Top 50 Bollywood Hit Songs of Shammi Kapoor

Yahoo Star Shammi Kapoor – the original Rockstar of Hindi cinema, best known for his histrionics, energetic dancing style and unique mannerisms redefined the romantic image of heroes on Bollywood screen in the 1960s. He owns a huge fan following crowd till now, and is best remembered for his songs, though he owns many successful films to his credit. When it comes to romance, Shammi Kapoor will always remain one among the top stars, and his flirting songs and scenes are loved by female audience most. Perhaps in the history of Indian cinema, maximum number of flirting and teasing numbers might have been filmed on this actor, whose all song sequences are instant hits. In an era of soft tracks mostly based on Indian classical music and instruments, Shammi’s rock and fast tracks also gained equal popularity. In fact his songs put the basement to Western influence in Indian music in the 1960s, and that’s why he is definitely India’s first rock star.

I want to add something here. Though a Keralite, Shammi Kapoor songs made me listen to Bollywood songs since by childhood, and songs of Shammi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna drew me to Hindi music and I became an ardent fan of old Hindi songs. As a child in the 1980s, when I used to watch songs on Doordarshan, Shammi ji’s style attracted me a lot. After all among all old heroes who mostly stayed calm and quiet onscreen, he was ‘naughty’ and dances a lot, and I can’t find a reason why kids don’t love him. His songs were brilliantly sung by Rafi and he filled the screen with his presence and magic. Then why not love him? Shammi Kapoor songs played a magnificent role in shaping Bollywood music in the 1960s, absolutely.

Earlier I have posted a few articles on Shammi Kapoor, and beneath this column, you can find Shammi Kapoor gallery. Click on the images to read. In this column I shall present 50 of my favourite Shammi Kapoor songs. Needless to say, apart from a very few songs, most of them exclusively belong to singer Mohammed Rafi and quite a few his career best songs. An invisible energy fills his voice whenever he sings for Shammi Kapoor, voice modulation is different too, and that’s why Rafi’s songs for this actor look entirely different from those he sings for other actors. As most of the songs were composed by Shankar-Jaikishen, lyrics were mostly penned by Hasrat Jaipuri, followed by Shailendra. I have been forced to exclude some of my favourite Shammi Kapoor songs from the list when I reduced his best songs to best 50, and hence have listed a few more songs beneath the list. I also excluded some popular female solos filmed on Shammi Kapoor, such as Aaja Aaja Aaye Bahar, Thandi Thandi Hawa Mein Dil Lal Jaaye etc.

1. Yahoo from Junglee  – I would like to begin the list with the movie and song which helped Shammi Ji to rose to stardom. Though he has stayed as hero of Bollywood since mid-1950s and earned a few hits as well, it was Junglee in 1961 which gave him the real stardom he was waiting for. His style was far advanced in the era of social dramas, and he stayed in the top slot of most sought actors till the end of the decade. His gaining weight also adversely affected his career. He later moved to character roles. Junglee marked the acting debut of actress Saira Bhanu. Also read: Actress who debut opposite Shammi Kapoor. Junglee song was composed by Shankar-Jaikishen, written by Hasrat Jaipuri and sung by none other than Rafi.

2. Ehsaan Tera Hoga from JungleeThis top romantic song of 1960s had two solo versions, one in Rafi’s voice and the second one in Lata Mangeshkar, filmed on its lead pair. Rafi’s song became more popular.

3. Dil Saara Gusara Tore Angana from Junglee It’s the only duet in the album consisting of 8 songs. In Rafi and Lata’s voices, Shammi Kapoor and Saira Bhanu gave full justification to this song. Ai Ai Aa Suku Suku is yet another popular Rafi solo from Junglee.

4. E Gulbadan from Professor Actress Kalpana is best remembered for the hit film Professor, where she shared screen space with Shammi Kapoor, and all its songs were very popular. It was her debut movie too. This particular song is my personal favourite too. All the songs were composed by Shankar Jaikishan, for which he bagged the prestigious best music composer award. Both Mohammed Rafi, who rendered his voice and Hasrat Jaipuri who penned the lyrics earned a Filmfare nomination in respective categories too.

