Vellarikka – Vanpayar Thoran (Cucumber – Kidney Beans Thoran)

Ingredients for Vellarikka – Vanpayar Thoran (Cucumber – Kidney Beans Thoran):

1. Van payar (Brown peas also known as Kidney Beans) – ½ cup

2. Salt – As required

3. Cucumber – 250 gm

4. Coconut oil – 1 big spoon

5. Mustard – ½ small spoon

    Red chillies whole – 2, cut into two

6. Scrapped coconut – 1 cup

    Turmeric powder – 1 small spoon

    Garlic – 2 cloves

    Cumin seeds – A pinch

    Curry leaves – 1 stalk

    Red chilly – 1

How to prepare Vellarikka – Vanpayar Thoran (Cucumber – Kidney Beans Thoran)?

1. Soak peas overnight and cook adding sufficient water and salt.

2. Cut cucumber into small square pieces.

3. Heat oil in a pan and sauté mustards and chillies. Keep it aside.

4. In the same pan, sauté cucumber pieces for a while adding salt and cook in low flame with lid closed.

5. Crush together ingredients no: 6 and add to cooked cucumber pieces along with cooked kidney beans.

6. Cook in low flame for two minutes with lid closed.

7. Add sauted mustard and red chillies to it, mix well and put the flame off. Water content should be fully absorbed.
