Bidipta Chakraborty – Bengali film, television and stage actress

Bidipta Chakraborty is a Bengali film, television and stage actress. She has also appeared in short films and web series. She is married into a family of filmmakers of three generations, while she belongs to an actor family. She is the wife of noted Bengali filmmaker – Birsa Dasgupta. Her father-in-law Raja Dasgupta and brother-in-law Ribhu Dasgupta too are filmmakers, while her grandfather-in-law Harisadhan Dasgupta was a pioneer of Bengali documentary cinema. Her younger sister Sudipta Chakraborty is a national award winning actress. As a stage actress, Bidipta is best known for Debesh Chattopadhyay’s play Brain. She is known for accepting roles of wide range.

Bidipta Chakraborty was born in Kolkata, West Bengal in 1980. Her father Biplab Ketan Chakraborty was a veteran theatre artist and film actor (passed away in November 2018). Her mother Dipali and sister Bidisha are dancers. She started her professional career through theater before joining film and television industry. She was associated with theater group, Theatrewala, till it was disbanded. She started getting offers from movies, and she completely switched over the medium. However she returned to theatre after 11 years. – Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002) was her first movie, where she played a passenger of the bus in which lead actors were travelling.

She played the role of Saswata Chatterjee’s wife in 2003 movie – Abar Aranye. The movie marked her debut in Bengali cinema. Ami Adu, Apu and Purba Paschim Dakshin are among her noted works in Bengali cinema. She has been a part of TV since early 2010s and still active in this field. She was first seen in Keya Patar Nouko in 2011, followed by Jol Nupur, Ishti Kutum, Byomkesh, Chokher Tara Tui, Mahanayak, Kusum Dola, Phagun Bou, Bajlo Tomar Alor Benu, Shubho Drishti, Alo Chhaya etc. She plays character roles on both big and small screen.

Bidipta Chakraborty – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. She was a member of the last play of the theatre troupe, Theatrewala, “Baghu Manna“.

2. Her screen pairing with Sujan Mukhopadhyay has been well received.

3. Though she is best known as Bengali actress, she has been a part of English movies like Mr and Mrs Iyer and Bollywood movie – Chalo Let’s Go.

4. As she married Bengali filmmaker – Birsa Dasgupta, she is a member of a family of filmmakers.

5. Her grandmother-in-law Sonali Dasgupta was a Bengali screenwriter. She later married Italian film director, Roberto Rossellini.

6. Her mother-in-law Chaitali Dasgupta is an actress and TV presenter, associated with Bengali entertainment industry. She designed wedding sari for Bidipta, and also wedding card and thank you card.