5. Main Chali Mein Chali from Professor This duet in Mohammad Rafi & Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was filmed on Kalpana and Shammi Kapoor and penned by Shailendra. Most of us often get confused its lyrics with yet another Lata song from Padosan released later. Am I not right? Aawaz Deke Humein Tum Bulao is yet another popular duet of the same singing pair from this movie. The movie included a rare duet of Mangeshkar sisters – Hamra Gaon Koi Ayegaa.

mein chali rafi

6. Khuli Palak Mein Jhoota Gussa of Professor As stated above, Shankar-Jaikishen earned Filmfare award for its compositions, and songs were extremely popular too. This romantic comedy was a huge hit and Shammi Kapoor bagged Filmfare nomination in the best actor category too. The movie included two solos of Rafi – Khuli Palak and E Gulbadan. Shailendra penned the lyrics.

7. Badan Pe Sitare from Prince This sensuous song in Rafi’s voice was filmed on Vyjayanthimala and Shammi, and is a party number. We can see Shammiji trying to woo his heroine in this song, and he finally succeeds. As usual soundtrack was composed by the Shankar Jaikishan duo and sung by Rafi. Hasrat Jaipuri penned its very popular lyrics. The movie also included some chartbusters such as Thandi Thandi Hawa Mein, Muquabla Humse and Nazar Mein Bijli Ada Mein Shole.

8. Deewana Mujhsa Nahin from Teesri Manzil – Teesri Manzil definitely can be counted among the top 10 albums of R. D. Burman, no doubt! Music was the real strength of this musical hit, and you can’t find even a weak track. This solo track featuring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh was sung by none other than Rafi. Lyrics for all the six tracks of the music album were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. It was also the last Hussain film in which Mohammed Rafi sang all the songs, and by the era of 1970s Kishore dominated the scene and tunes were almost composed by R. D. Burman himself.

Teesri Manzil is the only film composed by Burman for Shammi Kapoor during his glorious era as the romantic hero. They later associated for the films – Manoranjan and Shalimar. By then, Shammi Ji lost his Midas touch in Bollywood, and started working in supporting roles. Burman has also worked in a few movies of Kapoor in the 1980s, where he played character roles. If you make of a list of popular works of Shammi and Burman together, sadly only Teesri Manzil can get into this list. But Teesri Manzil always finds its position among the best 5 works of Pancham da, no doubt.

Despite the songs of Teesri Manzil became extremely popular, they never worked together in Shammi’s peak phase in Bollywood. But the film marked the beginning of Nasir Husain’s collaboration with R. D. Burman, and duo later gave countless chartbusters to music fans. Nasir was keen to assign the job of music department to a youngster, and he managed to convince Shammi Kapoor as well. The songs were already recorded, and when Nasir made Shammi listening to the tunes, he started dancing.

9. O Haseena from Teesri Manzil  – It’s one of the top items ever pictured on Helen, and Shammi Kapoor is also seen dancing along with her. Herman Benjamin choreographed the dance steps. The duet was sung by Asha Bhosle and Rafi. The movie included 6 tracks – 2 solos sung by Rafi and rest four duets recorded in Asha Bhosle and Rafi’s voice. R. D created its high octave songs with a blend of rock, jazz, Latino and a twist of his own unique traits.

10. Tumne Mujhe from Teesri Manzil  It’s one of my most favourite Shammi Kapoor songs always, definitely one of the top romantic solos sung by the legend, Mohammed Rafi, but quite surprisingly composed not by SJ, but by very young R. D. Burman. As a music composer, Teesri Manzil is R. D’s first successful work, and almost all its songs are extremely popular even today. The charming star is performing this soft solo in a romantic ada before audience, and Asha Parekh is also present with tears in her eyes.

11. O Mere Sona Re from Teesri Manzil The song was one of the earliest chartbuster hits of Asha Bhosle – the song which introduced Asha is a new Avatar, best known for her association with Pancham da, whom she married later. Perhaps it’s the most popular song belonging to the album. It’s the first successful association of Asha Bhosle & R. D. Burman, a time when Asha was mostly associated with O. P. Nayyar tunes. Who forecasted then, the duo is to conquer Hindi cinema the next decade and will become life partners! The song featuring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh was lovely pictured also, and still remembered by their fans. After the death of R. D. Burman, Asha Bhosle recorded its remixed version for the album – Huzoor – E – Ala, the song revived by Lesle Lewis. Also read: Top 20 Asha solos composed by Burman.

12. Aaja Aaja Mein Hoon from Teesri Manzil – The movie featured two of the rock numbers with heavy western music instruments and dance steps choreographed by Herman Benjamin, and both became extremely popular dance numbers of the era of 1960s. Asha Parekh and Shammi Kapoor were seen doing unique western dance steps, and the duet was sung by Asha Bhosle and Rafi. Though R. D has given music to less number of Shammi movies, compositions of Teesri Manzil marked the beginning of new era of R. D.

teesri manzil13. Budtameez Kaho Ya Kaho Janwar of Budtameez Most of his film titles are unique – Junglee, Janwar, Budtameez, Bluff Master etc, which pictures him as a bad guy or teasing boy. He has been extremely popular with these titles among his female fans also. In this particular song too, Kapoor is seen teasing his heroine Sadhana. Music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan, and lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri.

