6 Tricks to make your kid love Mathematics

If you ask a kid about his favourite subjects, he may choose English, Science or Social Science. But what about Mathematics? Only a few kids choose mathematics as their favourite subject. Most kids stay at a distance from Mathematics since younger age. If so, certain tricks can bring your kids close to the subject. Here are a few easy steps to learn Mathematics.

Make Mathematics a fun game – You can include mathematics into the games played by kids at school or home. You can start off with simple games, and slowly make them interesting. By such practical methods, you can teach him Mathematics easily too. In all sorts, Mathematics taught through practical methods gave more results than teaching him by paper and pen. Snake and ladder game can teach him basic arithmetic easier. He can easily learn addition and subtraction through this game. Building blocks and Number cards are a few more.

Teach Mathematics while doing daily chores – You can ask your kids to assist you while you are in kitchen. While cooking, you can teach him measurements, count of cooker whistles, oven’s timing etc. Next time, it’s his duty to tell the measurements, cooker whistle count etc. For example, ‘Turn of cooker after 5 whistles. Now it’s three whistles. How many needed more?’ The kid easily learn simple arithmetic this manner, and answer, ‘it’s two more whistles’. Such simple questions can teach him mathematics. Not only that, he will try to link the subject with real life, and understands the significance of Mathematics and how important it is in daily life.

In between journeys – You can teach him the concept of distance and its measurement in kilometres when you set on a journey. Tell him how much distant the place is. From meter reading, ask him to calculate distance to be covered to reach the destination. This is an easy method to teach him the basic concepts of subtraction as well. How much metres together make one kilometer, total number of minutes in one hour, approximate time to cover a particular distance – some of the simple but important things can be taught this way.

Teach while shopping – Kids always enjoy shopping and if you are able to convert these hours to a few teaching hours, it’s really worth. Tell him the price of the purchased products, discounts, total number of items from each section etc. You can easily teach him, the measurement of each product for homely needs while shopping. You can ask him to pay the bill by giving the money. Just ensure that he has counted the money correctly and has also got the balance at cash counter.

Easy method to learn multiplication table – Teach him the basics of multiplication first, and later teach him multiplication tables. Tell him that it’s a simple trick to do multiplication easily. If you are able to convince him that learning multiplication tables can help him to do big calculations easily, he will be interested in by-hearting it. After all everyone loves shortcuts which save time and energy! He might feel it to be magical when he starts learning the tables.

Thief and police game – For elder kids, introduce questions to be policemen and answers as thieves. You should teach him that policeman can catch thieves only if he takes the right path, so are the steps and procedure in a lengthy mathematical problem. Very easily he will make mathematics his companion. It’s the same procedure followed by the genius Einstein.

For every problem there is a solution and it’s most important how we choose a desirable path, feasible solutions and reach there. Same is the case of Mathematics subject as well. After all Mathematics is not a difficult subject as many people imagine!
