Koyla Piece Rice (Vaazhakoomb Rice)

In this main course rice dish, Vazhakoomb (Banana flower) is used for layering, and is a bit different in preparation as well.

Ingredients for Koyla Piece Rice:

1. Kaima rice – 1 cup

2. Ghee – 2 big spoons

3. Boiling water – 1 ¼ cup

    Coconut milk – 1 cup

    Salt – As required

4. Banana flower chopped – 1 cup

    Coconut oil – 1 small spoon

    Turmeric powder – A little

5. Coconut oil – 1 big spoon

    Mustard – ¼ tsp

    Urud daal (Black gram daal) – 1 small spoon

6. Chilli powder – ½ small spoon

    Turmeric powder – ¼ small spoon

    Garlic crushed – 6 cloves

    Coconut scrapped – 3 big spoons

    Curry leaves – 2 stalks

    Salt – For taste

7. Curry leaves fried in coconut oil – To garnish

How to prepare Koyla Piece Rice?

1. Wash and later soak rice for half an hour.

2. Heat ghee in an urli, and add rice to it. Fry it well.

3. Add 1 ¼ cup boiling water to it, coconut milk and salt and mix well.

4. Cook in low flame with lid closed. Water content should be fully absorbed.

5. Add coconut oil and turmeric powder to chopped banana flower, rub it well and wash it well.

6. Heat oil in a pan and sauté ingredients no: 5.

7. Then add coconut flower, along with ingredients no: 6.

8. Mix the contents and cook it well.

9. Remove half of the rice from urli, and spread the cooked banana flower as a layer.

10. Now layer the remaining rice on the top.

11. Add fried curry leaves on the top, close the lid and heat in low flame for a few minutes before you serve.