14. An Evening In Paris from An Evening In Paris The title song is shown during the title credits of the film, and Shammi is seen in a dashing avatar. Shankar Jaikishan composed all its songs and lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri, except Raat Ke Humsafar song. This particular song was written by Shailendra.

It would be a real surprising to many viewers, the song was shot in St Pauli, the famous entertainment district in Hamburg in Germany, and not in Paris as shown in the film. The song was mostly shot on Reeperbahn Street and some scenes include Cafe Keese, a famous restaurant & hotel, and Moulin Rouse. Of course, there are a few scenes of Paris between the stanzas of the song and during interlude music. When the movie was released in the 1960s in the post-independent era, Indians were not familiar with foreign locations as we were today. As technology has advanced far wide now, while we try to trace foreign spots through google and other travel sites, it looks so odd to see Shammi Ji singing “An Evening in Paris” on the streets of Hamburg.

15. Akele Akele from An Evening In Paris Sharmila Tagore was seen as an extremely glamorous doll in this song, and Shammi’s distinct style and Rafi’s magical voice made this song an instant chartbuster.

16. Raat Ke Humsafar from An Evening in Paris  – This soul-stirring duet was sung by Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Raat Ke Humsafar is my top pick from the album which includes different genres of tunes. The beautiful pair Sharmila Tagore-Shammi Kapoor worked early for the movie ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ which marked Sharmila’s Bollywood debut. Both these movies are extremely popular for ever-lasting songs.

17. Aasman Se from An Evening In Paris Sharmila was seen flaunting in a bikini for this particular song, which was not quite usual of movies in the 1960s. Apart from the hit songs, the movie also grabbed attention from public when she was posed in a bikini for Filmfare magazine. Shammi is seen dangling from a helicopter in a crazy mood as usual. Aasman Se Aaya Farista song was shot in Beirut as a part of the story. Hoga Tumse Kal Bhi Samna – the scooter song was shot completely on the outskirts of Beirut, the place then known as the Paris of the East.

18. Diwane Ka Naam To Poochho of An Evening in Paris The movie is known for its fantastic shooting locations of Paris, which gave a wonderful foreign trip to Indian audience. Shammi is seen in a teasing mood in this song, and Rafi also gave complete justice to this song, shot in different locations of France. Some shots of the French Countryside being shot in Lebanon, at least three songs were shot there.

The movie also included one more Rafi solo – Mera Dil Hai Tera (Jab Se Hai Hum Dil Badla). Quite interestingly the song was shot in three continents. It starts off with Beirut, then some shots of Paris in between, third stanza in Beirut and finally to Niagara Falls in Canada. Charles de Gaulle Avenue on seafront with tall colorful buildings was shown in the first stanza of the song. Sacre Coeur (Cathedral on Montmartre) and column at Place Vendome are also shown in flashes in the song in between.

19. Kabhi Hum Ne Nahi Socha from Tumse Acha Kaun Hai This energetic Mohammed Rafi features Babita aside Shammi Kapoor. As usual Shankar Jaikishen composed music and Hasrat Jaipuri penned lyrics. The movie also included beautiful duets like Rangat Teri Surat Si Kisi Me sung by Rafi and Lata, and also soft Rafi solo – Janam Janam Kaa Saath Hai. The movie title has been coined from one of the very popular songs of Shammi Kapoor from the movie Janwar.

20. Deewana Hua Badal from Kashmir Ki Kali The movie marked the Bollywood debut of  Sharmila Tagore, and since then her pairing with Shammi Kapoor has always been appreciated. The movie’s extremely popular music was composed by O.P. Nayyar, and the lyrics were penned by S.H. Bihari. The movie included many chartbuster and evergreen tracks sung by Rafi and Asha, particularly this one. The song was beautifully pictured in the lakes and boats of Kashmir.

21. Yeh Chand Sa Roshan from Kashmir Ki Kali Lovely pictured on a lake of Kashmir, Shammi too was in his full energy mood for this song. It’s a beautiful romantic track too with lovely lyrics describing the beauty of shy Kashmir girl, Sharmila Tagore. O. P. Nayyar has been associated with Shammi Kapoor in the 1950s for Tumsa Nahin Dekha before he became a big star and SJ got permanently added to Shammi movies. Yet O. P’s songs for Shammi Kapoor always remain memorable.

