Armaan Malik – Leading playback singer of Bollywood of new generation

Armaan Malik is an Indian playback singer, predominantly associated with Bollywood. He is also an actor though not successful, and a voice actor. Currently Armaan is one of the most sought male playback singers of Bollywood, with numerous chartbuster songs to his credit. He is the younger son of popular singer and music composer Daboo Malik and nephew of famous music director of 1990s – Anu Malik. He is the grandson of Sardar Malik – well known music composer of 1950s and early 1960s and grandnephew of Hasrat Jaipuri – celebrated Bollywood lyricist and Urdu poet. His elder brother Amaan Malik is also a popular singer and music composer, with whom he frequently collaborates. His cousin sister Anmol Malik (Anu Malik’s daughter) is also a playback singer, lyricist and composer, representing the third generation of musicians from the family.

Armaan Malik, born into a musical family in Mumbai in 1995, inherited music from her father and grandfather, both well-known music directors of Bollywood industry. His father has also worked as an anchor for Doordarshan TV shows in the late 1990s. His uncle Anu Malik is a big name in Bollywood music industry, who completely dominated the scene in the second half of 1990s and early 2000s. His second uncle Abu Malik is a composer and an organizer of live musical shows. His younger brother and cousin sister are also associated with the field of Bollywood music. He trained Hindustani music for about 10 years under Qadir Ghulam Mustafa Khan and Rita Kaul.

Armaan Malik started his singing career as a child singer in 2007 with the movie, Taare Zameen Par, and continued recording songs. He also recorded many jingles since then. He began his career as a voice actor in year 2010 before he switched on to playback singing. He dubbed for an English boy in My Name Is Khan, followed by radio version of Slumdog Millionaire for BBC Radio 1, for the character Salim. As a full-fledged adult playback singer, his first break was given by his brother through Jai Ho, which also marked Amaan’s debut as a music composer. The duo recorded three songs together. A couple of songs for Hate Story 3 helped him to rise to prominence, and there was no turning back after that.

Apart from Hindi, he also recorded film songs for Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Urdu, Gujarati, Bengali and Marathi languages. He released his first solo album – Krazy Konnection’ in 2014. Since 2015 he recorded many hit songs and rose to instant fame within a short interval of time. Apart from hit songs with his brother, he has recorded songs for A.R. Rahman, Salim-Sulaiman, Ilaiyaraaja, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Jeet Gannguli, Rochak Kohli, Sanjeev-Darshan, Meet Bros etc.

1. His family is related to Ghulam Hassan Shaggan, Pakistani classical music singer of the Gwalior Gharana.

2. His uncle Abu Malik is a composer best known as a businessman and an organizer of live shows in India and abroad with more than 10000 live shows to his credit. He has penned a book named ‘Rantings of a Madman‘ and is a contestant of Sony TV’s Bigg Boss Season – 13 in 2019.

3. He is the grandnephew of famous Urdu poet and lyricist, Hasrat Jaipuri. Her paternal grandmother is the sister of the popular poet.

4. His cousin brother Adaar Malik (Abu Malik’s son) is a standup comedian.

5. The brothers Amaal Malik and Armaan Malik sang the chartbuster song – Hua Hain Aaj Pehli Baar for Sanam Re, composed by the elder brother. Palak Muchhal is the female voice. The Goggle Song from Mubarakan is yet another song (aside Sonu Nigam, Neeti Mohan and Tulsi Kumar).

6. Chale Aana from De De Pyaar De is the first song for which Malik brothers collaborated with their father. The trio also worked together for the songs of ‘W’, a film scripted by Daboo Malik in 2014.

7. At the age of 9 he was one of the top 10 finalists of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs on Zee TV, and in 2019 judged reality shows like The Voice India Kids and The Voice.

8. He received scholarship from Berklee College of Music, Boston for his musical talents.

9. He is a recipient of Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent 2015.

10. He sang all the three songs of Salman Khan’s Jai Ho – Jai Ho, Tumko To Aana Hi Tha and Love You Till The End (House Mix), composed by Amaal Malik, the movie which marked Amaal’s debut as a music composer in Bollywood.

11. Salman Khan got him enrolled at a dance class, who launched the brothers through his movie, Jai Ho in 2014. In Khan’s opinion to become a complete performer, one needs to dance properly.

12. For his debut tour at the age of 21, he became the youngest Indian playback singer to perform at the SSE Arena in Wembley in UK.

13. He is a guitarist and piano player too.
