Anmol Malik – Playback singer, composer and lyricist of Bollywood

Anmol Malik is a well-known playback singer, composer and lyricist associated with Bollywood right now. She is the daughter of successful music composer Anu Malik, and granddaughter of Sardar Malik, Bollywood music composer of 1950s and early 1960s. Iconic lyricist and Urdu poet Hasrat Jaipuri is her great uncle. Her uncle Daboo Malik is a popular music director, TV host and screenwriter and her cousin brothers – Armaan Malik and Amaal Mallik (Daboo’s sons) are two well-established names of Bollywood music right now. The trio represents third generation of musicians/singers from their family. Her uncle Abu Malik is also a musician and organizer of live shows in India and abroad.

Anmol Malik, born into a musical family in Mumbai inherited music from her father and grandfather, both well-known music directors of Bollywood industry. She started off as a child playback singer at the age of 5 and recorded many songs composed by her father since mid-1990s. Diljale in 1996 composed by her father was her first recorded song, where she provided back vocals. It was followed by Jo Tum Kaho of Chota Chetan, Mujhe Maaf Karna of Biwi No: 1, Title track of Mela etc. Till early 2010s she continued recording songs with Anu Malik. She grew up listening to the music recordings of her father & singing, and also trained in Hindustani music from her grandfather.

She turned an adult singer with“Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Na Keejo” from Umrao Jaan (2006) composed by her father. “Talli” from the movie Ugly Aur Pagli (2008) composed by her father was her first hit song as a full-fledged singer. She also recorded the songs – Shut Up and Nachle for the movie. In 2010 she was one of the singers of the song – 10 on 10 for the movie, Pyar Impossible composed by a music composer other than her father. Salim-Sulaiman was the composer. After that she continued recording songs for different music directors.

Anmol Malik turned a music composer in 2017, and she also writes song lyrics. She composes music for movies, TV shows and music videos.  She released her first English single “Let Me Come Home” in 2017. She also released an English single “The Graduation“, for which she wrote lyrics and composed music too. She released two Hindi singles in 2018 – Jiya Na Jaye and Tum Hi Toh Ho. Lamhein is yet another popular single of Anmol, official adaption of Coldplay’s Paradise.

1. She is the grandniece of famous Urdu poet and lyricist, Hasrat Jaipuri. Her paternal grandmother is the sister of the popular poet.

2. Her family is related to Ghulam Hassan Shaggan, Pakistani classical music singer of the Gwalior Gharana.

3. Mujhe Maaf Karna of Biwi No: 1 is her first credited song as a playback singer for which she received a token payment and also a chocolate.

4. She studied Business, Film and Computer Science. She is a graduate of Cinematic Arts from USC School of Cinematic Arts, Los Angeles.

5. She has done a one-year course at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, California, followed by grades 1-5 in Music Theory in Piano from the Trinity College London.

6. She received Max Stardust Award Musical Singing Sensation (Female) for Agle Janam song of Umrao Jaan.

7. She used to write songs in her books since school days, and was more interested in song writing than singing and music. She started penning songs at the age of 13.

8. During her school days, once her father was called by her Chemistry teacher because when Anmol wrote songs instead of formulae in her book. But seeing this her father felt proud of her.

10. Her uncle Abu Malik is a composer best known as a businessman and an organizer of live shows in India and abroad with more than 10000 live shows to his credit. He has penned a book named ‘Rantings of a Madman‘ and is a contestant of Sony TV’s Bigg Boss Season – 13 in 2019.

11. Her cousin brother Adaar Malik (Abu Malik’s son) is a standup comedian.