22. Subhanalla from Kashmir Ki Kali In 1960s, Shammi Kapoor mostly played a charming romantic hero onscreen and Shankar Jaikishen composed majority of his songs. Only in rare cases, he worked with other composers and succeeded as well. O. P. Nayyar for Kashmir Ki Kali and R. D. Burman for Teesri Manzil are best instances. When O. P. Nayyar made Shammi Kapoor to listen to some of his compositions, Shammi immediately said yes. The soundtrack included 8 songs, and all the songs became huge hits. This solo track featured Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore, and was filmed in a truck.

23. Yeh Duniya Use Ke from Kashmir Ki Kali While the rest of the songs were filled with fun, this one is an exception. This sad song featuring Shammi Kapoor was sung by Rafi. Also read: Soulful melodies of Shammi Kapoor sung by Rafi. Rafi’s Kahin Na Kahin Dil Lagana Padega was also equally popular.

24. Isharon Isharon from Kashmir Ki Kali – Kashmir Ki Kali is always regarded as one of the best works of O. P. Nayyar and it will always remain so. The movie is also known for some of the extremely popular solo tracks of Rafi as well as a few duets aside Asha Bhosle. The movie also included one more popular duet of Rafi and Asha – Meri Jaan Balle Balle.

25. Hai Na Bolo Bolo from Andaaz Andaaz is best remembered as the last hit of Shammi Kapoor in solo lead role, though Rajesh Khanna plays a cameo in the film. This beautiful duet sung by Rafi and Lata features two beautiful kids aside dream girl Hema Malini and Rockstar Shammi Kapoor. Shammi, who played a father in the film is seen in a matured avatar throughout, quite different from his flirting image for which he is known most. SJ used Rafi’s voice to record Shammi Kapoor songs while Kishore Kumar’s for ‘Zindagi Ek Safar’ filmed on Rajesh Khanna, the last recorded song before Jaikishen’s death in his early 40s. What an irony! Andaaz remains one among the best works of SJ during the last phase of career in Bollywood.

Hai Na Bolo from Anadaz - Suman's duet with Rafi

Dil Usse De Jo Jaan De is yet another duet sung by Rafi and Lata, a party song featuring the lead pair and children. Hasrat Jaipuri penned the lyrics of all its song. The movie also included a beautiful solo of Rafi filmed on Shammi Kapoor – Re Mama Re Mama Re, extremely loved by kids.

26. Mein Gaoon Tum So Jaao from Brahmachari – Brahmachari is perhaps the best film of Shammi Kapoor, based on his performance; the only movie which helped him to bag the prestigious Filmfare best actor award; a sweet revenge to those who don’t count Shammi among the great actors. Songs are timeless and Shankar Jaikishen earned Filmfare award for best music director. Shailendra also earned Filmfare award for best lyrics for this soft solo, while Rafi earned a nomination.

27. Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar from Brahmachari Shammi Kapoor is seen flirting Mumtaz in this song, and the song and the movie also brought her to limelight, who was mostly associated with B-grade stunt movies till then. In this very popular party song of 1960s, Pran is also seen romancing Mumtaz. It’s a rare duet of Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur. Hasrat Jaipuri penned its very popular lyrics. A rejected tune, the song was included in the album later on insistence by Kapoor.

28. Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein from Brahmachari This heart breaking song featuring Shammi Kapoor and Rajshree is my personal favourite song from the album. Shammi Ji is seen playing a piano while Rajshree is seen in tears. For the year 1969, Rafi earned all the three nominations at Filmfare award, with two nominations from Brahmachari and finally winning it for Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein. Lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri also earned a Filmfare nomination and is still popular.

29. Yun To Humne from Tumsa Nahi DekhaAn accomplished work of Nayyar in the 1950s, music played a major role to make this film a super hit. Ameeta appeared in this song aside Shammi Kapoor, who played lead role. Sahir Ludhianvi penned its lyrics and Mohammed Rafi did playback singing. Though the movie was a major hit, it couldn’t propel the career of its lead actress, Ameeta.

