Alia Bhatt is my choice for the best female performer in 2016

Year 2016 witnessed many women-centric roles and biopics and majority of them met with box office success and critics’ appreciation also. Year 2016 also witnessed a few outstanding performances among females. Though Deepika Padukone is the reigning queen of Bollywood, 2016 passes by without even a single release by Padukone, for the first time in actress’ career since her debut in 2007. Definitely Sonam Kapoor through Neerja gave a solid performance in the first quarter of 2016, and she stayed in the top till Dear Zingadi got released in November. Yes, my choice for the best female performer of the year 2016 goes to Alia Bhatt for Dear Zingadi. Also read: My choice of top 10 movies of the year.

Alia Bhatt delivered three hits in 2016

Since her Bollywood debut through ‘Student of the year at a young age, Alia always remained in limelight. Her role in Highway was highly appreciated though the movie was not a box office hit. Except Shaandar, all the movies of Alia emerged as box office hits and she continued her winning streak in 2016 as well. Her role as a Bihari migrant in the controversial film Udta Punjab was well appreciated by critics.

While she appeared in a de-glamorous role in Udta Punjab, she showcased her talent as a modern and outgoing girl in Kapoor and Sons, a role that well fits Alia’s character. Both the movies were box office hits too. But she turned the biggest star of the year through Kaira – the woman-centric character of the film, Dear Zindagi. She showcased her acting skills through different shades of a woman she portrayed in the film, and Kaira is definitely one of the most powerful and adorable female roles of Bollywood in the recent times, perhaps after ‘Geet’ character portrayed by Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, if not taken into account roles based on real incidents. Also read: Top 5 Performances of Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Though Shah Rukh played an impressive role in the film it was Alia who steal audience’ heart! It’s not an easy task to handle the matured Kaira with different traits, and Alia nailed it perfect through her flawless and effortless work. Definitely Alia Bhatt in Dear Zindagi is the solid performance of the year 2016. Also read: My choice for best Bollywood actor of the year.

Sonam Kapoor also deserves special mention

Sonam has been earlier seen in Bollywood films as a glamorous role, and has been criticized for lack of acting skills. She better remained in limelight for her fashion quotient and controversial statements. She mostly played less-significant roles throughout her career. But through a single role as Neerja Bhanot, she erased all. Through her outstanding role in Neerja, she rose to the main lead of talented actresses of Bollywood which she truly deserves. Sonam was highly appreciated for portraying the real life role of Neerja onscreen.

Other outstanding performances of the year

Year 2016 gave some good moments to Anushka Sharma’s career as well. She played lead role in the biggest hit of the year – Sultan opposite Salman Khan. She stole audience’s hearts through her role as Alizeh Khan in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. She was paired opposite two big stars of Bollywood – Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor for the first time in 2016, and both the movies entered 100 crore club.
Aishwarya Rai had an impressive career in 2016. She remained in spotlight for her glamorous and sizzling avatar in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and she appealed audience through her de-glamorous role in Sarbjit. Vidya Balan got noticed for her female centric role in Kahani-2 and supporting role in Te3n. Radhika Apte in Phobia, Taapsee Pannu and her friends – Andrea Tariang and Kirti Kulhari in Pink, Swara Bhaskar in Nil Battey Sannata, Diana Penty in Happy Bhag Jayegi and Kareena Kapoor in Udta Punjab are other stunning female performances of the year. I also loved newcomer Mawra Hocane in Sanam Teri Kasam. Definitely she made an impressive Bollywood debut.
