What’s Common Between Vidya and Deepika?
Deepika Padukone and Vidya Balan – two lady superstars of present day Bollywood. Both these actresses are enough talented to carry a film on their shoulders. In the male dominated film field, only less female actors have born belonging to this category. Yes, both carry many striking resemblances in their professional lives. What else is common in both?
Choosy over film scripts and roles, and make their own choices
Both rose to stardom in the early 2010s and since then they are bold enough to demand changes in film script as they wish. Thus they form a rare breed of lucky actresses of Bollywood of course. Throughout the ages, we have always witnessed hero-centric films most where scripts are written highlighting men’s roles. But both these actresses give new definitions to cinema and have definitely given positive signs to Hindi cinema, and both have essayed several powerful women-centric roles onscreen.
Worked less with super stars of Bollywood
It’s always said, if an actress gets opportunity to work with Superstars of Bollywood she gets a break enough to groom her career. But both these actresses have proved it wrong. Since 1990s most of the successful divas of Bollywood have exclusively worked with Khans of Bollywood, and it helped them a lot in their career making as well. But through their outstanding career records both these ladies proved this equation to be a myth. Both these ladies have worked with less number of movies of Super Khans of Bollywood, I mean – SRK, Salman or Aamir, the only exception being SRK-Deepika combination which regularly appeared over the years.
Less work with Khans
Deepika made a magic entry to Bollywood through Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and later she worked with him for the movies – Chennai Express and Happy New Year. Though an SRK movie gave Deepika the first break to Bollywood, it’s only her hard work and dedication which placed her at a place where she is now. Quite surprising she has never shared screen space with Salman Khan, Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan, the biggest stars of Bollywood. Yet her place in Bollywood is equal to the superstars of Bollywood.
Same is the case of Vidya Balan as well. She shared screen space with SRK for a single song sequence for the movie – Heyy Baby. Similar to Deepika, she has never worked with Salman Khan, Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan who rules Bollywood box office. It’s definitely a striking similarity between these two actresses, for which they can themselves feel proud.
Both are South Indians, but concentrated their carrier in Bollywood
The ladies who rule Bollywood right now are south Indians. Vidya belongs to Palakkad of Kerala, while Deepika belongs to Bangalore. Both the ladies tried their luck with south Indian films before moving to Bollywood. Like many south Indian actresses earlier, they too ruled Bollywood as queens. Hema Malini, Vaijayanthimala, Sri Devi, Rekha and Aishwarya Rai are a few more names from south who are known for their acting skills as well as physical beauty.
Handful of women-centric roles
Though both these actresses have given hits and flops, and often witnessed setbacks during the early phase of their careers, the most powerful women-centric roles in the recent times belong to both these ladies for sure. Now powerful scripts are written for them and producers have confidence in both these ladies as well. I now remember the powerful era of offbeat movies of late 1970s and early 1980s, when Shabana Azmi and Smita Patel played numerous priceless woman characters on screen. So we can really hope that magic era is back to screen, if both these ladies really feel so. All the very best for both – Deepika and Vidya.
Conclusion
I would also like to add one more big name to this list. It is National award winning actress Tabu. She along with Shah Rukh Khan made a brief appearance as a couple for the film, Saathiya. Except that she has never worked in a full-fledged role opposite Khans. She has worked with Salman Khan for the movies – Jeet, Biwi No: 1, Jai Ho and Hum Saat Saat Hai, though not as a pair. She played a cameo role in Aamir’s Fanaa. Apart from Vidya and Deepika, Tabu is also among the list of those successful actresses who gained recognition as a good actress though never worked with Khans.