30. Dekho Kasam Se Kahate Hain Tum Se from Tumsa Nahin DekhaOne of the early associations of O. P. Nayyar and Asha Bhosle, who predicted then, the pair is to bring some of the best magical songs in the next One-and-a-half decade or so! Nayyar played a magnificent role in shaping Asha’s career who was only a struggling singer then. Nayyar identified the true potential of this great singer, and recorded many youthful songs in her voice, which younger generations still cherish. Rafi sang this duet with Asha, Majrooh Sultanpuri penned the lyrics and film’s lead pair was featured in this song. Sar Par Topi and Aaye Hain Door Se are two other popular duets sung by the duo for the movie, and Chhupnewale Samne Aa – a popular solo of Rafi.

31. Jawaniya Ye Mast Mast Bin Piye from Tumsa Nahin Dekha Needless to say, songs composed by Nayyar were super-duper hit once got released. Rafi solo featuring Shammi Kapoor, its lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

32. Na Rutho Rutho Na Rutho Meri Jaan from Jawa MohabbatShammi Kapoor owns only less number of hit songs in the 1970s, and this teasing number featuring Asha Parekh and Shammi worth mentioning. They remained a hit pair of 1960s. But when this movie got released, they had already passed their good old days. Voice was rendered by Rafi and Asha Bhosle, and lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri. One of the best works of SJ in the 1970s, only two songs from the album is worth mentioning. The second one is Jab Mohabbat Jawan Hoti Hai.

33. Tumne Kise Ki Jaan Ko from Rajkumar – Rajkumar is one among the finest works of Shankar – Jaikishen, the music duo who has always reserved something for their favourite star. Though its music was a huge hit and still loved by music fans, it couldn’t win any nominations at Filmfare awards. This soft solo of Rafi was filmed on Sadhana and Shammi Kapoor, and lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri.

raj kumar songs

34. Tumne Pukara Aur Hum Chale Aaye from RajkumarShankar – Jaikishen regularly worked with Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra, and in most projects they share work between the two lyricists. Same is the case of Rajkumar too. Hasrat Jaipuri penned the lyrics of this particular song, and Rafi & Suman Kalyanpur rendered their voices. The song featured the lead pair.

35. Is Rang Badalti Duniya Mein from Rajkumar Three solos of Rafi were recorded for the film, and all of them were instant hits including the title song. This particular song featuring Shammi Kapoor and Sadhana was penned by Hasrat Jaipuri. The movie also included all-time hit Lata song – Aaja Aayi Bahar, featuring the lead pair.

raj kumar songs

36. Meri Mohabbat from Janwar One of my personal favourites, this intense love song was filmed on Shammi Kapoor and Rajshree. Like many Shammi fans, I too got smitten by the looks and charisma of Shammi Ji in this song. Music was composed by Shankar-Jaikishen, and lyrics of this particular song penned by Shailendra.

37. Dekho Abto Kisiko Nahin Hai Khabar from JanwarThe song was set to the tune of the Beatles song “I Wanna Hold Your Hand“, and was immensely popular too. A dance number featuring Shammi Kapoor and Rajshree, Shailendra penned the lyrics. Mohammed Rafi & Asha Bhosle are the lead voices, with Balbir providing the back vocals.

38. Tumse Acha Kaun Hai from Janwar Shammi Ji is seen flirting Rajshree in this song filmed on some hill station of North India. Hasrat Jaipuri wrote its very popular lyrics. Lal Chadi is yet another flirting song featured on the lead pair, which narrowly missed this list.

shammi janwar

39. Tum Mujhe Yu from Pagla Kahin KaThe song had two solo versions, one in Rafi’s voice and second one in Lata’s voice, and both featured the lead pair, Shammi Kapoor & Asha Parekh. SJ composed the music and Hasrat wrote lyrics. Its title song sung by Rafi too was popular. The comedy song, Meri Bhains Ko Danda Kyo Maara also gained popularity for its uniqueness.

40. Dil Tera Diwana from Dil Tera DiwanaLata Mangeshkar-Mohammed Rafi  ‘rain’ duet was filmed on Mala Sinha and Shammi Kapoor and  the song was penned by Shailendra. The movie’s Mujhe Kitna Pyar Hai Tumse track was also sung by Lata and Rafi, and filmed on same pair, and it is a difficult task to choose one of these two. The movie also included two soft duets of both – Masoom Chehra Ye Qatil Adayen and Jane Wafa Jane Jahan.

41. Nazar Bachakar from Dil Tera Deewana – Dil Tera Deewana is remembered for some finest compositions of Shankar-Jaikishen. This beautiful Rafi solo featured Mala Sinha aside Kapoor. Hasrat Jaipuri penned the lyrics.

