him for 1950s movie, Naqab Posh also, for which he penned three songs.

24. He handed over all his earnings to his wife and fully concentrated on his writings. His wife made clever investments in real estate, which helped them a lot during their bad days.

25. Hatya: The Murder (2004) was his last film as a lyricist, and the movie was released 5 years after his death.

Author’s note: When I completed this list of songs penned by Hasrat Jaipuri, I got really astonished with the wonderful collection of songs.
