Year 2016 has been associated with a few biopics and woman-centric roles which drew attention most. Yet a few actors managed to remain in limelight and got some notable roles as well. Among the leading male stars, Shah Rukh Khan appeared in two different avatars in Fan and Dear Zingadi, and this time he earned critics’ appreciation too. Salman Khan too was seen in a different avatar, and his acting skills in ‘Sultan’ got appreciated.

Irrfan Khan, Randeep Hooda, Sushant Singh Rajput, Abhay Deol, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranbir Kapoor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shahid Kapoor and not the least – Akshay Kumar too delivered some of the impressive performances this year. Yet my choice for the best actor of the year is Amitabh Bachchan who showcased his acting skills in a series of three thrillers this year. After a shining performance in ‘Piku’ last year, Amitabh continued his success streak in 2016 with one of the early commercial hits of the year – Wazir. It was followed by two more thrillers – Te3n and Pink, and he was praised by critics for his performance. One of the senior most actors of Bollywood, he proved once again – He is the real Shehanshah of Bollywood. Also read: Top 10 movies of 2016.

Wazir – one of the early hits of Bollywood in 2016 also starred Farhan Akhtar, and the movie received positive response from critics. It was just a beginning of Amitabh Bachchan thrillers of the year. Te3n is my personal favourites among the three, though the movie fared only average at box office. The script had several shades similar to Wazir and was a gripping thriller. Also read: Thrillers of Big B in 2016 with a common twist.
‘Pink’ is definitely one of the big movies of the year. The film with a powerful script and strong social message also had a handful of stunning performances by its lead and supporting star cast. Though Amitabh’s role as lawyer Deepak Sehgal received mixed response, the movie emerged as a huge blockbuster. The courtroom drama film was directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, and starred Taapsee Pannu in female lead role.
Other top performances of the year 2016
Jabra Song from Fan
Shah Rukh Khan also remains my hot favourite of the year. It was a delight to watch Shah Rukh Khan of 1990s through his breath-taking performance in Fan. Though the movie without songs was different from SRK potboilers, his performance was widely appreciated by critics and fans. He also stole audience’s hearts through his extended cameo role in Dear Zindagi starring Alia Bhatt. Also read: Top female performer of Bollywood in 2016.
2016 is a comeback year for Ranbir Kapoor who was highly praised for his lead role in E Dil Hai Mushkil. Sushant Singh Rajput in M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Akshay Kumar in Airlift, Manoj Bajpayee in Aligarh and Traffic, Shahid Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh in Udta Punjab and Abhay Deol in Happy Bhag Jayegi are other note-worthy roles of the year. Harshvardhan Rane made an impressive Bollywood debut this year through Sanam Teri Kasam. Salman Khan’s performance in Sultan also earned him positive reviews.
Conclusion
In terms of box office hits, Salman Khan rules the list with Sultan which earned 300 crore+ this year. All the three releases of Akshay Kumar – Airlift, Houseful 2 and Rustom also entered 100-crore club. I chose Amitabh Bachchan for the roles he chose this year, impressive performance and critical appreciation he received.
Big B is wisely choosing good roles in the recent times, and most of them emerged as box office hits, and earns him multiple awards also. Big B is a legend, and a role model to all. Though he has passed age 70+, he is still active with his work, and delivered some of the impressive performances in the past 10-12 years. Three National awards since 2005 is enough to prove that ‘age is just a number’ to the greatest actor of Bollywood.
Most recently I got opportunity to watch him at a temple celebration in my local town, and I was bowled down by his personality and speech. Wish you all the best, sir. We are waiting for more ‘Amitabh’ surprises.
Dangal is not released yet, and I am waiting for new surprises of Aamir too.