42. Baar Baar Dekho from China TownThis particular club song composed by Ravi was a chartbuster. The song featured Shakila side Shammi Kapoor. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote this song.

43. Title track from Dil Dekhe Dekho One of the early hits of Shammi Kapoor, the movie gave him a new image as a comedic, dancing hero. The movie is also known as the debut film of Asha Parekh as an adult actress, who went on to became a lead heroine in the 1960s. Usha Khanna marked her debut as music director through Dil Dekhe Dekho, and her work was well appreciated. But its compositions had an ‘O. P. Nayyar’ touch, who composed songs for Shammi’s Tumsa Nahi Dekha, one year prior to the release of Dil Dekhe Dekho. The movie featured 4 Rafi solos of which this title track was most popular. All the lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

44. Bade Hai Dil Ke Kaale from Dil Dekhe Dekho This fast track featuring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh worth mentioning in the list of Shammi Kapoor’s career best songs. Mohammed Rafi & Asha Bhosle sang this duet. The movie included two more duets of the same pair – Yaar Chulbhula Hai and Pyar Ki Kasam.

45. Hum Aur Tum Aur Yeh Sama from Dil Dekhe DekhoThis soft solo of Rafi is very beautiful. The song featured Asha Parekh aside Kapoor.

46. Pyar Ki Kasam from Dil Dekhe Dekho A duet of Rafi and Asha, the song featured Asha Parekh and Shammi Kapoor.

47. Yaar Chulbhula Hai from Dil Dekhe DekhoThe songs of the album of so lovely that I included 5 of the 7 tracks. In fact, the excluded song Megha re Megha is also beautiful, and played as intro to Yaar Chulbhula Hai in the film. The song sequences and film scenes are repeated in Nazir Hussain’s Pyar Ke Mausam too, where Asha Parekh played the female lead.

48. Govinda Aala Re from Bluffmaster The song surrounds around Janmashtami celebration and lovely filmed too. The song featuring Kapoor was sung by Rafi and penned by Rajinder Krishan. Songs were composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, indeed a rare combination. The song used to be a must play song in the streets of Mumbai those days, particularly during Krishna Jayanti celebrations. The movie included a rare gem – Aye Dil Ab Kahin sung by Hemant Kumar, and also Socha Tha Pyar Hum Na Karenge sung by Mukesh.

49. Dheere Chal Dheere Chal of Boyfriend One of the best ever songs of Shammi Kapoor, the song also featured the very beautiful Madhubala, on whom our actor had a crush once. She pretends to be asleep, but smiling beautifully, and the gentle breeze – so lovely. The song had later inspired one of the best sizzling tracks of Bollywood ever – “Kaatey Nahin Kat Tey, Yeh Din Yeh Raat” for the movie Mr. India featuring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. Also read: Top 30 songs of Sridevi. Music of Boyfriend was composed by Shankar Jaikishan, and lyrics written by Hasrat Jaipuri. The album also included popular songs such as Mujhe Apna Yar Banalo, Salam Aap Ki Meethi Nazar Ko Salam etc.

The tune of the Mukda was earlier used in 1959 Dev Anand film, Love Marriage. The tune was heard as background score in both the train sequences in which Dev Anand and Mala Sinha travel together. I believe, the background score of the film was also done by SJ, who composed the original track. Boy Friend  composed by SJ was released two years later.

50. Ya Allah Ya Allah Dil Le Gayi from Ujala Let me conclude the list with a duet sung by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar. The song composed by Shankar Jaikishan had Mala Sinha and Shammi Kapoor onscreen as love birds. Hasrat Jaipuri penned the lyrics of Jhoomta Masoom, Mast Mahina.

From the list of above songs, it’s pretty clear, majority of them are Rafi solos specially tuned for the hysteria of Shammi. If it’s the case of female singers, Asha Bhosle was mostly associated with Shammi films, comparing with Lata. In the 1960s when O. P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman composed Kashmir Ki Kali and Teesri Manzil for Shammi Kapoor, all the songs went to Asha Bhosle. SJ too preferred to experiment with the voices of Asha Bhosle, Sharda and Suman Kalyanpur when Rafi and Lata stopped singing together in the mid-1960s for many years. This could be the reason why we find only a few Lata songs associated with Shammi Kapoor films. Many a few don’t like his jerking head or mad like behavior onscreen. My father too, though loves his songs, doesn’t like his mannerisms and strange behaviour. Yet we can’t deny the fact that he remains one of the best entertainers of Bollywood screen – truly a rockstar. Very soon I shall add some of the best films of Shammi Kapoor.
