Shah Rukh – Kajol movies which stole our heart

Year 1993 – a time when Bollywood screen was fully dominated by numerous young actors struggling to put feet in the field of entertainment, a less-known hero with a couple of successful films in hand accepted a negative shaded hero role, enough to change the perception of Bollywood heroes till then. Though many established celebrities of Bollywood warned him saying this particular role could ruin his career, he didn’t put back his foot. He accepted the protagonist cum antagonist role of the movie Baazigar, which proved to the milestone movie of his career.

Though he played a negative role, through his outstanding performance he won millions of hearts and a new star was born! Not only that, it began the successful association of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who established as the most popular star pair of Bollywood, and over the years their popularity has only increased in geometric progression. Fans have always admired both these actors whenever they worked together for the movie, and no doubt, time has only made that bond stronger, and the Jodi still looks fresh. Their iconic film – DDLJ completed 1000 weeks and 19.5 years in Maratha Mandir theatre of Mumbai, becoming the longest running Indian film.

Till now Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have worked together in 6 movies – Baazigar (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum (2002), My Name is Khan (2010) and Dilwale (2015), and all the movies were commercially successful. In fact Baazigar, DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum became huge blockbusters also. It’s well acknowledged that the success of Baazigar, DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai established the careers of both the actors in Bollywood. Their recent release, Dilwale, which derived its title from their blockbuster DDLJ received negative response from critics and audience, though it was a box office hit. Yet box office collections were not up to the mark.

The couple have worked together in action movies like Baazigar and Karan Arjun, romantic movies like DDLJ and KKHH, and family dramas like K3G, proving themselves to be the best Jodi for every type of Bollywood masala movies. They set new formulas in Bollywood, especially in the romantic genre of movie making in Indian cinema. No doubt, audience of different age groups, belonging to different generations adore this screen couple very much. I now expect the couple to do some brilliant movie with a powerful script which leaves us spellbound. I would love to edit this column when they share screen space for their next movie in the distant future. Let me add, like many Bollywood fans, my favourite onscreen jodi is SRK-Kajol.
