Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma)

Ingredients for Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma):

1. Rice flakes – 300 gm

2. Coconut scrapped – 2 table spoons

3. Salt – A little

4. Ginger, garlic and green chillies chopped – 1.5 tea spoon

5. Mustard – A little

6. Coconut oil – As required

7. Carrot, beans and cauliflower chopped – 50 gms

8. Shallots – 5 nos:

9. Curry leaves – As needed

How to prepare Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma)?

1. Fry rice flakes in a thick bottomed pan and keep aside.

2. Add oil to the pan and sputter mustard seeds.

3. Add chopped shallots, ginger, garlic and green chillies.

4. Saute for a few moments and add chopped vegetables and salt.

5. Add sufficient water and rice flakes.

6. Mix the ingredients well and close the lid.

7. Cook for 10 minutes.

8. Finally add scrapped coconut and mix the ingredients well.

9. Serve hot.

Ingredients for Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma) – Recipe 2:

1. White rice flakes – 3 cups

2. Oil – 1 big spoon

3. Cumin seeds – 1 small spoon

4. Potato chopped into small pieces – 1 cup

    Salt – For taste

   Turmeric powder – ¼ small spoon

    Water – As required

5. Coconut scrapped – 3/4 cup

    Sev – 3/4 cup

    Coriander leaves chopped – 3 big spoons

    Cashews fried – ¼ cup

6. Lemon – 1

How to prepare Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma) – Recipe 2?

1. Sprinkle a little water to rice flakes and soak it without forming lumps.

2. Heat oil in a pan and sputter cumin seeds.

3. Add ingredients no: 4 and cook till water content is fully absorbed.

4. Add rice flakes and ingredients no: 5 to it and mix well.

5. Serve with cut lemon pieces.

Note: You can also serve rice flakes and mixture of ingredients no: 5 separately. You can mix as you want, while eating.

Ingredients for Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma) – Recipe 3:

1. White rice flakes (aval) – 2 cups

2. Oil – 3 big spoons

3. Mustard – ½ small spoon

4. Cumin seeds – ¼ small spoon

5. Turmeric powder – ¼ small spoon

6. Onions chopped in the same size as rice flakes – 1

7. Green chilli – 1, chopped

8. Salt – For taste

9. Potato chopped in the same size as rice flakes – ½ cup

10. Lemon juice – From ½ lemon

11. Coconut scrapped – ½ cup

12. Coriander leaves chopped – 3 big spoons

13. Roasted cashews, sev – As required

How to prepare Aval Upma (Rice Flakes Upma) – Recipe 3?

1. Put rice flakes in water and drain water quickly.

2. Heat oil in a pan and sputter cumin seeds and mustard.

3. Add onions, turmeric powder and green chillies, and sauté the contents. It should not turn brown.

4. Add salt and potatoes and cook till it’s done.

5. Add rice flakes and lemon juice.

6. Reduce the flame and close the lid.

7. When it’s done, add coconut and take off the flame.

8. If rice flakes turn dry, sprinkle a little more water.

9. Decorate with coriander leaves, sev and cashews.
