Pongal is a very common breakfast dish of Tamil Nadu. It’s prepared in different variants. Here I present a simple rice pongal, adding green gram dal and seasoned with ghee and cashews.

Ingredients for Pongal:

1. Raw rice (Pachari) – 1 cup

    Green gram daal (cherupayar paripp) – ½ cup

2. Asafoetida fried and powdered – ½ small spoon

    Green chillies – 2, split into two

    Ginger grated – ½ small spoon

3. Water – 2.5 cups                                                    

    Salt – As required

4. Ghee – One big spoon

5. Pepper – 1 big spoon

    Cumin seeds – 1 small spoon

6. Cashews fried – 3 big spoons

    Coriander leaves – To decorate

    Curry leaves – 2 stalks

How to prepare Pongal?

1. Mix well ingredients listed as 1, 2 and 3 and cook in a pressure cooker.

2. Heat ghee in a pan and sauté ingredients no: 5.

3. Pour it to the cooked rice and mix well.

4. Now transfer the pongal to serving plates and decorate using ingredients 6.
