Chitchat with Godha girl – Wamiqa Gabbi

The Chandigarh girl Wamiqa Gabbi stole Malayalam film audience through her role as Aditi Singh, a wrestler in the recent release, Godha. Though she is a north Indian, she is a familiar face in south India and has appeared in Tamil and Telugu movies before her debut in Malayalam films. Her role as a teenager in Bollywood for the movie, Sixteen in 2013 was also well-received. Here is a small chat with Godha Girl.

Her name is Arabic

Though Wamiqa Gabbi is a Punjabi girl, her name is Arabic. Wamiqa means Goddess of Wind. A rare name, a bit complicated in character too, Wamiqa is a self-confident girl. Drawing and singing are other passions of Wamiqa.

Trained wrestling for 6 months

Wamiqa Gabbi played the role of a wrestler in Godha. For that she took training in the art for 6 months to prepare for the role. She trained wrestling daily and also got minor injuries during practices. Yet she enjoyed everything. After the film shooting, the wrestling practice made her more confident.

Started as a child artist doing minor roles

She has played minor roles in Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal as a child artist. Later she took a break to complete her art studies and returned to silver screen as a heroine. She played lead role in Bollywood film, Sixteen and also worked in a couple of Punjabi movies before she made her south Indian debut. Currently she has many south Indian projects in pipeline.

Action Heroine – Her dream role

It was always Wamiqa’s dream to do an action film. It’s very rare in Indian film industry for female actors to get action roles. In the movie Godha, she loved the wrestling scene wearing sari. For the movie, majority of her dialogues were in Hindi and English. Yet she learnt a few Malayalam dialogues for fun.

Her beauty secret

She doesn’t spend extra time for beauty care, but eats only healthy food. She prefers to remain positive always, and uses less makeup. Her favourite costume is a simple jeans. She has a huge collection of caps and rings, and never misses to buy her favourite caps during travels.

Friendship

Wamiqa loves friendship and treasures relations too. She has a friends’ circle in Punjab and loves to be in a funny mood in the midst of friends. Now she has got a few friends from Malayalam film industry too which she gained through the movie. Aju Vargheese was very funny in film sets and the whole team was like a family – says Wamiqa.  

Good opinion about Malayalis

She is overwhelmed with the hospitality of Keralites. Film shooting was just like a campus life for Wamiqa, and she got support from Tovina Thomas, Renji Panicker and the rest team. They also teased her for her ignorance of Malayalam.

A typical Punjabi Kudi

She belongs to a traditional Punjabi family, a joint family with 9 members. Everyone resides in her hometown of Punjab. Her father Govardhan Gabbi is a Punjabi writer. Currently she is single and no marriage plans yet.
